Clark Johnson doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He has done episodes as an actor, writer, and producer for some of the greatest shows ever, The Wire, Homicide, Sons of Anarchy, The Shield. I mean he is an amazing talent.

He is a member of a very talented family from Toronto, Ontario. His sisters Molly and Taborah are well known in Canada. He was in a Canadian show called Night Heat which also ran in the States.

I am watching this after Andre Braugher's passing and then finding out that Richard Beltzer is gone too. I'd like to think that Andre, Richard and Yaphet Kotto are in detective heaven playing poker. Years ago, I actually hunted down the police precinct that was used for the exteriors of the show in Baltimore. May they all rest in peace.

At 50:30, Clark mentions that Baltimore was a principal character in the show. I totally agree with him. But I also have to add that "the board" was also a character because of the way the cast interacted with the board.

This was pure gold to me. I have lived in Baltimore my entire life and was privileged to be an extra on two episodes of this wonderful show. My next film project is to revisit certain areas of where the show was filmed and do my own documentary of how it looked then and how it looks now. Plus, it's been a while since I've had a drink in the Waterfront Bar that Munch, Bayliss, and Lewis owned back in the day. :: wink :: Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed watching it. I for one would be very interested in the "Then & Now Locations" film for Homicide! Having done something similar myself for a show set where I live in England, it's a really fascinating process finding these places and then comparing how they've changed over time. My favorite show of all time, by far! I love these guys and my brain partially refuses to accept that they are actors. A part of me firmly believes that Pembleton, Munch, Lewis, Crosetti, Bolander, Bayliss, Giardello, Howard, Kellerman,......are real people, real detectives, living and working in Baltimore. Amazing!

Great point. Their acting is literally transcendental - in that it goes beyond mere acting. For a long time, I believed that Andre Braugher had really had a stroke. Remember, this show aired before internet, social media etc..

Frank Pembleton played the best Cop on any TV show or any Movie ever period! Not even a close second..... His time in the box with Adina Watson's killer won an Emmy I believe! It was epic!

Every cop on The Wire is a vastly superior character. Pembleton, which is the name of the character and not the actor, is still a great character but he's nowhere as complex or multi layered as any of the cop characters on The Wire. And also, his character was damaged by changes the show suffered from season 3 and onwards at the ends of NBC wanting to boost ratings.

I first saw Homicide in the UK on Channel 4. Despite having no knowledge of the intricacies of US policing and social problems, the acting, script and deep black humour mixed in with ocassional bursts of horror had me instantly captivated. 'Homicide' proves that great art transcends borders and is truly universal.

Craig, a comment on a different LOTS clip post that the reason for it not being on streaming services, an perhaps syndication across the NBC platforms, is because of disagreements over music royalties. I don't understand enough about that subject. But frankly, I think there was always, even when it was in production and airing, that there was alot of pressure against the program from the NBC tops because there were so many Black principal and powerful characters. LOTS was an interesting an marked difference from L&O Original. That's why I really enjoyed their crossover stories. The Ghirardello character couldn't happen in L&O Original. I really liked both shows, though.

@@melotone3305 Part of it could be that it wasn't particularly popular then, and likely would be less no now. But I remember the Nina Simone 'Sinnerman' song on there so you could be onto something. I watched the Hugh Wilson Emmy interviews and he said WKRP died out of syndication because when the music royalties needed to be renegotiated, they wanted ten times the money for it.

I was a kid when I watched it for the first time, then I saw some episodes maybe a decade ago, and now I am re-watching it again. I have to say, there is a new perspective every time, my understanding is changing with age. As is the case with any genuine work of art!

I so much enjoyed this! A million thanks! I was immediately attracted to this at first go. The Starring...this one, that one...ahh..to live for! The black and white presentation, and when I saw Andre...I immediately saw drama..(my very first time seeing him too) When I saw the name Yaphet Kotto..when I heard them drums, I was caught! And the first episode, the introduction of all these characters, it was so natural, so smooth, so real and true to reality! The very first Episode did it! I saw Winner!!!

For me Hill St Blues led the way, especially with criminals getting off on technicalities, then this took things one stage further. Still the best American cop show of the lot, even better than the Hill. That's saying something too.

Miami Vice , to me was the first cop show, where criminals sometimes walked and cooperating witnesses or CIs were killed. I had never seen that before, on cop shows.

Why do people do this? I say something, someone then points out "no it was this" and then carry on when shown it wasn't. That's an opinion. Miami Vice was a typical dull American cop show to me. The Hill was gritty and you obviously weren't paying attention if you think people didn't get off for helping or killed. Goodnight.

David Bushman really did a disservice with his introduction. Lumping HLOTS with more popular but lesser quality shows like NYPD Blue and Law and Order as police procedural is really not giving credit to Homicide which was clearly not a procedural but a character study each and every episode no loud Bwooooongs between scenes, just good old fashioned drama and human interaction. Homicide had the best cast for the first 5 seasons and we are truly lucky to have witnessed this show.

Never seen the show before seeing the movie here on KZbin. I gotta say it's a pretty cool show with such talent in the casting. It's weird how I never heard much about it before. You'd think it'd be bigger than Law and Order, NCIS, the gazillion Chicago shows lol. Barney Miller is the sitcom equivalent I think.

I'm curious how Belzer compares his time on Homicide and SVU. I'm betting he only did SVU for the paycheck because there's no comparison, especially Munch's character who had nowhere near the great material or focus he had compared to Homicide.

Excellent point. It was the reverse for Jerry Orbach. On SVU he mainly got to do only sour wisecracks. On his few Homicide episodes his acting was great, just what you expect from such an accomplished actor.

actually when he got invited to do SVU he suggested to Dick Wolf to reprise his role as Munch and Wolf loved the idea and decided to add Munch into SVU.

that was the season it kind of jumped the shark. Yeah, like that was EVER going to happen. They replaced melissa leo with a cutesy detective and falzone I think his name was. but it was still better than almost anything else on tv. Even at its weakest, which says a lot about tv.

Well, I love only 3 seasons of the show. Then they lost their originality. Crosetti was gone, that was the beginning of the end of this glory story. The 3rd season was great because of Andre Braugher who ... that was so bloody great! ... nailed Steve Mcqueen in such a terrific way! Sometimes I believed that I saw SM!

So nobody is gonna ask about the Luther Mahoney shooting??????? The gun was down, but it was still in his hand. That made that shooting justified! Luther was a violent drug kingpin and a gun in his hand is a threat period. What is more, he took that gun from a police officer (Meldrick Lewis) while violently fighting that police officer.

One character that would have been great: John Waters, a Baltimore native son. He would have made an excellent murderer. I think they could made a very clever episode featuring him. Homicide was known for clever episodes, though.

Never paid attention to the fact that Frank was black. Just saw a great actor playing a great role. What a horrible thing to say, No Pembleton, no Obama. Obama is a huge mistake for this country, Frank wasn't.

As a young black man seeing another black male who is a dedicated husband, intelligent, drive, compassionate, yet not willing to be stepped on was very empowering for me. Not sure if you're white but the whole "ignoring race" isn't progressive, race, culture etc is very much important

@@wukong1066 You misunderstand. The shallow people who ONLY see color was my point. That statement that he made was shallow. You see Pembleton as a role model because you look alike and I don't believe there is anything wrong with that. It's natural to gravtitate to ones that we have things in common with. I don't ignore race. I just see it as part of who a person is and not their only distinguishing identity. I love that there are different people in the world. If I didn't then I would be cut off from a large part of my immediate family.
