Check your supply pond at night after the pump goes off and again the next morning to see how well it recovers over night. Do the same on the upper bid pond to see if you have any leaks. Evaporation overnight shouldn’t be a factor

Best thing to do would be a flow meter on the end of that pipe, that would give you an exact daily number

I would be surprised if you find at some stage the big pond is feeding the small pond through a rock fissure. I was hoping when you dyed the top pond you left the bottom pond natural and slowly saw it turn blue without dying.

As a Firefighter I know the importance of the intake strainer. I think the number of holes is limiting your flow more than you realize. If you look at strainers for many types of pumps they have many more holes.

Just a thought , could you run another set of wires from your new solar panels up to you pole building and make a solar charge station for your power banks ? Or since you made your solar grid expandable add two more panels dedicated to the pole building charging system . You would then have all your batteries charged for free so to speak . Adam, another great update. I find this pond series very interesting. It would be interesting to have you go out to lower pond in the morning and see how much the lower pond fills overnight. Might be helpful to also mark that overflow pipe in the lower pond with inch markings to see quickly how much the water level changes.

Use servos and acuators so the panels will track the sun, pump the bottom pond down for the winter in case you need more storage unexpectedly 😊

Adam can pond 3 refill pond 2.... Can you back feed the pond or just add in a basic pump you had in the stream a few years ago and back feed it... We need measuring sticks in each pond ... So we can calculate recovery rates.

Adam you can find out exact gallons to Pond 1 by metering amps real time draw from your pump and know the impeller speed will give you total gallons.

You should also add a water level gauge to the lower pond and it will be easier to measure loss as well you will be able to see how much it comes up over night from the ground water going back into it. Keep us posted !!!

I was was watching you go through your numbers initially and picked up on your generous estimate and stopped the video to explain to my wife what made me laugh. She never watches any YT but does listen some in the background. When I explained your back story (including your day job before going YT full time) and stated that you should have caught that….without watching or hearing anything more than what she heard today, she said that you would eventually catch your boo-boo and would correct it. I restarted the video and in no time, it was her turn to laugh as you declared your own over-estimation and walked through the math on your new mean average. I would add a small pump and panel to the lower ponds, but hook the discharge end to a fountain type sprinkler, keep a battery hooked up on a switch, turn it on in the evenings sitting around the fire pit for ascetics..

You should also look at the electrical cost savings. Figure out the wattage used during a full day and what that would cost for a grid tied pump then compare to this solar set up for ROI

We put solar on our house today, partly DIY. We stay off grid for most of the time. Some days HVAC is rough, and we haven't been through winter yet (we only have heat pump) but expect it to be SIGNIFICANTLY lower that previously. But we are pretty conservative overall anyway. Great series, keep it up!

On a cloudy day my solar panels make about 10kWh this time of year. On a sunny day they make about 70kWh. On a rainy day they make like 2kWh. I'm in PA with a 16kW system.

Thats some good clean water getting pumped from the lower pond. Not sure what you have planned for the pump intake but you could build a small dock at the lower pond where you made the sitting area and submerge the intake on one of the legs which would keep you away from the bank but give easy access for maintenance.....

I think you might want to run a wire when you bury the pipe to sense when the the upper pond needs water and then have the lower pond. Also on a float saying when it can't deliver water then you can pretty much have the whole thing automatic. When the upper pond needs water it will call for water and when the lower pond can't deliver water it won't

Wow that pump is working really really nice on a sunny day, that's a lot of water coming in and a constant flow. Really nice to see it. I know the electric company is not going to call you, but how much did all this setup cost? It's nice to not have to pay bills, but if the whole project is what you would have been billed monthly over the next 5 years, having to pay all that at once changes things a lot. Solar gets really really expensive really really fast.

It'd be so cool if there was some easily usable software that would let you use your drone to take pictures of the ponds then trace the edges to do the surface area calculations. Then you'd do this at every inch of change in the pond and actually know that when the pond is at 6' then an inch of water is N gallons, and 6' 1" it's M gallons, etc. Then put a flow meter on the pump to know exactly how many gallons you're dumping in. Of course, the stick measure wouldn't be accurate enough, so we'd need a drone with RTK and LIDAR capabilities for exact height measurements... I love statistics like that.
