Your issue with the height of the top board being too tall was because the system is designed that you do not need a spacer below your first board. It is built in to the columns so that it keeps the bottom board elevated already. But overall, good looking system and easy install!!

I used this system last year building my first fence and I loved it! Can attest that it survived the winter in good shape too. I think it's worth every extra penny to save time and get consistent results especially if you don't have advanced skills.

33:14 - For my aesthetic preference: If doubling up some boards, I would have done the doubled up boards with no spacer near the bottom then a spacer between every board near the top. I’d prefer the aesthetic of having the extra thickness near the bottom and a “lighter” look at the top. Even better would have been to rip the bottom board lengthwise so that then it was a space between every board with only the bottom board being narrower. Either way, those are aesthetic preferences.

I like the way it was done. Gap on the bottom for us who deal with snow. Air flow more on the lower area and double boards to kind of cover the faces more of the people standing on the deck for noise reduction and privacy. I like it. You are good at this.

amazing work like always. In this situation, I would measure and ripe the board so it lines up, and place that ripped board at the bottom, so everything would line up at the top. But what you did works fine. Nice job.

I think the gap is preference based on how much wind exposure you get and how much privacy is warranted. Me, I'd go spacer, 2 boards, spacer, 2 boards to make it work out in your favor.

Solution for your hight issue: Remove the top board. Measure the left over space. A) Just cut the left over piece to this dimension and use it as "extraordinary piece" B) if you dont want ot to be asymmetrical, cut two pieces that total with spacer equal to the gap size. Put one of the extraordinary piece to the bottom and the other to the top. You may even paint black to give a frame-ish look 😊

I think I would have ripped the top board to the right height for the cap, then take it apart and use it as the bottom starter board. Rip all of the bottom boards the same. Then you’ll have even spaces on all boards.

I think double at the bottom and single at top would look better. gives a more large on bottom to small on top aesthetic that most buildings go with. Such as roofs being pointed, top finish pieces going big to small ect. When on the deck, will probably be sitting most of the time relaxing. more privacy coverage this way too. Either way it came out pretty nice and way too easy lol. Good job on finished product.

for me, I really like privacy so I would have left out the spacers and went all the way to the top (board on board)..even if i had to rip one and put it at the bottom or top so it isnt as noticeable..

About the posts and staining, good video by the way. But since this is all new construction, wouldn’t it be easier/better to just stain everything first and then put up the posts and build the wall?

Personally I would have kept single boards all the way to the top and just cut the final board abit slimmer. That, or do double boards at the bottom, then single in the middle and double on top.

Someone mentioned no need for spacers on the bottom. Do a dry run, lay the boards on the ground with spacers and measure the height, adjust as needed.

Regarding the spacing, I would have figured out how much space you needed to make up and add a few extra spacers at the beginning. This will increase space at the bottom that also allows some room to shovel snow through in winter.

I like that fence system. Looks very nice. If I counted correctly you have 3 double stacks and 6 single stacks per section. I would have gone 3 singles on bottom, 3 double stack in the middle, and 3 singles on the top for better privacy. From the angle of the neighbor's yard, they'll be seeing only ankles and tops of heads. Just my opinion.

My OCD says to put the double boards on the bottom, and then have the evenly spaced ones on the top. Just a balance thing...the appearance that the bottom is heavier than the top.

That all depends on if you have a thick enough frame under the bords do all 5 screws are in the frame and not in the deck boards. Cheers. Been 8 months now and more than 1 party. So far so good

For me personally, I'd have probably ripped down the top bord just a hair and used a router to throw the 1/8in roundover from the factory just for the consistent gap, but that's just my opinion!

i got this exact product around my land and your board will sink in those spacer a bit more than what you put them. With all the spacers and board dry i have about 1" from the last board to the very top of the cap. Youll see what i mean when you feel like your board are not lining up to the next. Its a good product and system but has flaws. Overall looks better than a normal fence but the price is higher at 150$ a post.

Now thats a smart system. Fast and neat and the spacers with a nail on it keeping it together. Looks great. And about the remembering of measurements........i know 😉 Write it down! The next day you see youre measurment ont the wood and then you think........what side was it?

great job Jeff.. Although the way you did the top.. id' have changed.. you put 3 singles on bottom and 3 doubles on top. looks nice. but I THINK.. I would have gone with double on bottom , on top and in the middle i'd have done a double.. the rest inbetween i'd have done the singles.. ( IF it works ).. ok, because i'm cheap.. TELL me.. wouldn't it be cheaper to have bought 2x4's and used a router to cut a 5/8" hole down the middle to slide the boards into?? cuz that's what i'm thinking of doing? cheaper than buying the metal 2x4's.. I guess I could paint them powder black when done? JUST A THOUGHT?

This is my next project, but on top of concrete for a much longer distance. How did your boards settle after time on 5ft centers for posts? Did they warp or bow out of alignment. I'm going with 6ft centers on posts and was wondering if I need a vertical board in the middle to keep the boards from warping or bowing. I wish I could go 8ft on centers but the product insists on 6ft.

I think I woulda ripped the excess off one, board and put it at the bottom. From 5’ish off the ground I think it would be barely noticeable, if at all. But I also live out in the middle of the woods, so I don’t worry about privacy…..cell signal is an issue, but privacy is not! 😂😂

On the ends that are not attached to the wall or a corner what keeps them sturdy. i live in a higher wind area with a lot of snow fall and want to keep as much integrity as possible. also curious if you have a suggestion on how to add a gate or opening.

I think the spacers are 1/2in, and you put a spacer at the bottom but didn't need to. If you had removed that spacer, the original pattern probably would have worked (you said following that pattern left you with 1/2in above).

Knowing that you had to double stack some, I think i would've been better to double stack then single stack on that privacy fence, in order to gain some "consistency" as you said. looks like you might have been able to double stack once at the bottom, once at the top, and once in the middle, providing a single stripe around the middle. 2 cents from someone who's opinion doesn't matter. Great video!

I used the Home Depot version that I screwed the channels into a wooden post then added the deck boards. I was amazed at just how much those boards shrank. Did the gaps get even larger on these?

that is why you apply the stain. it seals the wood and helps prevent shrinkage. also good to let the wood dry out before install.
