Honda Accord (and Honda CRV) with Earth Dreams engine has engine oil burning / oil consumption issue which typically starts after 60K+ miles. Honda has used this engine in Accord, CR-V, Civic and may be more and engine oil burn issue also exists in these vehicles This video shows simple fix that has almost resolved this issue.
Most vehicle owners become aware of the engine burning oil issue either when they check oil level, or from their oil change shop. I was shocked to discover the issue because my other (older) Honda / Acura vehicles never had this issue.. there was zero oil consumption in them.

TOOLS & SUPPLIES:
* Ratchet with 10 mm socket & extension
Home & Auto Tool set, amzn.to/39VPfbG
TIME NEEDED:
* under 10 mins
STEP BY STEP PROCESS:
* Locate the Valve Assembly (red color)
* Open the 10mm bolt that holds the assembly to engine
* Remove the old PCV valve assembly
* Insert the new PCV valve and tighten the bolt
RESULTS - After 25K miles:
Replacing the PCV valve immediately fixed the oil burn issue for the most part. The car works awesome with minimal oil consumption and best mpg even 25K miles after the PCV valve replacement ! Based on my experience here are my two cents to handle this issue:
a) Replace the PCV valve
b) Change engine oil 3K-4K miles interval
c) If currently on 7K mile schedule for oil & filter change at a shop, do mid-cycle (3.5K change) at home with just drain-fill of engine oil.
d) Check oil level every 1K mile
e) Plan to replace PCV valve again in about 50K miles
There is no permanent engine burning oil fix and the points mentioned above are not a permanent solution because the real issue is with Honda's 'Earth Dreams' engine which is in this model of Accord, 2017 CRV and other Honda vehicles. The car burning oil repair cost can be high and there is a class action lawsuit on Honda for the defective engine ... just google it with these key words and you will find it. Doing above is a work around and temporary solution until Honda provides a permanent / long term fix.
OIL LEAK AROUND ENGINE:
The oil stain outside engine is due to leaking valve cover gasket. Blocked (bad) PCV valve leads to higher pressure in the engine which causes leak in valve cover gasket. This leaking gasket along with other changes in the car were tell tale signs that sadly I didn't catch early enough :( These signs included: lower mpg, funky smell from exhaust, carbon deposit in exhaust pipe, low acceleration, and then the oil burning .
After replacing the PCV valve the oil burn issue was almost gone. Considering that car was at 95K miles I had the spark plugs replaced and valves adjusted, which automatically includes valve cover gasket replacement so I go more 'value' vs just getting gasket replaced.
Had it done at Honda dealer for $399 + tax in January. It is usually slow season for their service dept so I shopped around and negotiated on price. I could have saved some money by doing the work myself but I was busy at the time and potential savings weren't as substantial so I went with getting it done at the dealer.
** UPDATE, MARCH 2023 **
The Accord is now at approx 140,000 miles or about 45K miles after I made this video, and I have changed the PCV valve again! Vehicle had become sluggish, miles per gallon dropped, and engine oil consumption increased to a quart of oil gone after 2000 miles - these are all the things that happened at about 90K miles so understood that PCV valve is likely going bad so I replaced it. I didn't want to wait for the engine's valve cover gasket to start leaking again. A less than $30 expense is far better than $500 later! lol. Huge improvement in performance after I installed the new PCV valve.

I had a 2010 Honda Accord V6 bought new. The dealer recommended not changing the oil until 15% on the maintenance minder..about 7500 miles. After the first oil change, the engine burned 1qt oil every 1000 miles…which the dealer stated was “normal”. I put 150,000 miles on that car until 2023 with 140 quarts (total) added at gas fill-ups. I can’t believe I tolerated that BS for over 13 years.! The car was ultimately totaled in an accident.

I think the dealer just parrots what the Honda corporate tells them to. None of my other older Honda vehicles burn oil... just this 2013! Not sure why Honda calls this normal. Glad you no longer have this issue to deal with.

