Empty Chairs is a beautiful, heartbreaking love song. I cannot listen to Don's song Crossroads without sobbing uncontrollably. Same for this song. I can only listen to "Vincent" when I am feeling particularly strong. Otherwise, the words just destroy me. Don captures Vincent Van Gogh's pain so eloquently that we feel it, too. The sensitivity and expressiveness that Don conveys in his songs are rare gifts, and we are very fortunate that he has shared them with us for many, many years. Thank you, Don.

I learned this song when the love of my life courted me. He usually sang this song while he was brushing my hair w/ his fingers. Yes, we did try to be in a relationship status. Now, we are married w/ a happy little girl as a fruit of our if-we-try relationship. Thank God, we deserve each other. ❤❤❤ I was his last love & he was my first 🥰

I 've seen Don Mclean live more than other artist and I 've seen a lot of artists but for me there is no one greater. To walk on stage with just an acoustic guitar, banjo and his voice and entertain tens of thousands of people is truly magnificent, a great singer, a great musician and great composer.................he really has everything. As my time comes to an end I look bacck with admiration of this man.

Met Don after a Sydney concert back in the early eighties. I spoke to him for about 20 minutes while he signed autographs. He was, in real life, just as he is in his songs, a truly nice, humble and caring person. Who else could have penned such wonderful songs, which touch everyone's heart so profoundly? His song 'Empty Chairs' hit a real spot for me after a relationship ended. He sort of captured the feelings I was experiencing. He goes to those places that really hurt and sooths your pain.
@randilevson9547
@randilevson9547 Жыл бұрын
You echoed my thoughts exactly. The unbearable pain of lost love is something that Don understands completely. He takes our collective pain and turns it into poetry. I think one of Don's many gifts is his empathy, which can make us feel less alone as we experience grief. 'Empty Chairs' just destroys me. So do 'Vincent' and 'Crossroads.' You were so lucky to get to speak to Don for as long as you did.

Don Mclean was one of a kind - a giant of creative energy and an amazing poet and songwriter. Not to mention he had a great voice and was a superb guitar player. Basically he was the whole package. He really did not need a backup band. Notice how he fills up the auditorium just by himself.

I love his live performances. His studio recordings are wonderful, but they can't beat hearing and watching him perform live, then and now. And even though I normally don't like it when singers change the way they sing their muchloved songs at concerts, I don't mind it so much when Don does it like in this video. His songs are so beautiful that no matter how he sings them they stay beautiful. And his guitar playing is truly excellent.

Every crisp leaf that falls, all the flowers that grow; on this colourful tapestry .somehow they know.. When I see you on the street, I lose my concentration. Just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to know. Well I've been thinkin' about you day and night... And I don't know if it'll work out right... But somehow I think that it just might... if we try. Faces come and faces go in circular rotation. But something yearns within to grow beyond infatuation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to know. Well you've got me standin' deaf and blind... Cause I see love as just a state of mind... And who knows what it is that we might find... if we try. You're walking a different direction from most people I've met. You're givin' me signs of affection I don't usually get. I don't want you to pledge your future the future's not yours to give. Just stand there a little longer and let Me watch while you live. 'Cause when I see you on the street, I lose my concentration. And just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation. Won't you look my way once before you go And my eyes will say what you ought to Know. Well I've been thinking about you day and night... And I don't know if it will work out right... But somehow I think that it just might... if we try. Somehow I think that it just might if we try. Yes somehow I think that it just might if we try. Source: Musixmatch

Can't agree more. I met him outback of the Sydney Entertainment Centre after a concert and he was such a nice, quietly spoken, humble guy. We spoke for about 20 minutes and he was so nice. His lyrics and beautiful music touch your heart. That's why after seeing him perform, Roberta Flack wrote "Killing me softly with his song". I shed many a tear over 'Empty Chairs' after a relationship ended, I even learned how to play it on the guitar. He, James Taylor and John Denver are my big three.

Empty chairs is the most beautiful song about his mother his REAL mother our little Mary(quite contrary) and although I've been listening to it for 40 years I never tire of it. The guitar is a Martin 000-28 made in 1929. The 000-28VS is a modern recreation of this stunning and valuable vintage instrument. He still has it but doesnt play it now.

Empty Chairs Lyrics (below). Every word is perfectly chosen in this beautiful poem. It's so rare and I hate to say that they don't make lyrics like this anymore. Well done Don McLean. I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright Beams of blue come flickering through my window pane Like gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face While chestnut hair fell all around the pillow case And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head A sympathy bouquet left with the love that's dead And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Never thought the words you said were true Never thought you said just what you meant Never knew how much I needed you Never thought you'd leave, until you went Morning comes and morning goes with no regret And evening brings the memories I can't forget Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would

Maybe the loveliest song you ever penned and sang .. the 1st one. So glad to hear it here in 2020. I grew up to a lot of your music in my youngest days.

The purpose of life, "recognise your gift, and give." How many can say they ever did? Most of us are fooled by the narrative of getting what we can from life. Don must have been truly happy.

Empty Chairs was new at the time I was feeling my marriage was failing after only 3 years. It made me stop and think about leaving and put a little more effort into making it work. We had a wonderful life until my husband got cancer and lost him after 36 years together. There's a chair, but it's not empty because it holds so many memories of our life together.

Superb! I saw 6 concerts on the 75 UK tour including four nights in a row, Sheffield, Manchester, Croydon and the RAH. A superb performer I learned a lot from . A different set every night except for Bronco Bill's Lament as the opener and American Pie/ Vincent as the finishers prior to the numerous encores. In Manchester he played a long set of banjo songs and tunes but only Babylon the next night in Croydon. Every show was mesmerising.

Amazing touching songs, I'm glad he still performing and looks great. He always has a glass of orange juice!! I guess he never had a alcohol drink or.... ! not like those late and today's singers, they all die early from something.....

I sang "If we try" onstage when i was a high school freshman way back 1973 as it was then a hit. It was a last minute choice and luckily a girl classmate played the guitar as i didnt know how then. I guess i nailed it as i got a big applause. Ill never forget it.

He just needs a guirar. The rest is his inspiration and talent. Someone I loved very much ibtroduced me to this exceptional artist. When he was born the muses were watching over him. He is timeless. In a few chosen words he can make us experience a lifetime of emotions. You've got it all, Don.
