2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 8th & 9th Gen Honda Civic - R18 SOHC I-Vtec - DC Sports Header - Spec-D N1 Catback Exhaust System
In today's video, I will be installing A DC Sports Race Pipe (Header) made for the 8th & 9th Gen Honda Civic Non-Si models (DX, LX, and EX). When combined with the Spec-D Catback Exhaust, this combo is extremely loud!
One benefit of this modification is that the header improves exhaust flow by deleting the catalytic converter. On the flipside, deleting the catalytic converter means that my vehicle is no longer able to meet federal emissions standards and will not pass a smog check &/or state inspection. For this reason, that is why DC Sports states that this modification is intended for off-road use only.
Check out the links below for both the DC Sports Header (Race Pipe) and the tools I used in order to complete the installation. You'll definitely want to pick up an O2 Sensor socket that will fit the A/F ratio sensor for easy removal & installation.

Good to heat wrap it too. The 18r engine gets cracks in the block right behind the catalytic converter. So it’s good to delete it. You could put a high flow cat below. There is a nice area for that. The 8 th gen ex coupe is 500 lbs lighter than the si. Sedan. That’s why the track racers modify the 18r engine because the car corners better with less weight. I wouldn’t advise installing cat back exhaust unless you are going turbocharged. You will lose some low end power and torque. Better spent money is to buy a Skunk 2 cam than going with the exhaust. You will have a nice sleeper car. Exhaust systems are tuned to the engine. Although they may sound cool, unless it’s tuned to the engine, you will lose power. The stock Honda exhaust and header (especially heat wrapped) tends to scavenge burned fuel out of the cylinders by timing the exhaust pulses with the engine. In a boosted engine that doesn’t matter because air is being blown through the engine.

As long as you keep the Piping at 2.25 or 2.5" you will not loose power nor low end torque (having a high flow cat, a resonator and muffler). When you go full straight you will loose a bit of torque. You really loose it when you go 3"

Intake & exhaust mods are usually pretty fun to do first. A defouler can usually do the trick for the secondary o2 sensor. I've seen it done successfully on numerous occasions 😁 The only reason I have hondata is because the end goal will be to supercharge the R18, and I will need to tune the motor once that happens. Plus, it has a few cool features that I can add to the stock tune (like a rev limiter and launch control) 😁

do you think if i were to get a hondata for an automatic transmission, with a spec d exhaust and injen intake, do you think i will get around the same results as your car without the headers?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
I would think so, yes 👍. While the header does make the exhaust system less restricted, it's only going to free up a few horsepower & torque to the wheels (on an R18 engine). Just doing a catback exhaust and intake upgrade will make your Civic feel a bit more responsive. I have a Hondata Flashpro mainly as an investment for a future supercharger upgrade... and to set a launch limiter and rev limiter... and just so I can tinker around and learn how to tune the Civic 😁.

I have an 09 EX coupe. Was just wondering how the exhaust and header affected the engine long term. I have a skunk2 and am considering a header and intake w a tune. What’s your opinion?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 4 ай бұрын
Currently, to date, everything is still holding up strong. If you get a header, just know that your exhaust will naturally sound a bit more raspy (because you are removing restriction via the catalytic converter). Also, you will need a solution to avoid the secondary o2 sensor from throwing a code for the check engine light. A tune will definitely resolve the check engine light issue for the secondary o2 sensor (I use hondata to disable the secondary o2 sensor) and will help maximize your performance. I say go for it! But I may be biased... 🤣.

Hi i stumbled across your install video ... Did you replace bolts on the downpipe to catback? The wholes on the setup are smaller arent they? Also how did you bolt the 3 bolt flange side to the 2 bolt flange on the downpipe?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
The header came with all of the bolts needed for installation. All of the bolts & nuts were identical to the OEM hardware. The only stock part of my exhaust left to upgrade is the front pipe (the pipe that travels underneath the oil pan and connects the header to the catback exhaust). The stock front pipe 3-hole-flange has 3 studs pressed into it, and they are a bit short for the catback exhaust pipe flange, but there are enough threads on the studs to where you can still use them. I plan to retrofit a 9th gen civic Megan Racing front pipe here in the near future. It is NEXT-TO-IMPOSSIBLE to find any 8th gen civic aftermarket front pipes (with the exception of Weapon-R; they make a header that also includes a front pipe, but it's over $500 and I already have the DC Sports header 😁). I hope this info helps! 😁 👍

