It makes me sad that there are people who would criticize you for buying some products instead of making your own. It makes me even sadder that you feel you have to explain yourself. What you do for your family is incredible and should only be applauded and admired. Please ignore anything negative. You are an amazing woman, mother, and wife. Don't let anyone tell you anything different.

I cannot fathom that anyone would have the audacity to criticise a single decision your family makes!! You are an absolute inspiration for all of your physical hardwork, your administrive hardwork, your emotional hardwork that you do day in & day out. And you are generous & gracious enough to share that with all of us. You share practical & encouraging help to so many of us enough to get a weekly glimpse into your life. And I appreciate you so much ❤ I live in Queensland within a subtropical climate of Australia & we are heading into our non existant spring season & are prone to cyclones/storms/bushfires so our garden is very different to yours but your tips are nonetheless so helpful. Buy whatever you & your family want, you earn every dollar ❤ Thankyou Jessica for the joy being in this online community brings me 🌻💗✝️🇦🇺

Here is a joke my husband subjects me to quite often: A young couple got married, and the wife, wanting to impress her new husband, went out of her way to make an elaborate dinner. She worked for hours. At the end he tasted what she made and he said, "You know honey this is good. But it's not like Mama made." Feeling rebuffed, she determined that she would study fine cuisine and provide him with the best food he ever tasted. Years went by, and she tried time after time to cook the most amazing meals for him, but every time, all he said was, "This is good honey, but it's not like Mama made." About 20 years into the marriage, and the wife was getting very frustrated. For their 20th anniversary, she thought to herself, "This year I'm going to really knock his socks off!" She worked for hours! Sourced exotic and expensive ingredients, mastered new professional techniques. She was in the middle of creating the most delicious dessert on her menu, when the phone rang. There was an emergency with one of her sons and she had to run out of the house to help him. She forgot to turn off the oven. When she returned, her roast was burnt to a crisp. The vegetables were soggy. The appetizer was stiff as a board. And the dessert was a runny mess. But she had no time. She had to serve the inedible meal as it was to her husband who'd returned from work. After he ate it, her husband pushed himself from the table, wiped his and said, "Finally honey! A meal just like Mama made!"

My mom used yo have what I called a grocery store in our basement. People would come over and comment about how much food was down there. Now that I'm an adult, I realize that she basically had a month or two of food for our family of 12. Plus, she always gave some to the church elders as well.

That’s what people call my pantry too. I am only feeding 5 adults, but I like having at least 1 year of foods in stock. It helped us a lot when my husband lost his job and it took over a year before he got another one. During that time, we pretty much only ate from the pantry. It also helps that we can grow food all year round. As for favorite freeze dried foods, I will say cabbage, shredded squash and shredded beets. The first is impossible to keep fresh here and you can’t really can them. We eat a lot of cabbages, so I am very happy to be able to freeze dry what we don’t ferment.

I believe it was Simply Living Alaska, when they bought their cabin in the woods, they found that there was food in the cabin. I wanna say they found freeze dried meals from that company that did your green beans, and the meals were from the 70's? Eric and Arielle went through them and ate them, said they were actually pretty good compared to some of what is on the market today, they were better in many cases. Great tour, Jessica! :) Was lovely to spend some time with you today! Have a wonderful week!

My dad was a boy scout leader; and when they did their camping trips, they made what they called German pizza. It's a base of fried potatoes, (I use frozen square cut hash browns, salt and papper them as frying. Then layer in strips of fried spam, followed by a bunch of eggs, scrambled up be pouring over the potato/spam mixture. Sprinkle cheese, if no dairy allergies, or use dairy free cheese, over top and put in oven until eggs are set well and potatoes crisp. It became a family favorite growing up, with my 8 brothers and sisters. It's a delicious breakfast for dinner meal.

The fact that you grow and preserve as much of your own food as you do and still have to justify store-bought purchases is just crazy to me. It's nearly impossible to produce all of a family's needs on your own, and like you said, part of a good marriage is compromise. If people can't see that, that's on them! I, too, grow and preserve a ton of my family's food, but Aldi organic ketchup can't be beat. I will never waste my time or resources making ketchup as long as I can get it from Aldi! Not to mention the handful of other things that we just like, can't recreate ourselves, or just plain don't want to give up.

I will never, ever, ever spend my time canning ketchup again. It was a very unenjoyable experience. Right now in this season of life I work one day a week at our business that has almost 40 employees in three locations in two different cities and four days a week remotely. I also homeschool our five children as my husband is off running our business 12 - 15 hours a day during the week. I buy everything I can that meets our standards, and some even that doesn't in moderation. 10 years ago I made almost everything from scratch. We all do the best we can in the season we are in at the time 😊

@@threerivershomestead We love ketchup, and I still can one batch per year in half pint jars. The reason is that I have a really great sweet/sour recipe that uses ketchup, and I like to dump a jar of the home canned in. I also sweeten that sauce with stevia instead of sugar, and it keeps in the fridge for a good amount of time too. So, we eat ketchup from the bottle, and I cook the sauce with my canned stuff! For us it's win win.

