My 2015 Honda CR-V (2.4 liter with 71K miles) began burning oil after I switched out Valvoline 0W/20 with Mobil 1 0W/20. I switched back about 7500 miles later when my wife mentioned that a light was coming on when she either stopped or took off. I checked the oil and the dipstick was dry! I topped the oil off with 2.5 Quarts of Mobil 1 then drained about a week later and replaced with Valvoline 0W/20 and replaced the PCV valve (old one and new one rattled when shook).I then began to keep a close check on the dipstick. I initially I saw some oil loss on the dipstick over a few thousand miles but after a 2nd change and after a 900 mile round trip the oil level is still fine. My wife usually drives the CR-V and drives easy. I decided that while on this trip that I would make several high RPM fast pulls to see because I had read about carbon buildup in the cylinders. Now with 1550 miles after the oil change, the oil on the dipstick hasn’t moved. The only conclusion that I can come to is that the Mobil 1 oil is the reason for the oil consumption. I will continue to monitor. Hope this may help anyone who’s having oil consumption issues with the 2.4.

RB The Mechanic I have a 2014 Accord and oil was low at 40% life and I started seeing oil light flash on and off. I added 1 quart of synthetic because that’s what the dealer switched to before the last oil change. Went for the oil change at dealer and they said it was lucky I hadn’t blown up the engine. The oil was never low before this. I told them it was a leak somewhere. They came back to me and said it was timing cover leaking. Do you think it’s the synthetic oil seeping through some seals because it’s thinner than regular oil?

Or the problem is not the oil?thanks Honda gang 🤙🏽

97,000 miles and mine does great as far as oil consumption. I’m at about 4k miles since my last oil change (I only use synthetic) and the oil level is near the top of the indicator. Very happy how mine has performed thus far, I’ve had 0 mechanical problems and the only maintenance I’ve done is oil and filter change every 6k miles. Just now I did transmission fluid, brakes rotors & pads, brake fluid, coolant, spark plugs and serpentine belt and engine air filter. Hoping to get another 100,000 miles at least!

Here is a tip on how to handle this problem, based on my experience in getting my Honda dealer to cover this repair on my 2009 Accord. My car was repaired under Honda Safety recall #JN9 which covered the sticking piston rings that was the cause excessive oil consumption and damage to my timing chain. When you go to the dealer, you will have to pay up front for an oil change, then return to the dealer after driving 1000 miles to have the level checked. They may tell you that Honda considers "normal" oil consumption to be 1 quart over 1000 miles, but any reputable mechanic will tell you that is baloney. I have always had a high opinion of my Honda dealership, but my dealership was deceitful, and tried to pull a fast on on me by adding an extra quart of oil to the crankcase during the oil change and refill, so you should tell them that you want to witness and confirm the oil level on the dipstick PRIOR to you taking possession of your car. That way, when you return for the 1000 mile inspection it will show the TRUE consumption rate. If you don't already know how to read a dipstick, then I suggest you have someone show you before going to the dealer so they can't BS you. Also, if you currently hear a rattling noise from your engine upon acceleration, your timing chain may have become slack from oil deprivation, so insist that they check that too. Since my timing chain was slack beyond tolerance it was a covered repaired under the recall, along with the piston ring replacement repair, all at no charge. I even got them to give me a loaner car for the 4 days that they had my car in the shop. The repair was made over 3 years ago, and I have no further issues with oil consumption or a rattling timing chain. I really love my Accord, but I am pretty sour on Honda as a corporation, for they showed their true colors when it came time to honor their warranty. Do your research and become informed so if the dealership tries to dance around their obligation to make repairs, you can challenge them. Lots of luck to you.

I have the same car and it’s doing the same thing. I remember checking the oil a few weeks after my last oil change, and let me tell you, it is infuriating to see NO OIL in a car I’m still making payments on. It pisses me off thinking about what amount of wear and tear may already have occurred. Also, it turns out that Honda is aware of the problem to some degree, based on the availability of multiple TSBs (technical service bulletins) stating that this is a known issue. I want to get it fixed, but that $718 sounds a little scary right now as I am a college student. What ended up being the problem, just that valve??

What is sad, is they are blaming a pcv valve. While pcv valves will eventually cause a problem, my daughters cross tour ( a modified accord) has 10,000 miles original and it’s burning oil very bad. Honda has tested it and stated it’s not a consumption problem. This oil as shown in the tail pipe, will eventually plug up the catalytic converter! When and if she damages her engine, or requires a catalytic converter, even if the vehicle is beyond warranty Honda will be looking after her I promise! If the tail pipe deposits are black and wet, it is oil. In this case the deposits were black, dry, and sooty. That is a by product of direct injection and nearly all cars with this "technology" will have sooty exhaust pipes... not to mention carboned -up valves.