Hi sir i have some questions Did you tuned your car ? Have you heard that changing to catless headers on r18 engine may result in higher fuel consumption, hardet to reach topspeed and causing engine lag even after tune . What are your opinions on these, i would like to heard some of your opinions.
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
Hello 👋. I do have hondata flashpro, but I have not yet tuned the R18. I currently have a skunk2 camshaft waiting to be installed (in addition to a custom front exhaust pipe to complete my exhaust setup). I will be tuning the R18 after I install the remaining components. The end goal will be to add a supercharger. Deleting the catalytic converter can definitely affect fuel consumption since my setup no longer uses the secondary o2 sensor (I used hondata to disable it). As far as "engine lag" is concerned, deleting the cat can alter certain performance aspects of the engine, but mostly, it will improve performance overall. Removing a restrictive catalytic converter and replacing it with a less-restrictive header will benefit performance gains (especially once supercharged). Anytime you can let in more air and remove more exhaust gasses, you are improving engine performance. In the end, it's all about your particular setup. For my instance, this Civic is a daily driver that I use at autocross events. I don't really need top-end speeds, and instead, I prefer modifications that will net me more low-end torque. In the end, I haven't really experienced any major engine-lag issues from my modifications. And until I finally tune the R18, I can only speculate at this point in time. I hope this info is somewhat helpful 😁👍

Can you install the headers without the catback exhaust? If so, is it worth it? Also will the headers fit on a 2015 Honda Civic LX?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 9 ай бұрын
Yes, you can install the header without the catback exhaust (for example, you can install the header to connect to the factory exhaust). There are definitely some pros & cons to this modification. The header definitely helps to eliminate any exhaust flow restrictions created by the catalytic converter, which should allow you to make more power. On the flip side, it will make your exhaust sound really loud. In addition, deleting the catalytic converter will definitely cause some issues in passing a state inspection (which is why this mod states that it is for "off-road use only). Usually, this header for the R18 engine should be compatible for both 8th Gen & 9th Gen Civics (2006-2015). I hope this info helps! 😁👍

I'm having a hard time trying to find one that states it would be compatible with the 2014 civic. The 2006-2011 Megan Racing version should bolt up to your 2014. The only difference seems to be the placement of the secondary o2 sensor. Modification might be required to make it work. But there is also the chance that you may not need to modify anything. semotors.com/megan-racing-honda-civic-06-11-ex-lx-stainless-steel-headers-ssh-hc06e/ R18 headers are hard to find these days. Is there a way to add a converter along the down pipe or exhaust cause I wanna keep this part on but pass inspection. Gotta be some type of mod
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
Stock catalytic converters are typically located close to the engine because they need to be hot in order to work efficiently. The further away the catalytic converter is, the less efficient it becomes (as the exhaust gas temperatures begin to decrease drastically). If you installed an aftermarket catalytic converter further downstream on an exhaust system, you may find it hard to get the catalytic converter hot enough to do its job well enough to meet the vehicle's emission standards. You might be able to get away with a custom front pipe modification (that includes a cat and an o2 sensor bung after the cat), but I am unsure if it would "do the trick" or not...

You do not "need" hondata to use the header, but it is an option to use as far as managing the check engine light issues when deleting the catalytic converter. Another option is to use an o2 sensor de-fowler (the more affordable option). Technically, the DC Sports Race Pipe is not street-legal. That is why the company states that it is for off-road use only. You will not be able to pass a state inspection emissions / smog test if you delete the catalytic converter. I hope this info helps to answer your questions! 😁

The code / check engine light will keep coming back on. The only way to resolve this issue is to either disable the secondary o2 sensor with a tuner (like hondata flashpro) or to install an o2 sensor defouler (which will trick the sensor, keeping it from setting a code). 😁👍

does the R18 have real vtec?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 2 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Most traditional VTEC engines use VTEC to "change the camshaft settings" in order to increase power / performance in the upper RPM's... Now, while the R18 does have a "VTEC function," it is designed to improve fuel economy instead of performance. VTEC on the R18 "kicks in" only when you're cruising steady at a constant speed in the low-to-mid RPM's to improve your gas mileage. I hope this info helps 😁👍

