That was a good rant. I visited a bamboo house on stilts in the Philippines for the first time in my life. I was amazed how it felt being in suck a structure. The tactility of it, how it felt on my bare feet while I was walking the bamboo floor. And it's typhoon resistant. Thank you for the video and please make some more building with bamboo series.

running bamboo is invasive but its WAY more beneficial than most if not all other invasive plants. its better at co2 capture, and can be used to make a wide range of products. i just started a 1600sqft Japanese timber bamboo grove (with a root barrier) specifically to build fences, and outdoor furniture with.

Aloha Sean, you make a lot of great points about building with bamboo,I was watching your video about building with bamboo and I was interested in more building techniques but there isn’t much practical knowledge readily available. So it would be an amazing resource if classes or workshops were here on the island. I picked up a few species of bamboo last week from a farm in Papaikou but dendrocalamus giganteus was sold out. Mahalo for the videos man they are great. I really enjoy the channel.

Thanks for watching, I wish I had a dendrocalamus species at my place or where to get my hands on some. We are definitely lacking on the training. I did post 2 videos earlier on preserving bamboo and documented a little roof frame I made for a lanai extention for my bamboo house. Maybe those can help in the meantime. Hopefully we get some Indonesians out here when all this Pandemic stuff calms down.

I am on the mainland (Kentucky), and I am looking into uses for bamboo. I started out looking for a browse for my goats, then I saw some of it's other potential uses. I agree, it seems rather foolish for Hawaii to not be taking full advantage of the plant. But, most politicians are foolish.

Goats! That’s what I was looking into. How to feed them so they are not eating off of the ground and getting parasites. Then I just fell down this rabbit hole of bamboo! Welcome back! I think the best thing to do would be to get a few builders from Indonesia out here to help us skill up. We can run a bunch of press on the event and then use the momentum to pressure the govt for code changes. People have been trying dor.many years to get bamboo legal, but I dont think there is a mass amount of people who even really know about the issue. We get the people, then we can make a change.

It seems rare for any government to allow code charges unless there money to be made or taxes to collect. Have you tried reaching out to bamboo living to ask them what steps they took to get permits? Also, if Hilo university has a sustainability program you might be able to get their help with permits / code variances. Sorry if I'm way off the mark but trying to learn as much about life on Hawaii and some of the local issues.

The 9nly way bamboo living can do what they do is by having the whole house pre assembled at an approved facility in Indonesia then it gets shipped here. Luckily we have someone running for mayor that will make a change in this direction. I just hope he wins.

I just looked this up because someone claimed that Hawaiians did not use bamboo for building but that they only used it for making tools, instruments and dishes. However, they did use bamboo or 'ohe as structural members in construction, just never to the level of the Indonesians.

My wife and I are looking at a 3 acre lot in Hawaiian Acres, but I think its pretty rocky. Can you recommend a company or local peeps that can strip land? Any idea on cost for 1 acre of stripping for example?

Pretty rocky in most spots in puna. The price will go up if you actually have diggable soil. These days an acre of land clear can run anywhere from $8k to $10k for someone to do a good job. There is Alani bulldozing. Does great work, honest but you'll pay for it. You can ask on the homestead' Hawaii fb group for more suggestions. Mahalo for watching the videos!

What permit laws are you referring to? Bamboo Living is 100% from Vietnam and 100% (- the bolts) bamboo but they have permits to build on the Big Island. I would love nothing more than bamboo farms on the Big Island especially if they're done in a sustainable and respectful manner towards native flora. We need more native only homesteads for flora and farming on the island. Mahalo nui!

@@surlystudios5451 the only way their homes are permitted is because everything has been reassembled in a facility in Indonesia that is approved. The only one of it's kind that's approved in the US. Now we just have to get a facility like that here, then export prefabbed homes to the mainland, but first Hawaii

Most people will be happy to have you come and cut bamboo if you use it. It only takes 3 to 5 years to grow a usable stalk. I have 2 clumps at my place.