It's the low pressure oil rings on the pistons. That's the issue with Honda and Toyota engines in this age range. Toyota honoured their repairs for this issue. Honda didn't (and still haven't). Toyota engines 2015 onwards (generally) don't have the issue any longer

@@FlyBeee As crazy as this sounds....I was using Mobil 1 then switched to Walmart supertec and less oil loss with the Walmart brand! At my Honda dealership, I was advised by a mechanic yesterday to use Lucas Oil stabilizer for low viscosity oil and/or switch to 5W-20. He said to NOT go over the "20" or second number. Havn't tried these yet. I do have a catch can, but I don't catch the same amount as I lose. I do catch about 1/4 of a qt. between oil changes. I tried the PCV valve replacement and it did not make a difference. There was nothing wrong with the one I took out. One can test a PCV valve.

It is impressive that you are trying so many things to address this oil burn issue! How much oil is your Accord losing? @FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 4 жыл бұрын
This engine requires 0-20 full synthetic oil and thats what I've used so far until the problem showed up. Part of the issue is probably that I understood full synthetic oils to last 10K miles and this car's oil was changed at 7K so all was 'supposed' to be good. However, others have commented that they got better performances and no issues w/ oil consumption by changing oil much earlier, at under 5K mile interval. Perhaps there is some truth to whats been said elsewhere that in recent years car companies stretched their vehicle maintenance minder intervals to artificially show a lower cost of ownership and disregarded the fact it ends up damaging their vehicles. I now change full synthetic oil at about 4K miles.

If the pcv valve fixed the oil consumption issue but car still runs poorly with lower mpg. It’s probably because all the oil being burned is stuck around the invtake valves. Six months ago my 2017 Accord started to consume large amounts of oil, about a quart every 300 miles, and that's after not consuming oil since I purchased it from the dealer in 2017. Since I bought the car I did all scheduled maintenance at the dealer and the car was a a few weeks before the engine warranty expired. I took the car to the dealer and he said that the last time that the oil was changed at the dealership they did not tighten the oil filter and it leaked, the dealer did an oil change and the car does not consume oil anymore. Very strange since there were never oil spots on my driveway under the car

The 2020 model CRV and Accord are supposed to be free of this oil burn issue which affected many older models. There are a few class-action lawsuits on Honda working their way through the legal system. Search for it or review CarComplaintsDOTcom. Many Honda owners were caught off-guard with this issue because we didn't know something like this could happen to a Honda which is known for reliability (I have had many Honda vehicles and this is the only one with oil burn issue) As long as you know how to handle the oil burn issue you are good to go. Changing the PCV valve is a good preventative measure, so change every three to five years. Doing so may prevent costly leaks. If you're driving a 1.5L supercharged engine, change the oil every 3 to 5 thousand miles with full synthetic. Otherwise change your 2.4L non-supercharged engine oil every 5 to 7 thousand miles, or, every six months, whichever comes first. And finally: If you've a CVT transmission, change the fluid every 30 thousand miles. Even if the shop says they dont normally do it. And insists they use Honda's trany fluid only. Shops say they don't normally change transmission fluid for two reasons. 1) Vehicles without CVT aren't as dependent on tight change intervals. 2) Most people neglect preventative maintenance. Final note: Increasing the change frequency of either motor oil and transmission fluid can only be viewed as a good thing.

Bro if you’re good with 60k intervals 3x drain and refill no need to be consistently be doing it every 30k miles. Is it good to be doing it ever 20k? 10k? How about 5k cvt intervals? Just because it’s more frequent doesn’t make it smarter, useful and especially not practical
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 6 ай бұрын
@@eriks8382 It looks like you are referencing Transmission fluid change interval at 30K or 60K interval, and not the Engine oil burn issue. If I understood correctly ten on the topic of transmission fluid change, Honda says to 'replace' transmission fluid every 30K miles (non CVT) and 60K miles (CVT) interval. If replacing the fluid takes 3 drain and fills at 30K miles, then if we do 1-drain and fill every 10K miles it would achieve the same result and with the addnl benefit that new fluid won't 'shock' the transmission. Honda has had a long history of transmission problems so I lean towards being more cautious on transmission maintenance.

