Lanette is a homeless veteran living in her car in Inglewood. When she got out of the military, Lanette returned to Compton to reconnect with her family. The structure that Lanette learned in the military made it hard for her to adjust to civilian life.
Lanette has PTSD serving in two tours in Iraq. She was a hospital corpsman and believed that Marines couldn't die. Lanette says witnessing the death of Marines does something to a soldier's soul.
She started to smoke Spice to help deal with the PTSD, but eventually, her family asked her to leave because she was using the drug. Her only choice was to live in her car.
Lanette is full of life yet because of PTSD and a drug addiction, she is vulnerable out on the streets. The back window of her car was missing she says as a result of a gang shooting.
Somewhere along the way we failed Lanette. We must be able to provide veterans with the support they need before they end up living in a car or worse.
Angelenos can help end homelessness this March 7th. Vote YES on Measure H to help end homelessness for 45,000 families and individuals across Los Angeles County within the next five years. It will also prevent homelessness for 30,000 families and individuals over the same time period, including women and children, veterans, seniors, foster youth, and survivors of domestic violence. NEW UPDATE: I have talked with Lanette’s uncle who was able to connect me to her mother. After serving our country twice... Lanette is no longer living in her car. She is living in a home reconnected with her amazing family. Everyday she is doing better and better! She’s taking each day as it comes and doing incredibly well! Someone with such a kind heart and soul... Such a blessing to know that she’s okay.

Thank you for posting that follow up, I am a veteran as well and to see and hear about her not having a place to stay brought me to tears. To SourStrawberries. Military doesn't pay that well. And a lot of the poorer recruits send money to their struggling families, while the wealthier ones can invest, save, start businesses, etc. Also, in my opinion, it's a bit impolite to publicly criticize a complete stranger for not spending their money the way you would have. Finally, you should try living in your car for one month, so you could experience how expensive and dangerous it actually is. Then, unless you are a sociopath, your compassion would likely kick in.

Yeah I deffintely feel for her but she needs to tone her ego down a tad she has a dominant personality who I believe would be always be right .. everybody else is wrong type of person. She raves on about her military life & the extreme training that goes with it but she chose to use drug's & that's a weakness. Military training promotes strong minds in conjunction with the physical training so she's failed miserably there, and has children she's responsible for. I think she will find life after the military to instructed for her to manage now. I wish her the very best in her future hopefully she calms down her personality, people like her just go around in circles never accomplishing their goals.

Everybody deserve to be off the street or at least the ones that actually want to be better and to do better. Shes no different from anybody else, she really isnt. Most people who join the military arent looking to save America and you. A lot come from broken homes or tired of the same B.S so they join to get away. They dont give a fuck about you. I am just being real i was in the guard 10 years ago, i joined for clout/kiss ass and to get out of regular life and i wanted to go to war, it was an excitement i dreamed about it. Most of the people in Military relate just to that. Being in the military is the biggest ego boost in the world and everyone around you just keeps pumping it up. Nobody is serving shit but themselves, part of living that Military experience means going to war, whether you want to or not. There is no choice but to "serve" your country when you sign up! You 'Serve Your Country' in exchange for everything the Military provides for your self serving needs; Ego, Benefits, Status. They shouldnt be put first ahead of anyone. Everyone deserves a good life and vets have their own self serving interest, so dont kiss ass too much!

Snootches Bootches I have to say that you're right. I was in the Naval reserves for 7+ years and that was pretty much what I gathered with those who were regulars. I always told some of the men, 'Look, go better yourself with an education or a trade. That way when you get out you have something to fall back on." I have seen far too often those who were honorably discharged being a little lost in terms of direction. One gets caught up in the feel. They have their friends, military culture, oversea bar scenes, etc. Eventually, it all has to come to an end. Some of them who were married came back to empty homes, or very changed marriages. The only way I would do it over again would be as an officer or one of the better disciplines, such as electronics, computer technology, computer security, that can actually land you a job on the outside. Even a military pilot flying the big irons, or helos. Those jobs transfer better than fighter aircraft.

Problem is i think the military blocks them, or should i say doesnt help them getting medical marijuana. Ive seen many vets who were on opioids and were going to get kicked off of them or wanted medical canibus instead and the military and their insurance frauds said they dont support that. So basically they suppprt you if you do opioids and herioine like substances, but if you even think about getting "medical" marijuana than your a bad person cause weed is bad to them. However, you just dont say shit, get your opioids, buy weed off the street and stash both for when u need it and dont do it unless you have too... Problem with that is they drug test if you get opioids so yeah constant bullshit because of corporate greed really. They just cant have weed dealers making there heroine 💰....

I went to a job interview years ago and the employer made a comment to one of his employees stating that he has a crazy soldier sitting in his office. It's not fun to be categorized as crazy just b/c you have been to war. and in order for you to get housing and to even apply for most of these services, it takes years and you must have an address in order for them to mail this info to. what if you don't have that? I have been diagnosed with PTSD and it is a struggle every day to live a normal life after being a woman serving in a combat zone. Its not an easy road for us soldiers.