Believe me, I would love to get an Si. At the time, though, I needed a vehicle asap, and this one happened to be available @ wholesale price... A lot of people look down on the R18 engine. It kind of reminds me of the 90's where the B-series was king and everyone looked down on the D-series. Fast forward 20+ years, and you can see a lot of D-series builds with crazy power. This is exactly what I intend to do with the R18. The goal is to supercharge the R18 to make a reliable 200-250 WHP as a daily driver / autocross / track car. The next power modification I will be installing (in December) its the skunk2 camshaft. I will also be finalizing my exhaust modifications so that I will have 2.25" ID exhaust system all the way from the cylinder head to the exhaust tip (stock exhaust ID is 1.75"). I plan on finishing a whole bunch of content within the next couple of weeks. Lots of upgrade info to share 😁👍.

@LevelUpMechanics

The cold air intake is definitely an option, but it puts the air filter close to the ground... if you drive through water, you could potentially run the risk of hydrolocking your engine. This is why I chose the short ram intake as opposed to cold air. The Spec-D exhaust is okay for a budget exhaust system, but it can be a bit raspy without the silencer. If you want an option that has less rasp and a deep tone, I would recommend spending slightly more on the yonaka catback exhaust. I hope this info helps! 😁

Yes, it's normal. Your exhaust will smell more like a "racecar." The catalytic converter is no longer there to convert the car's exhaust gasses, such as carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and hydrocarbons, into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide and water vapour by means of chemical reactions. The header should have a donut gasket at the bottom (between the header and the front exhaust pipe). The spring bolts have a "flat lip" halfway down the bolt. Is it bad to put it in D3 it backfires a lot when going like 50
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
No, you should be fine. What you're experiencing is most likely just a change in exhaust pressure (and not a true "backfire" condition). Usually, exhaust popping is actually from lack of back pressure when the throttle is closed. Performance exhausts normally are more free-flowing and promote less back pressure for more top-end power. Engine exhaust gases actually pulse into the whole exhaust (called exhaust resonance). When going full throttle, exhaust gases are flowing/pulsing really fast, and when there's a change in throttle, the exhaust flow/pulse is dramatically reduced. When this happens, the slow pulses collide with the fast pulses in the latter part of the exhaust, causing a popping sound.

@@LevelUpMechanics So I installed this but I have an exhaust leak where the donut gasket is. Any fix to this? It looks like there’s a noticeable gap between the DC sports header and the midpipe where you install the spring-loaded screws
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
Did you use the oem donut gasket or the DCSports donut gasket? Also, you should make sure that the spring bolts are installed correctly... The spring bolt is comprised of 2 pieces... the bolt itself, and the spring. The bolt has a lip on it, located by the threads, and then a smooth extension leading up to the bolt "head". The lip of this bolt needs to go through the midpipe flange and sit flush against the header flange. The spring needs to press against both the bolt head and the midpipe flange. I noticed that when I first tried to install these spring bolts, the lip of the bolt was actually catching against the midpipe flange (instead of going through the midpipe flange and mating flush against the header flange). This caused a similar issue for me, and it can create an exhaust leak as a result. It was kind of a pain in the butt to get the spring bolts lined up correctly... and this might be the problem you're experiencing...

In my opinion, that makes this build a little more unique than everyone else's k-swaps and k-series builds. I am doing things on this car sort of as a practice run, if you want to call it that. I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and gaining experience in areas that I normally don't do that often (like body modifications, headliner restorations, paint, fabricating, etc). I am also spending time building up my skills as a driver at autocross events, and I plan to take this Civic to some track events in 2024. The next vehicle I have on this channel will definitely be of a "higher caliber"... but until then, I want to continue to hone in on my skills as a technician and see what I can do with something that isn't as popular. The check engine light will turn on with the DCSports header (which is why the company states that it is for "off-road use only"). However, you can avoid CEL issues with the secondary o2 sensor by using an o2 sensor defouler or a tuning solution (like Hondata Flashpro). I hope this info helps! 😁👍
