2004 Honda Accord with 220,000 miles on the old engine and the timing belt jumped several teeth. Bent a couple valves. We got a replacement engine for $500 out of a 2005 Accord. This video is for those with the automatic transmission although a lot of the steps apply to the manual as well.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6. It has 155k miles and it still drives like a dream. It has outlasted my wife's Ford Harley Davidson F-150, BMX X5, Cadillac SRX, and will probably out live her current GMC Terrain. I refuse to sell my Accord. I'm planning to buy a Honda Ridgeline next year along with a Honda Rebel 500 motorcycle. I can't stress how well made and reliable Honda vehicles are. I think my wife is finally coming around and is considering a Honda Pilot as her next SUV.

This video helped me a lot for pulling the J30A4 out of my 2003 Accord to replace the rear main oil seal. I put a quart of Lucas stop leak but it still was dripping on the exhaust pipe and the car smelled bad when stopped at signal lights, so I had to fix it. What I would like to see is a video for putting the engine back in, that was a major task and took a long time to get it lined up correctly. Make sure when reinstalling the motor to try and have a helper, if doing it alone lower slowly, keep an eye on the rear precat and make sure it doesn't get hung up on the drive axle. Install one heat shield bolt loosely and move around as need when lowering the engine back down. When the mtor is close to being back in you may need to use a jack on the bottom or the motor and tranny to help get both lined up with each other. It only takes a little lifting, maybe a inch or two. I found I needed to get the motor mounts done before I could bolt the intermediate shaft bracket back on. My recommendation is to go over everything that has to be done, look over everything beforehand and mark with paint pens on all the connections. For the DIY crowd that isn't a professional mechanic, do your prep work, create checklists following what this video mentions and be prepared for the unexpected, and take photos as you go along. And while you have the motor is out of the car, you might consider doing valve adjustments, replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals. Be careful with removing things like the electrical connections to the fuel injectors, they break very easily. My 03 Accord has 164K and I want to keep it for at least another 125K. For all those of us who don't work on cars everyday, make sure to take you time, keep everything organised, keep bolts with the components they fasten, clean up the parts you remove, be methodical with each task, be your own best friend for when you have to reassemble all the stuff you took apart. Enjoy! You just saved yourself about a grand in repair costs.

Sounds about right. I would also include changing the timing belt while you have the engine out of the car. While it can be done while the engine is in the car, it’s way easier to do it with the engine out. I have an 06 Accord with the 3.0 liter V6 with the automatic transmission and I did my timing belt back about a year ago and I did it with the engine in the car and it would’ve been so much easier with the engine out. It wasn’t too bad with the engine in the car. I absolutely would NOT recommend taking the engine out of the car to do a timing belt but rather just saying “if” it’s out then you might as well just go ahead and do it!!! I was an auto mechanic, by trade, for about 15-20 years and I just decided, one day, that I was done and made my mind up to just get out of the trade altogether. Believe me when I say, that my back let’s me know every day that I should have never started working on cars to begin with. But honestly, I loved doing it. I love trying to figure out why something is working or not working properly. You start by looking over everything and listening to what someone says is wrong or what the vehicle is doing and go from there and using different methods of tests and a process of elimination in order to narrow down an issue(s) and ultimately figure out what the problem is. I really enjoyed working on hot rods and/or custom cars especially when it came to the older cars with carburetors and very little, if any, electrical crap involved. By “electrical crap” I mean computers and sensors and not the battery and alternator and what not. All cars have to have some kind of electrical system. Now, don’t get me wrong, the newer cars, with computers and sensors, are usually easier to diagnose but just simply because you can hook it up to a OBDII scanner and it pretty much tells you what is wrong with the car by giving you codes. The newer cars can be easier to diagnose, but they aren’t always easier to work on and that’s just due to the very tight spaces and very little room to work on the majority of newer cars. Manufacturers are making stuff more and more compact and harder to work on so that you are forced to bring it back to the dealer for any service work. But yeah, bending over the hood and into the engine bay for years has took its toll on my lower back. I got out of the mechanic trade because of my back and I also got tired of coming home greasy and oily every single day, as well. And o top of that your hands stay stains with oil and grease. Plus, it’s a rather hot job as a lot of shops aren’t air conditioned. I never worked at a dealership, just auto repair places and the occasional used car lot when I first got started. I have been tinkering with cars since I was about 14 years old and started doing mechanic work when I got out of high school. I still do most of my own maintenance and repairs to my car, my wife’s car and my kids cars but that’s about it.

