Empty Chairs is a beautiful, heartbreaking love song. I cannot listen to Don's song Crossroads without sobbing uncontrollably. Same for this song. I can only listen to "Vincent" when I am feeling particularly strong. Otherwise, the words just destroy me. Don captures Vincent Van Gogh's pain so eloquently that we feel it, too. The sensitivity and expressiveness that Don conveys in his songs are rare gifts, and we are very fortunate that he has shared them with us for many, many years. Thank you, Don.

Met Don after a Sydney concert back in the early eighties. I spoke to him for about 20 minutes while he signed autographs. He was, in real life, just as he is in his songs, a truly nice, humble and caring person. Who else could have penned such wonderful songs, which touch everyone's heart so profoundly? His song 'Empty Chairs' hit a real spot for me after a relationship ended. He sort of captured the feelings I was experiencing. He goes to those places that really hurt and sooths your pain.
@randilevson9547 Жыл бұрын
You echoed my thoughts exactly. The unbearable pain of lost love is something that Don understands completely. He takes our collective pain and turns it into poetry. I think one of Don's many gifts is his empathy, which can make us feel less alone as we experience grief. 'Empty Chairs' just destroys me. So do 'Vincent' and 'Crossroads.' You were so lucky to get to speak to Don for as long as you did.

When I see you on the street, I lose my concentration. Just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to know. Well I've been thinkin' about you day and night... And I don't know if it'll work out right... But somehow I think that it just might... if we try. Faces come and faces go in circular rotation. But something yearns within to grow beyond infatuation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to know. Well you've got me standin' deaf and blind... Cause I see love as just a state of mind... And who knows what it is that we might find... if we try. You're walking a different direction from most people I've met. You're givin' me signs of affection I don't usually get. I don't want you to pledge your future the future's not yours to give. Just stand there a little longer and let Me watch while you live. 'Cause when I see you on the street, I lose my concentration. And just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to Know. Well I've been thinking about you day and night... And I don't know if it will work out right... Empty Chairs Lyrics (below). Every word is perfectly chosen in this beautiful poem. It's so rare and I hate to say that they don't make lyrics like this anymore. Well done Don McLean. I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright Beams of blue come flickering through my window pane Like gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face While chestnut hair fell all around the pillow case And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head A sympathy bouquet left with the love that's dead And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Never thought the words you said were true Never thought you said just what you meant Never knew how much I needed you Never thought you'd leave, until you went Morning comes and morning goes with no regret And evening brings the memories I can't forget Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would

He just needs a guirar. The rest is his inspiration and talent. Someone I loved very much ibtroduced me to this exceptional artist. When he was born the muses were watching over him. He is timeless. In a few chosen words he can make us experience a lifetime of emotions. You've got it all, Don.

Although I have only listened to his "American Pie" album I can without a doubt say that this is some of the most beautiful music I have heard that was created in the last 300 years.

I sponsored Don at my high school in 1979 or so. His Homeless Brother sung with Pete Seeger is a masterpiece.
