My grocery store had spiral hams on sale this past week for 87 cents per pound! I bought one, divided up the ham in serving size baggies for the freezer. Then I took the ham bone, covered it with water, and pressure cooked it. I got several peanut butter jars full of wonderful ham broth for the freezer. I do the same with chicken when it is on sale. Food doesn't have to be expensive.

Growing up my mum worked with whatever she had and what ever was in season in our garden. I was brought up in N.Ireland. We loved her creations. Our favorites where the cheapest. In fact I didn’t like the expensive meals in friends houses lol. My favorite was neck of lamb! Yummmmm My grand father was a taxi driver and grew potatoes and vegetables. He fed many many neighbors that had no food in the Second World War and after. Being less well off and Christian can mean you are far better off than “rich” people when times are tough. You remind me of him,and that’s an enormous compliment.❤️

I enjoy having the nice plumbing and not having to draw water from the wall as I used to do before I left home. It’s so wonderful not to have to go out to a cold toilet to relieve one’s self. But I have lived without the nicer things and I know how. I could do it again if I had to and I would be clean and happy. Hope it never comes to that but I could if I needed to, I’ve done it before.

Tessie you have a great life with loving family near. It's a great feeling to have loving family close and friends near. You share so many useful things. My parents and relatives taught and showed me alot of ways that you share. My mom canned and made Lye soap for to clean their garden hands for certain laundry stains. We always have a bar of Fels Naptha soap in the house today. She taught me to make my clothes and quilts and crochet things. My aunt crocheted an sold the most beautiful afghans and sold them for extra income. Mama when I was a baby took in laundry to help with the bills. So many weren't taught the wonderful things we have learned and I still learn so much from you and appreciate all that you share and teach. Thank you my friend. Your one in a million. Thank the Lord he guided you with the knowledge to teach and up lift so many people.

My son makes a very good ham bone soup with veggies and barley. My husband was a very good cook as was his parents; mostly European/Baltic dishes. They were both born in Latvia and my husband in Belgium, where his parents lived for a couple of years as displaced refugees before emigrating to Canada when Victor was one year old.

Tessie I watched that same video where her Thanksgiving was ruined. I thought about what I would do if we lost water and electric. I think I would be ok as far as water goes. My stove is electric but that will be changed out when the stove I have goes. I could build a fire to cook over or use a grill. The problem I would have is the bathroom. I have one large bowl like that and I love it! Whenever I get a recipe off the internet I write it down just in case the internet isn’t available the next time I want it. Plus our internet service goes out from time to time. Being prepared for any potential problem in life is always a good idea. I prep because I was caught with my perverbial pants down after a car accident and had to rely on food stamps to feed my family and it was no near enough ($85/mo for 3 people) and we struggled to make ends meet for 2 yrs.
@laurenandreas59503 жыл бұрын
Desert Family Homestead, That’s a scary & sad story! I prep because my dad left my mother with 3 young kids and stopped sending money regularly. We ate mustard and onion sandwiches, my Mother ate ‘milk toast’ for breakfast and I don’t even remember eating before school. I grew up in Orlando, Fl so, we were in a neighborhood not out in the country side. There weren’t food banks like today and ‘free food’! I have never had an empty pantry since I’ve been an adult and I hope I never will! I would rather buy food and supplies than beauty products any day! In the old days people always were preppers, because we never know what tomorrow will bring. I want to be prepared just like Tessie! God Bless All Of You On This Site!!!
@desertfamilyhomestead31273 жыл бұрын
@@laurenandreas5950 it was a scary time. If it weren’t for family and friends bringing us food each month I don’t know what I would have done. There was only one food bank in our town at the time and if you received food stamps they didn’t help you. It never failed every month an older lady who lived down the street would call me while I was looking at what little bit of food items I had left and say “I have a craving for such and such and I’m fixing it tonight for supper and I am keeping my portion and bringing you the rest” well it turned out she brought the whole meal to us and it was always enough for at least 2 full meals. One time she brought us a bunch of Campbell’s soups, bread, cheese, butter and a big bag of apples when we had maybe enough food for 2 more days. When my husband’s sister found out that we were struggling with enough food and we were in better shape she would ask us to babysit her kids and she gave us her extra food stamps she had each month(they had 4 kids and all 4 were on WIC and they received $500+ in stamps each month), believe me that extra really helped a lot and I would stock up on what I could get on sale to help with the leaner months. It there were the food banks and other Churches giving out food like there is today it wouldn’t have been a struggle for us at all. My parents didn’t have a lot of money due to my mother and brother having kidney disease and lots of medical bills. Sometimes we ate stew or beans 2 or 3 nights in a row and she would make a batch of cornbread each day. The next day I watched her put the leftover cornbread in a glass and pour milk over it to eat for breakfast and later I found out she didn’t eat again until supper on those days. I always knew money was tight for them but they really tried to hide how tight it was and it wasn’t until I was a teen that I figured out how tight it was. Since we recovered from our accident I have never had an empty pantry either and I keep my freezer stocked well also. Food is more important than beauty products to me too. God bless you too.

I'm with you, unless there was a catastrophe where I HAD to leave my house, this is where I am hunkering down. A realtor here told me that people bought "bug out" land during the pandemic. Well, get ready to haul most of what you own out there to try to survive. No thanks!

Hi Tessie! Loved your video and message today.💖 It's in a way a little bit strange that people can think so differenly about one and the same thing, (like the plumbing, for example)... Me, as being a former volonteer in the Swedish Air Force, have been learning a lot of good survival/self sufficient stuff and I am so happy for that..... But more people would benefit from learning the same... How many knows for example what to do if the power went out for a couple of days/weeks, when they are living in an apartment right in the middle of a big city, Do they know how to keep warm during cold winter nights, how to cook to get warm food or where to get water or how to clean the water...Not many I think. Among my friends, not many did know about it, before told them... So with your videos you are doing a good work on how to teach people how to survive during bad times...💖🥰💖 And this with the story about the toilett paper, (We had the same going on here in Sweden , yes all over Europe actually), it's in a way ridiculous, I mean, it's very easy to replace, but many can't look no further than the empty shelves in the store... So we, who know what to do, have to pass our knowlege forward... Lots of Love from Sweden 🇸🇪

Hi Tessie sis. 🌞 I make "concoctions" a lot. Family approved. Yours looks great! TFS 💜 I finally got a Mueller pressure canner like Grampy Campy’s!!! Jars and lids in short supply and subject to price gouging!!! Will be trying soon.

I personally like to write down recipes that the family will like, then give the cookbooks away. I also like using the computer program Evernote, as basic is free with plenty of space to write. I write on it almost daily and they haven't limited me in three years. If they do, I still have an online resource of all my favorite tips and tricks, and recipes. That is how I weed out excess magazines and books.
