I did buy a Homelite trimmer 22 years ago. But, it was branded and sold as a John Deere. But, it DEFINITELY a Homelite in all but cosmetic respects. I had just bought my first home and couldn't afford a Stihl or Echo that I really wanted. I figured this one last me a good 5 years or so, at least, and then I could afford to go buy a nice one. Well, here I am 22 years later, and that damn thing still runs as good as new. I've definitely got my $189 out of it! It just keeps defying my excuse to go buy a new one!

Let me put it this way. I have a cheapy Homelite trimmer that I bought back in 2003. I'm still currently using it, and it has been an absolute CHAMP. Like seriously. I just recently had to give it some attention/maintenance. It was acting weird as far as starting, running, idling, so I decided to buy an inexpensive aftermarket carb. I replaced it, and it's running like new again. Since I replaced the carb, I replaced the fuel lines, too. The original fuel lines were black rubber, and had no cracks, and were still soft and pliable. Crazy to me. So would I buy a Homelite for home use? ABSOLUTELY. I've shared these details with the host of this channel before, but I wanted to share with his viewers, too. My only concern with Homelite is wondering if the current ones are still as good as the older ones, or if they have gone downhill. Just cause they used to be good back then, doesn't mean that they are still good. But my old Homelite has been VERY GOOD to me. Could not ask for more.

Add me to the list of happy Homelite owners. I bought mine in 1995, and other than replacing the fuel lines, the primer bulb, a broken trigger (my fault) , and the spool retainer, it has ran fine until the other day. The original foam filter finally disintegrated and the engine sucked in about half of it, choking out the engine. I removed the debris and it fired right back up. I doubt the new models have this longevity. I'm also running it on 40:1 mix, not their 32:1 recommendation. Thumbs up to Homelite.

Homelites are great if you've never used anything else before. The one I used since 2011 was great until I decided it was time to replace it this year and bought a used Echo SRM-210. The Echo is better in every way including weight. I don't think I'll ever be going back, but I'll at least keep the Homelite around for a backup trimmer.

Always drain the petrol tank then run the engine until it runs dry. Because I’ve always done this I’ve never had starting problems with any of my Homelite, Poulan’s and my Weed eaters. As for Homelite machines I’ve had them for years and always found the engines to be reliable and dependable. However I’ve replaced the entire flexible shafts on my machine with steel shafts from a commercial machine that had worn out. Simply because I really enjoy repairing machines and improving them if possible, (Subscribed)

No problemo owning a Homelite trimmer. I've had a HLT series straight shaft for about 6 years with only the bump head needing replacement. They tend to wear down with the bumping, maybe I smack it a little too hard. It's on its 3rd head now and I think that when this bump head is no longer serviceable, for environmental reasons I will get a Honda 4 stroke trimmer. I always run 40:1 petrol/oil mix in the Homelite. Plug gap of .025" (0.6mm) and run it slightly richer (mine has the H and L adjustment screws on the carb) than it came from the factory. I service it at the end of the season and store it between seasons with an empty fuel tank. I only use the primer bulb if the bulb is empty of fuel and start it with the choke if the motor is cold only, otherwise they tend to flood quite easily and they are a pig to start if they flood (but then what 2 stroke isn't???). They are cheap to buy, well built and reliable if simple maintenance is performed regularly so unless you have a real need to spend big bucks on a trimmer, the little Homelite performs adequately well.

Well,I would say that depends on how much grass you have to trim...I mean if I have a very small lawn it doesn't make sense to buy an Echo or Sthil or any higher end brand for way more money. Weedeater or homelite will get the job done just the same. However, if your a commercial landscaper and your trimmer is used all day then of course you'll go to the high end brands. Love your vids,very informative.

Yes I would buy a homelite trimmer if I was using it for light duty once or twice a week. I actually gave my son a homelite so we could mow together. Runs good. I run equipment pretty hard for long hours for heavy duty jobs including trimming for the farm. I personally have two professional series stihl trimmers/ brushcutters. I have a stihl FS-250R for the heavy brush, a KM-94R as a multi tool and a husqvarna 525L as a daily lawn care tool. But I'm perfectly happy running a homelite or other home owner grade machines around the house as long as they start fast and have good power in them.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE your welcome. Homelite is a good machine especially if you break in the engine correctly/gently through the first year of service. At least this is my way of doing it. The piston, piston rings, cylinder and bearings wear in very smoothly instead of being ran wide open and getting scored up, gouged and burnt to a crisp. I can afford a new spark plug and propane torch to burn the carbon out of the muffler rather than frying a new and perfectly good engine. After the break in period I gradually raise the throttle to about three quarters the second year.