Yes, there is some truth to it. In most cases the oil burn issue starts after 50K miles - for my car it started after 90K miles. If the issue is not addressed it gets worse and causes more damage to vehicle that gets expensive to fix. Honda and Toyota make the best internal combustion engines in the world. However, if you failed to change the oil at the specified intervals or put the wrong kind of oil you will run the risk of damaging the seals in the valve seats and piston rings such as the main oil control ring. Even if your car takes 0w20 fully synthetic it doesn't mean that you will run the car past 5k miles or worse past 7 or 10k. That is a no no. Failure to change the oil on time will make the internal seals brittle and hard to the point where they fail to work as they should. Unless you have a severe oil leak in the oil pan or rear main seal, if you dont put fresh, clean oil don't be surprised you also start burning oil as your valve guide seals are done. I have seen this, I'm a mechanic.

You are taking best care of your CRV's engine by using full synthetic oil. Please know that the problem or solution is not with brand of oil but that Honda's 'Earth Dreams' engine has an oil consumption problem. My Accord and your CRV have this Earth Dreams engine ... so you are seeing the problem also. There is a class action lawsuit on Honda for the defective engine in CRV. ... just google it with these key words and you will find it. Honda is denying it. What to do in the meantime? Change PCV valve every 40K miles, Change oil frequently - like every 3K miles which ensures you don't run the engine dry. If you do the 7K oil & filter change at a shop, do the mid-cycle (3K interval) at home with just drain-fill of engine oil. Then the next oil & filter at a shop. Takes no more than 5-10 mins. Oh! that's a lot of money! :( Oil burn issue causes issues inside engine that get worse over time if not addressed, bad piston rings is one. How did your service shop determine the issue is with piston rings only? $2K is a lot of money (at least for me) and would at least consider other / cheaper options before spending $2K on repairs... things like replace spark plugs if not already done at 100K miles, replace PCV valve, use better oil, use Liqui Molly fuel system cleaner (amzn.to/3v4rzxS) and engine cleaner. Recently I used the Liqui Molly and was impressed with results after just 500 miles. You know your car's history, but I don't, so decide whichever option works best for you and you are comfortable with. Spending $2K to fix a 14 yr old car may not be cost effective so another option is to replace it. 2023 Accord is going to be fully redesigned which means 2012 Accord will be sold at discount this year to clear up space at dealer lots before end of year. Honda has annual clearance sale in July so perhaps it would be better to replace the car. Consider this angle before spending $2K. I hope this helps. Best regards

I purchased a used 17 Accord LX with a CVT transmission in March 2020 and the last owner only drove 12,201miles. After reading about these complaints I started to use Amsoil PI and upper cylinder gas additive to help keep the engine and the injectors clean and hopefully stop this from happening to me. I would recommend to use Honda HCF-2 transmission fluid vs. Amsoil. Honda makes its own transmissions and these have a history of issues (read: failures) however you can't go wrong with honda's own fluid. If you use Amsoil or others and have issues with Transmission, Honda will likely put it squarely on you.

Thanks for sharing the link! We are all trying to make the best choices and everyone decides based on the info they have. My thought process is that Amsoil wants to sell its products and would want to assure its customers. We are missing the imp info that how well Amsoil's assurances have worked when customers had real issues with Honda transmissions. What I know is that Accord owners manual says to use Honda parts only, and also read online reviews (on CarCompaintsDOTcom) from people who've had transmission issues / failures on Honda vehicles that they did not have an easy time to get Honda to pay even a portion of repair / replacement for vehicles maintained at Honda dealers only with OEM parts/fluids. These customers reported that they felt Honda was looking to find reasons to get out from taking responsibility of their failed transmission. I am guessing Honda is likely going to find non Honda transmission fluid an easy reason to deny liability. Price difference between Amsoil and Honda fluid is negligible so why risk issues down the road? and Why give Honda an easy reason to deny liability if you end up with transmission issues. ... What I've shared here is just my thinking only. I know that everyone is free to decide for themselves what they would like and feel comfortable with.

