I was just thing I loved getting the foam when Granny opened a new jar of jelly when you said that. My Granny always put up her pear preserves in her old Cremora coffee creamer bottles. Most people would scream if they saw someone do that now but she raised 10 kids and fed lots of grandkids and no one ever got sick from her food.

Tessie, this brought back lots of memories. I made jam this way from growing up until well into my married life. We were overseas for many years and periodically when we came home I would hear about "rules changing." When we came home to stay in the mid 90's it was a lot of new rules and I followed them. This still looks safe to me, especially with all the detailed warnings you gave. However, I well remember how we always needed to check carefully to see if the wax had been breached, if there was mold, or so many other things. Yes, there were times when we scraped the layer of mold off and ate it anyway. I think the biggest thing that changed, though, was when we started adding less and less sugar. Nowadays I watch my sugar consumption very carefully, so not much jam gets consumed. Those were the days.

Grape Jelly was the first thing my Mom taught me to make and can at 12 years old and we covered the top with paraffin. From 14 years old I made all the jams and jellies at our house because Mom was so busy with the big garden and farm chores. I still love making Jelly but do not have the grape arbor we had then as I was growing up. Tessie you are wonderful at explaining every detail and showing exactly how to can safely and successfully.

Isn't it amazing how kids were trusted with tasks like that years ago, Beth? It must have felt so good to know how much you contributed to the family when you were put in charge of the jam/jelly making at age 14. These days, when people have to go away it's not unusual for them to find a babysitter for a 14 year old who needed to stay home! A few decades ago that would have been considered incredible -- at 14 many girls were very capable when it came to child care and housekeeping. They would have *been* the babysitter, rather than needing one! Times have changed.

Haha! I also always feel like I need a huge “this ain’t USDA approved but we’re doing it anyway” banner every time I make a canning video. Hi Tessie, thanks for the video. I remember seen a box just like you showed at my Gramma's house. I knew she canned apricot jelly from the apricots grown on the trees in the backyard (I miss her apricot jelly, store-bought just isn't that same). But never knew how she did or what the process was to do things like that. Thankfully some of the old ways were passed down from your grandparents to parents to you, wish I could say the same.

Boy does this bring back a lot of memories for me! My grandma used wax when she made jelly and jam. Back then there were no plastic jars for jelly, Mayo or peanut butter etc. it was all glass. Grandma reused all glass jars and their lids for jelly. We loved the wax pouring part. She washed off the wax plugs well when we opened the jar and she reused them. Sometimes for jelly and sometimes for emergency candles. I’m not so sure I would trust those flimsy plastic films for storage you had though. This may be a good use for those used canning lids in excellent condition that I would not reuse for any other type of canning. Great video Tessie. Thanks for the memories.

Your grape jelly looks delicious Tessie. A little tip about the cellaphone jam covers - if you pour a little cooled boiled water in a saucer and gently lay the cover on top you then smooth the wet side down over your jars and put rubber band on. You will find it easier and the cover is sealed tight when dry with no wrinkles.🐾🥰

Hey Tessie, when I was young I used parafin, but now since many many years instead of using parafin, you can also put your jams or jelly in the jars, put the lids on (not plastic lids) and turn your jar upside down. Lets cool down and it will seal. Only for jams with sugar !! Maybe you can give it a try. Greetings from Belgium :)

Well Tessie you answered my question if I could use and reuse the paraffin wax and will it get a harder in the refrigerator. I never seen this before first time ever and what a smart idea I think Our ancestors knew exactly what they were doing. And I do remember those grapes when you and your husband were picking them I do have a question though? If I make elderberry juice I have dried elderberries can I do the same thing with the juice and just add the sugar and pectin which I’ve never tried the liquid pectin I only have the powdered pectin. I get it if you can’t answer the question because I’m sure people asking tons of questions every day but I was just wondering thank you honey have a great night