Thank God For Natural Hair! You're absolutely correct! The New York City Housing Authority refuses to rent apartments to veterans! Send a veteran to the Williamsburg Housing Projects for an apartment. They don't qualify because they are not ILLEGAL ALIENS! Another scam that the Department of Veterans Affairs has pulled on veterans is "YOUR RECORDS WERE LOST IN A FIRE AT OUR RECORD STORAGE FACILITY." You should see the SHIT the DVA pulls on the veterans in Puerto Rico! I had to represent a Vietnam War Veteran who was shot up during the war and suffering from Agent Orange. He was told that there is NO RECORD OF HIS SERVICE! My team and I gathered his IRS and SOCIAL SECURITY RECORDS. On appeal, we proved that the IRS was taken out Federal Income Tax from his pay. His employer was The Department of Defense (US Department of The Navy (USMC). From his Social Security records we were able to prove the he received pay from DoD and had various pay increases. By analyzing his pay increases we knew what they were for. 1. Overseas Pay 2. Hazardous Duty Pay 3. Combat Pay We even got our hands on the Medivac Records. What I am trying to tell all of you is that the VA doesn't help veterans. It's other veterans that help our fellow veterans. Now that politicians have contaminated the mentally of Veterans with this "STOLEN VALOR" demonization of Veterans. On the Mental Health Ward at the Veterans Hospital in San Juan Puerto Rico, there are many veterans that do not speak of their military service. They don't show DD-214s (which by the way they shouldn't because of their private information on it. You just don't show ANYONE your discharge papers! ) The situation with our veterans is so bad, by design of the government. We have PEER COUNSELORS to assist veterans. At one time people that worked for the VA were veterans. The level of care was good. Now we have people that aren't veterans and they act as if the money was coming out of their pockets! 18 veterans a day commit suicide! With the blessings of Secretary Meyers we created The Veterans Affairs Suicide Prevention and Intervention Services. We are all volunteers! The congress will not even acknowledge us. During Hurricane Maria many veterans were displaced. The hospital was overwhelmed. Clinics were destroyed or severely damaged and off line. We had Satellite Phones to stay in contact with Washington. They claimed that we were an obstacle. The government as a whole doesn't care about veterans. They actually want the American people to hate veterans. And guess what, their plan is working. Just reading the comments here shows just how much veterans are hated by not just The American people but by other veterans! I'm old, and I probably won't be around when people will realize that they have had a hand in the demise of America to the point that the old proverb of Nikita Khrushchev's prediction "...and the living shall envy the dead..." will become a staunch reality. People will become their own victims of Divide and Conquer!

whoo else i am living in my car :( 61 years old, survived breast cancer. SSDI refused to help me and when I became hysterical, the SS assistant district manager banned me from their office. I have 7-1/2 months until SS kicks in. Social Security is allowing many people who cannot work fall into the gutter. I lost my home of 20 years and all she said was, uh huh...I told her if i lost my car, I’d have to take my life as I could not live on street. Told them I’d live stream my suicide and blame SS office for pushing me over the edge...that was when they banned me, my threat to ruin SS office reputation was misconstrued or intentionally misread as a threat to the worker. I have a clean record and never had a psychologist say i was unstable (even had SSDI psychological exam 2 years ago and they said I was not eligible for SSDI based on mental disorder). System wants us gone.

Sounds easy until you need to park at night and get some sleep. Here’s a news flash: No one will permit you to park in their empty parking lot for overnight parking any longer than a few days tops. That means one must be constantly searching for a discreet place to park which will not ring a bell with the locals. When I researched this “living in your car” concept, those promoting it gave the impression Walmart was a sure thing - that is no longer the case. There are signs in front of every row and they are brand new. No Overnight Parking with a tow truck pictured pulling a car behind it. But first, they lock your tire up so you cannot get away. This is quite stressful a situation. I tried a 24-hour laundry mat and the lady working there went ballistic; you’d think she have some sympathy for a woman my age (61) but it was contempt, unadulterated, that she displayed, telling me about all the homeless people using the bathroom, like it was my fault they were pigs. I try to wash my clothes there but it makes no difference. There are some really hateful people in this world and they have taken it upon themselves to chase people living in their cars off the streets. It’s so sad. I left Calif and ended up in Florida - big mistake. Now , i spent all my money and have to figure out how to get out of here before I am fined and ticketed into losing my ability to drive my car. This world has become very hostile toward the unfortunate and unlucky.

Margaret Byrd I’m upset with this as well I often feel like if someone had the mind and means (Say Amazon) to put these people in small homes and small fuel efficient cars/ healthcare but most of all work and the business profit (Say Amazons) would give them a leg up to be in position to build a life. Also the women with children work by choice. Build the community somewhere and n the desert and a factory to watch or at out there as well (no access to city life/ drugs) but if you’re going out of your way to bring to the community you’re out.

I know you can do this. Please think of we female veterans first. There are so very few programs for female vets. Only 3 homeless shelters nationwide for female veterans. If only you knew how many nights we can't sleep for thoughts of how do I have tomorrow running through your brain. Then....your car breaks down and you can't afford to repair it...your on the streets....sleeping on the very streets you swore to defend. Ask me how I know.

Lanette give up on that spice, and any other drug you may use. I'm from Compton, and a former Navy man. If you can't get housing, you may want to look at a class B van. It will be more comfortable for you to live in. Some of them even sleep 4 people. I want to buy one for myself. Some of your relatives went to high school with me. Your uncle was only trying to school you on how things are in Compton now. My mother still owns her house in Compton my brother lives in it. I take care of my mother and live in San Diego. If the military taught you anything it taught you to be a fighter, and not to give up. Your kids are your most important thing right now, do everything you can what ever it takes to do right by them. Looking at what you accomplished in the past you can fight that fight for those kids, and teach other women how to do it. I listen to your talk you are not dumb, you are smart, so use your talents to get ahead. Fight on my young sister move forward.