@@hondafan2226 Yes, the accord has been very reliable, and by that I mean no unexpected failures, leaks or check engine light, starts as expected and never left me stranded, and never failed emissions insspection. I get 33 MPG from everyday driving on lowest fuel grade so it has been very economical as well. But it needs to be maintained based on Honda's old maintenance schedule = Engine oil changed every 3500 miles, one Transmission fluid drain-&-fill every 15K miles, brake fluid change 30K miles or 3 yrs. Only new items is this PCV valve change ($35) + be ready to change starter around 60K miles ($60-used part). If you have had Honda's then these maintenance items are nothing new for you. But if your expectation is that car won't need any maintenance and you run it like that then the car would leave you stranded one day. Please review my playlist 'Accord 2013 - 2017' and it should give you an idea of maintenance this car needed up until 126K. Questions are welcome!

@@FlyBeee my 2014 honda accord sport 115k miles pretty much did all that. I changed the PVC, transmission, and engine oil normally, air filters, spark plugs, and the dang starter which is a tough one for me. Then like you said maybe because burn oil is deposited in the catalytic converters and got a p0420 code so I followed Scotty Kilmer's video and pour Lacquer Thinner like a gallon and 1 quart and the code is gone for now. Now I have an overheating issue, Im not sure if is caused by the lacquer thinner but then I checked that I was low on coolant so added coolant but overheating issue continues. Now Im stuck on debating whether it is the head gasket problem which I haven't bought a kit to check yet but my honda is the same issue with oil leaking out like yours in the video so I probably have to change the Valve Cover Gasket. I don't have white smoke that I know of yet and I just changed the engine oil and no sign of mixed coolant with the engine oil. I was debating to pour bars leak to the radiator since I see a small crack of the left bottom of the radiator but not sure if I have a head gasket problem. If I do have a head gasket problem then if I use the bars leak probably will seize my engine. I'm in a dilemma right now. If you can shine me some lights that would be greatly appreciated. Personally, my accord becomes sluggish after 12K miles and after 5K on engine oil and I have to press on more gas to make it go. Overall, MPG is a mix of different factors: Clean engine air filter (A dirty filter makes the vehicle use more gas), Fresh Transmission fluid and engine oil makes the accord fly on just a touch of accelerator and gives high mpg. I refill fuel/gas when the light comes on, don't go over 70 mph on freeways because the higher the RPM the more gas you burn. Also the summer mix of gas gives higher mpg vs winter. Right now in winter I am getting only 390-410 miles on tank of gas , some of the lower mpg is also because I got new set of tires with better traction. Anyhow, I hope this info helps. The pcv is not the root cause of oil consumption as all engines consume oil.the root problem is the same as it is on the 2008 model( I have an 08 and a 16 Accord), it's piston rings getting caked with carbon from prolonged oil usage. Yes the manufacturer says you can go 10,000 miles per oil change, but that doesn't mean you should. 2 things to do to preserve your engine performance/mpg. 1- Change your oil by 7,000(even the book says to not let it go past the 20% oil life interval. 2- put a catch can on the PCV line(and CCV line if really serious about it) to stop oil from building up in the intake runners/intake valves. GDI motors do not have the cleaning ability on the intake side of the motor that MPI do. There's no fuel cleaning the intake side while running since the fuel injects directly into the cylinder. I have. 2012 sonata that was full of carbon build up at 60,xxx miles. Put a catch can at the PCV line after having the head walnut blasted, and now at 130xxx it's still clean. Also gained MPG back since the flow is less restrictive after removing the carbon build up.