VALVOLINE IS MUCH BETTER: I have a 2016 Honda Accord Sport. Purchased new w/ 3 miles. I first ran Honda synthetic blend 0-20W oil and I saw consumption in excess of what I would like. Enough that during long change intervals calculated by computer I would need to top it off. Eventually switched to Valvoline Modern Engine 0-20W full synthetic. This is now discontinued. But I was buying it at Walmart for about $40 for a 5 qt. jug. It was marketed for GDI engines with the claim that it reduced carbon (coking) buildup on the intake valves. I immediately noticed a significant reduction in oil consumption with the Valvoline. Significant enough that I would not longer need to top off between changes. But I also wanted to verify I wasn't crazy so I switched back to Honda synthetic blend and the oil consumption returned. I switched back again to the Valvoline and the consumption essentially went away. So I have been through about 4-5 oil changes with the Valvoline and it has been consistent. After I had trouble finding it I discovered it was discontinued. At that point I went online and bought up a bunch of remaining stock I could find. My car has 70,000 miles on it. Based on current product offering the most equivalent oil according to Valvoline is their Advanced Full Synthetic. I hope this helps some of you people out with oil consumption issues on this engine. For me, using the Valvoline made this problem disappear. Separate topic but I also recently switched from the Honda MTF in the 6sp manual to the Amsoil synchromesh. The Amsoil is a little better than the Honda MTF when cold. I found that when cold the manual transmission can be a little stubborn especially engaging 1st gear at a rolling stop. It really won't slip into 1st easily when cold if the wheels are turning. Once warmed up everything is slick as butter both with Honda MTF and Amsoil and I can return to executing my "California stops" the way I want.

@@RBTheMechanic Hello RB . if you need more info also 3 qts of 0w 20 and 1 qt of 5 w 20. mix specialy in the summer. i dont have this issue any more. install a catch can oil keep the PVC valve clean at all the time because it clogs very easy after 3 month, also help to keep intake valves & manifold clean, I though my engine was worn with only 35 K miles , but what really happens is the oil is to thin for this engine ( to keep EPA gas mileges regulations) and it goes up in the cylinder and became to burn it . the engine also creates very strong compresion and with that lots of blow back is going to PVC valve and it gets dirty very easy. winter time I just keep 4 qts of 0w 20 . here in NY is cold and works good on those low tempetures. i hope i help with this.

All engines get some amount of blow by on older engines as rings and piston walls wear . For high compression engines it’s a killer . Now , these engines were not made to please the tuner / racer crowd and most people are careless owners to begin with. When buying used , be mindful of the car’s history ( CarFax ) and a one owner is a safe bet if it was a senior who had the money for regular servicing . In colder climates it’s almost essential to install a air / oil separator ( mishimoto )

I opened the radiator cap and there was an overflow and the coolant reservoir is above max level. Can it be something with the pistons and/or piston rings, head gasket, and or pcv valve? Dang, I hoped they'd fixed that by now. My 2004 was running pretty well with 160000 miles, but unlike my previous 2004, I had to keep adding oil. My friend is also my mechanic. He said he couldn't pass it for emissions because it was burning oil. I couldn't believe it, but he showed me the tailpipe and it was worse than the car in your video. He looked it up online and said it was a known problem, but rare. The rings were worn out. I wasn't excited to rebuild the engine, so he found me an engine from the junkyard and that engine hasn't had any problems - I have to remember to check the oil occasionally, but it's always up to the line. So, some cars 10 years newer than my 2004 are having the same problem. Why?

Switch to 5W30 oil. It helps tremendously. People will tell you "it's not designed for that oil" but the reality is that IT'S NOT DESIGNED TO BURN OIL EITHER! Just take the bull by the horns and use a slightly heavier oil. It's not going to hurt the engine.

Used 5W20 weight oil and see if it helps? As the internal walls, rings and cylinder wears the thin oil are lightly will get passed the oil rings and seal since its getting worn. You can also buy an oil sealer and that may helps rejuvenate any worn seals etc.. I'll go with switching to the heavier oil weight first.

To those asking if they should buy a Honda Accord in light of these very well documented issues...answer is yes, buy it. A month later come on here to talk about how your Honda is drinking oil like drunken sailor. I think its idiotic to buy one of these cars. I have owned 3 cars in my life. Honda Prelude (1992), Civic (2001) and Accord (2013). By far the Accord is the worse of them all. Burned oil from day one. Replaced the rear calipers at 60k they were frozen. Wheel hub at 80k miles. The oil drinking was not bad enough to qualify for replacement parts. Recently in 1500 miles it went through 2 quarts. Replacing the PCV this weekend. I'm SOL since the car has 100k miles and is not covered in the current TSB or extended warranty they are offering the 8th gen accords. The Honda of today, is NOT the same Honda of the 80s, 90s or 00s. Consumer reports ranked them lower in reliability than Kia, Hyundai and 10 other manufacturers in 2019 (maybe 2020, not sure). Check out the CR-V and accord turbo engine issues. They have the opposite issue. The oil level increases....gas is mixing with oil. There is a class action law suit. I have also owned Honda lawnmowers, motorcycles and generators. I will never own a Honda car again. Buy cars based on data. Consumer reports is a good place to start. Currently top three rankings got to Mazda, Toyota, Lexus in that order.