Removal: I was NOT able to remove the 3 nuts from the exhaust flange. Note to self… GET A BETTER TORCH. But if you look a few inches behind the exhaust flange you will find an exhaust hanger attached to the underside of the body. Remove those 2 - 12mm bolts and the exhaust pipe drops down about a foot and can then be moved out of the way to access the nasty intermediate shaft bracket and heat shield (CAUTION this may cause exhaust damage near the rear of the car,) Installation: I installed the engine with the coolant manifold (drivers’ side that attaches to both heads), I remember it being a bear to remove in the vehicle and assumed it would be just as difficult installing (this video shows it removed as the engine is being pulled). I also installed the rear pre cat on the engine (new gasket and torqued) before installation. (Can the rear pre cat be installed after the engine is installed? I’m not sure and I didn’t want to chance that). The tricky part is getting the heat shield, intermediate shaft bracket and rear pre cat installed correctly. This has to be done while the engine is being lowered. I lowered the engine until the top engine to tranny bolt holes were about 6 inches above the tranny. I crawled under the car as an assistant (my 17-year-old son) lowered and raise the engine until I got the puzzle correct. (I took a screenshot of this video at 12:36 to help guide me.) It helped to loosely attach the heat shield with one bolt (lower drivers side bolt) to the intermediate shaft bracket until the engine was lowered and in place. Once I got the engine in place and all engine to tranny bolts tightened (including the one behind the rear motor mount using the long extension trick through the wheel well.) I also installed all upper three motor mounts. I crawled under the car to tackle the intermediate shaft bracket. It’s a bear. Do yourself a favor and purchase a ratcheting metric combination wench set. The ratcheting wrench set can get to all but one bolt. Install the two shoulder bolts (14mm head) on the lower holes of the intermediate shaft bracket, and the regular bolt (14 MM head) on the top hole. The trick is to install both lower shoulder bolts into the mount then rotate the mount into place. Turn both shoulder bolts as far as you can by hand (in my case not far). The drivers side shoulder bolt had to be driven down a bit by using an open-ended wrench. After a point you can get your ratcheting side of the wrench in and drive it down… But don’t snug it yet. Now for the tough one, the lower passenger side shoulder bolt. I sat in the passenger’s side wheel well for about a half an hour turning that bugger a quarter turn at a time with the open-ended side of the wench. I never was able to use the ratcheting side. Before snugging that down I installed the upper (14 MM head) bolt into the bearing mount (easiest bolt of the three). I then torqued the three down and installed the heat shield and that bracket between the oil pan and the rear pre cat. (Thank goodness I put the heatshield in place before I dropped the engine the final few inches!) Once that was done, I swung the exhaust pipe back into place, attached it to the rear pre cat and then reattached the exhaust pipe hanger. Excellent Video! Thank you very much.

I'm no professional but if the timing belt busted then don't you have bent valves? It is an interference engine which means the valves use the same space and if not in time they will run into eachother right? Or does the single overhead cam prevent that?

What do you have to remove from an 2001 3.0 engine to install in an 99 accord?

I have a question for you. great video by the way. I bought a parts car for the transmission and I figure I would remove and sell the engine to make some money back. how would you keep the wire harness with the engine? does the fuse box have to come out?
@happywrenching
@happywrenching 8 жыл бұрын
+michael cintron You will need to disconnect the transmission side of the harness. No need to mess with the fuse box. Everything then converges into three separate sections of the harness which have quick disconnects.

+happywrenching so I don't have to mess with the wiring behind the dashboard? Because it all seems to be wrapped into one big wiring harness that I'm unable to separate without cutting wires

Why do I need to remove the 10mm bolts from the transmission?? I believe you said something like a torque converter.
@happywrenching
@happywrenching 7 жыл бұрын
Alvaro D - because you won't be able to remove the transmission from the engine without first removing those bolts. They attach the torque convert to the flexplate
