I just found your channel, and it really speaks to me. I've been interested in moving to rural Big Island for many years to grow my own food and homestead. I will likely binge-watch your channel, and am so excited for a future move to your neck of the woods. Aloha!

Because of your channel we are now considering moving to Hawaii. I was born in a sub tropical country and something about the tropics always calls to me. We will be praying for God’s guidance.

Hello Beatrice. Hawaii is an interesting place. I understand it’s draw…and that of the tropics in general. Thanks for the comment. We wish you all the best in considering your options.

@@AlohaCountryLiving Thank you for your kind wishes! I suffer from seasonal affective disorder and although Washington State is a beautiful state I suffered a great deal with the harsh winters. I might be able to visit Hawaii with my siblings this September (brother is getting married in Hawaii). If I go I will definitely try to attend Sabbath service on the Big Island! Also, thanks so much for sharing how you are growing your own food! It motivates us and teaches us a lot! May the Lord continue to bless your family and your channel!

I’ve been off grid homesteading on the BI since I was a kid 40 years ago. This is the most accurate “big island pros/cons” list ive seen so far.

Thank you for ur videos. I need to be warm all year, without dangerous animals. Considering Hawaii now. What is the cost of a 5 acre property? How much to build a 4-5 bedroom house? Are there rural properties with decent houses on them? Who is a recommended realtor? Thank you much.

A few additional advantages not directly covered in the video: No cold winters No icy roads No heating necessary No firewood to prepare No food preservation needed Milder summer temperatures (80s) A/C not needed in many locations Lower perceived humidity (trade winds) Lower property taxes (than many states)

I have been to Hawaii years ago when I worked in the hotel industry. It's a beautiful island and reminded me of my own U.S. Virgin Islands. I live in Tennessee now for country living. I left home over seven years ago. Miss the island life, but we are living in different times now. God bless and always looking out for your videos on your progress. Blessings🙏

Where, approximately do you live? Where is the closest town? Also you didn't mention mosquitoes, are there any where you live? Thanks!
@AlohaCountryLiving2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric. Our recommendation is to consider the north east portion of the Big Island. Mosquitoes can be an issue, depending on your set up. Not an issue for us. The keys are to eliminate sources of standing water and location your house where you get plenty of access to the tradewind breezes. This includes clearing around your house site.

Beautiful but too hot and humid year around. That's what makes this world so wonderful, there's different climates for everyone. I personally love the changing seasons, snow and the northern lights. A good greenhouse and a wood stove solves most problems where I'm at in North Idaho.
@AlohaCountryLiving4 жыл бұрын
We agree. :) As you said, there are many different climates and country living opportunities worldwide. Best wishes with your homestead in Idaho!

Thanks for sharing your videos and great advice. I was born in the Caribbean and have been living in the UK for almost 30 years now. Made several attempts to return home but didn't materialise. Just recently bought an acre of land in the Caribbean. I miss the outdoor life a lot especially during the winter 😕 like now. Please help me pray that the Lord will give us the opportunity to build and move this year. It's late in the day - should have done it years ago. I am mostly worried about our teenage son. God bless you mightily in your relationship with Him.

Is it permissible to live in a yurts on the island as a homestead residence and is it good consideration. Enjoy your videos and the info you share God bless
@AlohaCountryLiving3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vonzell. Yes. Yurts can be permitted as legal residences on Hawaii island. It certainly is an option, though I personally would choose a traditional structure. For more information consider visiting yurtsofhawaii .com.

Amazingly accurate list of pros and cons. It’s so true about the islands being a ‘revolving door’, and you are smart to never recommend to anyone to move here. Even for farming, it’s tough. Not exactly ideal. You can get ideal here but it’s going to be the big bucks. I think owning land here is incredible if you have the state of mind that you both and I share. It’s a lot of maintenance as you mentioned. It never stops until the tree canopy’s of the fruit and nut trees planted have had 15 years to develop. Also, Hawaiian isn’t truly tropical, but sub tropical, and so the exotics grow much slower here versus when they are growing in their truly tropical origins. Jackfruit might be the exception.

What's the median average price per acre in your area? I had always wondered why you wouldn't load more videos on your channel ? Thank you for sharing your experiences and posting your content. ....Maranatha Rev 1:03
@AlohaCountryLiving4 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, property prices aren't based on a simple objective measurement (like price per acre). Prices are based on other things. The cost of 5, 10, or 15 acres may not be all that different. What you can be sure of, is that there won't be much to choose from and what little is available will likely be undesirable for various reasons. It can take years to find a good property here...or then again, in the providence of God it could happen overnight. Despite our best efforts, it took us two years of looking to get our property (and that was God blessing our letter writing efforts...it hadn't been on the market in nearly 20 years).