Yet he hates the flavor of kale, and prefers cabbage fresh, or steamed. But yet this weekend on a trip away I arranged for us to have dinner at a Culver's. He got to have his fix of burgers, fries, and root beer. 😊 Happy hubby. Then he was just as happy coming home to my canned chicken vegetable soup, and a mug of chamomile tea.

You mentioned gluten intolerance. About the time that became such a common problem, Monsanto convinced farmers to spray Roundup/Glyphosate on grains and beans to speed up the harvest. They spray it on the plants about a week before the harvest. It kills the plant and the seeds begin to dry in the field. Glyphosfate may be the real problem for many. An illegal thing to do in many countries. I'm new to your channel and am impressed. As for length so far, your content makes it worth the time. By contents, I don't mean look at all my jars. It's how to do it and why it works. It is also apparent that you have math skills, which put you in at least the top ten percent of people educated in our school systems. 😊 Thank you.

We home can a lot of our beef in chunks like you have in your commercially canned stuff. We also do a lot of hamburger that way. It is incredibly versatile. We don't have freezers for meat, so this is how we preserve our home grown beef. It does take a little bit of an adjustment in the way you think about meals, but once you get the hang of it, it's so nice not to worry about thawing out meat for meals, or if the power is going to go out (or freezer break down) and have the meat spoil. YES! BALANCE! I like spam and store bought BBQ sauce etc too. We all have to make compromises in life. Your pantry looks fabulous! Great work!

I was so excited to see that we got an ¨extra long¨ video from you this week! ☺ You are such an inspiration - you help me try to do more for my family when health issues try to hold me back. And you've set a wonderful example of how I should approach my hubbys junk food habit. Youŕe such a blessing.

Jessica, I loved the way you began your proactive "defense" of buying and keeping on hand some store-bought products that your husband or children like. You projected a light-hearted attitude about the subject, explained exactly why you do it, and I'm pretty sure I even saw you wink. I was thinking to myself... this is perfect, and surely even the most bossy busybody wouldn't dare to try to tear you down when you presented your explanation in such a cute and charming way. The KZbinr on another channel I watch says, "My kitchen, my rules; your kitchen, your rules," which comes across to me as non-confrontational but very plain as to her attitude about some harsh, unnecessary criticisms. Love your videos and you and your family. May God continue to bless all of you as you bless us with your knowledge and wisdom. ❤

I’m on team David when it comes to the Ortega taco sauce! I’ve tried every homemade recipe out there (thankfully my hubby will eat anything) but I LOVE the Ortega taco sauce. I will never be without it on my pantry shelf! We have taco Tuesday every week so we go thru a lot of it! 😊

I love how you explain your reasonings for things in such an unapologetic way. You're correct: life is about balance. What a wonderful larder you've built. I look forward to the freezer tours and would love to see a video where you cook with some of those freeze-dried items. I've had my Harvest Right for a year now and continue to learn so much all the time. It would be interesting to see you reconstitute some of those meals and see how they do. I've not yet made the leap to processing meals. So far I've been doing ingredients, which are so convenient to use. A video from you (pending happy results, of course) might be the final push for me to try some meals, too. Thanks for another great video, Jessica. You've kept me company in the kitchen while scrubbing beets. Take care.

Thank you for sharing. Very inspirational. You are wonderful at reflecting the seasons well, both literal and family life and even reflecting unexpected events that make the reality of a well stocked pantry is all about. Because even if we buy our foods from other sources we can be affected by a lack of supply because life happens and we all are affected down the chain. Thanks again Jessica, beautiful pantry! And I would love to see how you manage meal creations from freeze dried foods and how your family liked them. 😁

I am so happy for you to be able to use the basement space to store your food now! I remember you hoping that to be possible for years before. It looks great! Balance in our diets and lives is always important. Gotta keep up the moral with the troops! If ketchup, tabasco, and taco sauce is all it takes to make them happy, by all means do it!

First let me say how much I enjoy your channel and hos much I have learned from you. Thank you for inviting us into your home and life. it makes me sad that you feel that you have to explain and justify items in your pantry. You have every right to have any store bought items you want. No one should be judging you! Mercy you work so hard to provide great food cor your family, anyone who can't see that should watch something else. They clearly don't value you or your channel. You are simply amazing!

Jessica you did a great job talking about the foods that are not maybe the best for us but I have to say your response is beautiful. We need balance in our life and we are all not little robots running around doing the exact same thing that our parents do and figuring out what needs to give and take to make everyone happy is a wonderful thing. Good job and I'm sorry people criticize you for not being perfect in every way. But I'm glad to know that you know your limits you know your family's limits and the Lord knows you! 🙏♥️. God bless your family God bless your efforts and God bless the amount of food you were able to put away this year. 🙏

Jessica, In always look forward to watching your video early Sunday mornings while I drink my coffee. It always inspires me and helps push me forward sometimes when I need it. Honestly, it helps me feel like I’m not alone in some ways. I live in the suburbs and it seems that very few people here try to live more naturally and seasonally. My question regarding a grain mill is: What if the power goes out? I love the idea of milling my own grains, but grains aren’t a big part of our diet. Whole grains seem awesome for storage/preps, but if the power is out, the grain mill won’t work. Thank you for your video and sharing your pantry with us ❤

We have an electric mill for everyday use, but our original mill before we saved up for the fancy one was a hand crank mill. We keep that in storage for power outages.