While I don't necessarily have the problem your video covers, I was wondering about a pull cord issue I'm experiencing with a Homelite Model UT 33600 weedeater. The model in this post looks similar. The cord retracts but will not pull out smoothly. I've seen pull cord replacement videos for all but the UT 33600. It has a much different configuration then other models and I don't see anything related to pull cord replacement. The cord does not reside in the plastic housing cover but sits on top of the flywheel & clutch assembly. It almost appears as if the company has made it more complicated for the DIY community purposely. I'm here because your postings are clear and easy to follow. Maybe you can add something I'm missing. Appreciate any feedback.

Excellent video, quick question regarding this exact trimmer. If the primer bulb primes fuel perfectly, clean & clear screens in carb, but will only fire up when pouring a splash in the air intake as a self prime, what would you suggest the problem could be? poorly adjusted L & H carb jets?
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Жыл бұрын
yes, a carb that needs to be adjusted, to deliver more fuel to the engine would be my first thought. But to be honest, I wouldn't waste your time opening the carb. Instead buy an aftermarket Carb, and replace it.

Thanks for such a detailed video! I had a quick question. My craftsman/Troy-built weed eater starts fine and runs fine for about 30 mins or so. When I shut it off to refuel or change the attachment it won’t start again… after letting it cool down for 5-10 minutes it will start but only run for maybe 30 seconds. Any thoughts on how I should troubleshoot? It’s a 4-stroke btw.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

yes since it's a 4 stroke, have you ever checked the valve lash? IF it's out of tolerance, it could cause the problem you mentioned.

Hey thumbs up for the videos, discovered them recently after i had a few issues with my brushcutter. Great content! I have a question, what are your thoughts for storing brushcutters inbeetween use (for me its 3-4 weeks), just pouring gas mix out of the tank or do you recomend running idle to burn any gas left in carb? And before winter after empyting all the gas out, should i put a few drops of oil in carb throat and pull the string few times? Ive seen somewhere on the net but its not mentioned in Stihl manual for my trimmer. Thanks, and keep up the awesome videos! :)
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching i appreciate it. Do both to the brush cutter. After using it pour the gas out of the tank and restart it and let it run dry. As for the oil you can put some ATF in the spare plug hole and pull it over a few times.

HOMELITE really needs to change their name. YEARS AGO, when I saw the first HOMELITE tool, The name alone made me disregard it & buy another brand. What I interpreted from the name was HOME-a DIY tool for homeowners LITE- light duty. I other words a cheap POS. I have held this opine for 50 years. Imagine my surprise when recently I stumbled across the history of HOMELITE & it turns out, HOMELITEs first product was a chainsaw designed for farmers on the HOME farm. It was the lightest chainsaw of its size back in those days so the LITE weight was the big selling point. No one seemed to interpret the HOMELITE name as I did and they sold lots & lots of chainsaws, In fact, it turns out my RYOBE RY3716 is in fact a HOMELITE HCS3740. I have learned that HOMELITE builds some pretty good stuff. But, a new name might help but after all these years they wont want to throw away all that brand recognition. !

Is it true a clogged gas cap can cause lack of vacuum and no start? If so, do you have any recommendations on cleaning the cap on these? (I've already replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter along with cleaning the carb)
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
it won't cause lack of vacuum, it causing the fuel to not leave, as air can't vent into the tank. No its better to replace the cap.
@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 2 жыл бұрын
The cap has a vent valve in it. Its made of neoprene and cant be serviced. But your trimmer should start with a bad cap. Only after running a bit will it stall because it can no longer pull gas from the tank due to a vacuum created.

yes, once you adjust the carb to run right let it cool down and try starting it. sometimes the settings to get it to run right are not the same for a good cold start. keep adjsuint it for a good cold start and see how far it is off for running.
