Homeowner asked for a Quote but got a Free Yard Transformation Instead!

This homeowner asked me for an estimate to clean up her overgrown yard and I offered to do it for free! This busy working couple with 5 children moved into this place a while ago and have been struggling with the yard upkeep. One reason is just not having enough time to get it done, another is not having a regular maintenance schedule and the last would be the steepness of the property, which always makes it more difficult. Luckily, I came along and initially said I would do the job for tip fees, but then changed my mind and said I would do it for nothing. Hopefully, my loyal youtube viewers will appreciate this as much as the owners did. All up, I spent around 12 hours on this job, with 2 trips to the landfill.

Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: What happened to Nick?
A: Nick was offered a full-time position at his other job as a Political admin.
Q: What happened to Brent?
A: Brent quit at the start of August 2022.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why are you cutting so close to your employee!
A: I'm not cutting too close to my workers, they are standing too close to where I am working. All of my workers have been told numerous times about standing too close to the tools and about the hazards involved.
Q: Why do your workers do all the lifting and carrying?
A: Basically, they are employed to carry things and I pay them well, to do the job required.
Q: You work so well together, how do you do it?
A: That's the magic of editing. My workers are basically given instructions on what to do, I just edit it all out, so the videos look seamless!
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What happened to your workers?
A: Because the work is so hard and I expect high standards, most have quit over time. The only exception so far is Nick.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem the same.

Suggestion for you George: take us along with you to a landfill. Some of my favorite content creators do that. One guy owns a automobile wrecking yard in Kansas (Adventures Made from Scratch), and he takes us to estate auctions where they're selling off batches of cars and pickups that the decedent had collected. He also takes us to farms for vehicle cleanouts where he's either bought vehicles or has been hired to take away vehicles, equipment, and cleanup the trash. He's even taken his viewers on mushroom hunting expeditions, or outings with the kids. We also get to go along with him when he loads metal on his trailers and takes it to the local recycler. Farmers take viewers with them to the local co-ops to unload grain; to the auction to sell cattle; to other parts of the farm to repair buildings, and so on. So not just hopping in the combine and harvesting, but really all facets of their lives. One young farmer in Iowa (Cole the Cornstar) has even taken viewers on ski vacations. One builder I follow in New Zealand (Scott Brown Carpentry) takes viewers around for smocko time to different places to get sandwiches. We've been with him to the local suppliers around Auckland and Nelson to material suppliers. We've seen his tool supplier show up and demonstrate new tools. Heck, even the German landscapers (Kustorez) sat down for a quick beer in the midst of a really heavy yard overhaul. Kurtis and Karen from Cutting Edge Engineering in Oz have shots of their dog (Homie) and them feeding the Butcher birds to the point the birds are almost tame. Which seems like a not-so-good idea. You know, add variety; change things up a bit; make things a little more personal.

If these folks could get a local artist to sculpt that big stump, it would make an interesting feature in the back garden. Just wanted to say that I appreciate all the plant info you give (their species, whether they’re invasive, overgrown, etc.) and the reassurance that you have the owners’ or the neighbours’ permission to remove stuff. Hi George, I was just about ready to go to bed when I saw the new video was up and had to stay up to watch. So glad I did, WOW, this one went straight on my favorite Quick Cuts list. I enjoy the way you explain what each plant is and what you are doing to them. Checking with the neighbor about the bougainvillea shows respect for them and fosters good connections for the new homeowners. Great transformation!
