FULL ARTICLE AND SKETCH: www.thesmallwor...
I made this jeweler's saw because for many projects I needed to cut steel in complex shapes and had no way to do it except outsourcing it to a CNC.
This saw can cut used table saw blades, my material of choice when making knives and other small tools. Which is more than enough for me. The fact that it does it quietly and that it's such a small simple tool is a bonus in my tiny home workshop.

One of the great joys of life is making things. It is a shame that the basic skill are no longer taught in most schools.
@TheSmallWorkshop
@TheSmallWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
Well, hand making things is pretty useless in the modern society, that's why they ditched it in schools. Take this saw for example, you could probably buy a better one for like ten bucks. And it took me a few hours every evening for almost a week to make it. So economically it makes no sense to make things ourselves. Like you said, it's just joy.

A fine quality job. I bought an antique one for my shed from a seller that specialises in antique tools. Cost me the same as a new one from China but much better quality.
@TheSmallWorkshop
@TheSmallWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
That's the best case scenario, old tools are awesome and the fact that you just paid a China price for it is a great deal. I try to do that whenever possible, watching local craiglist and flea markets, but never saw an old jeweler's saw available, just new ones and those only of the low end kind.

little tip for tensioning the blade. its much easier to leave the spine tight and then place the top part of the saw (w/o the handle) against the edge of your bench and push with your stomach against the handle. you can then get the blade tighter with a lot more consistency than by hand.
@TheSmallWorkshop
@TheSmallWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I've seen some youtube jewelers doing it, but my frame is a bit too rigid for that kind of tensioning.

Beautiful tool you’ve made. I love the details of the adjustability, and I really like your solutions. I have only ever found that adjustable height to be a liability tho, and prefer a fixed saw. They make them adjustable to be able to use broken blades, but blades are inexpensive, and by the time they break I’m not sure there teeth’s are still all in. I’ve also had saws that use a round bore to capture the blades, but always was frustrated with smaller blades slipping. But that could well be operator error. Never heard anybody else complain about that. Regardless my particularities around a saw, you’ve made a dandy one.