@@khalifashema Carbon is the natural product of all internal combustion engines. The gas (fuel) we use has cleaners to keep the piston and combustion area clean. To help your engine clean already deposited carbon, switch to a higher grade fuel from one of the well known companies like Shell, and do oil changes at 3500 mile interval. Over the counter special cleaners like 'seafoam' that can also help - see videos on how to use seafoam before buying it. And last option is to do a fuel system service also called 'Induction Service' at your vehicle service shop. There are risks involved in the last option because induction services can cause your catalytic converter to get blocked with lose carbon and you will then need to replace your cat converter... which is super expensive! There is even a class action lawsuit in GA court about this issue. Please read through comments here on things you can do to minimize the problem. Absolutely correct! I have had older model vehicles and none consumed oil, not a drop unless there was a leak.... and that's why was shocked and frustrated to learn that my newer model ride is built to consume oil :( and this problem gets worse if owners don't pay attention. I hope this video helps people become aware of the issue and also learn of things they can do to address it.

In description of the video I have details of my learning from this experience and 2 cents for anyone having the same issue. In summary, changing the PCV valve and oil changes at 3.5K miles resolved the oil burn issue for me. Try it out and see if this helps. For leaky seals, I had the valve adjustments and spark plug replacement done at Honda dealer and that includes replacing the seal so I didn't have to pay special just for the seal. Jan-Feb is slowest time at car service shops so it is perfect time to negotiate a best deal on any service like this. I hope this info helps. Ask any Qs if I can assist further. Best of luck.

Honda vehicles these days require more maintenance vs. those from past years. If you are getting a good deal on 2017 Accord SE then I would say go ahead. G T I have no changed the type of oil. Use what the cap says. If you don’t change your own oil (I don’t), the next time you get it changed, add the engine cleaner once you get to the shop and let it idle for 20-30 minutes. (Up the RPM’s to 1500 or so). Pull the car in to have the oil changed, add the engine additive, then add the gasoline additive. My mechanic charged me $200 for this service, now it cost me the 89 for oil change plus what I spend on the BG. www.ebay.com/itm/BG-44k-EPR-MOA-COMBO-KIT-The-3-Musketeer-Engine-Service-LOT-OF-3-KITS-3x/274144545586?vxp=mtr&item=274144545586&pageci=c51daaf3-5c9e-4ee8-a219-93734f8e9fb8&redirect=mobile

Told them what happened and THEY REPLACED THE SHORT BLOCK BASED ON A RECALL FOR THIS CAR AT NO COST TO ME with a new motor. they also used my extended warranty to replace the head. I can only talk about my own experience which is that changing PCV valve made huge improvement that continued even after 12K miles. It is not 100% improvement because engine still consumes oil somewhat, likely because it was already affected and this Earth Dreams engine is known to consume oil... so I've understood this would likely never go to 0% oil consumption (even though my 07 Accord has 0% oil consumption). From comments I've received from people who didn't have oil consumption issue they never relied on car's maintenance minder that asks for oil change at 7K mile, instead they changed it at 4K mile interval even when using full synthetic. I used to change oil at 7K miles on this Accord but now after the onset of oil consumption issue I change synthetic oil at 4K interval and also keep an eye on the level through dip stick. Oil level drops half centimetre on dip stick between oil changes but not the drastic drop to below 'Low' level mark on dip stick that I had before PCV valve change and which you see in this video. Car now has over 110K miles and I am okay with the solution I've found. Its is not perfect, but works for me. I hope this helps.

Would this issue cause a catalytic code?
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and excessive engine oil burn may lead to catalytic converter failure! If engine oil consumption stops after changing the PCV valve then run your car a few hundred miles and this may clear out / burn off any oil deposits in catalytic converter and the code may go away by itself. If you end up needing a new catalytic converter look into Magnaflow brand. I used it in my Acura TL and it worked awesome. I bought it directly from the vendor and had a local muffler shop install it for like $40. Good luck
