Great review Henry and Carfection team. Just sold my LE FK8 last week. After 7350 miles and putting 18's on it to soften the ride, it was completely bareable. Excellent car and will go down in history as one of the best Civic Type R's/hot hatches with resale value to boot. Only reason I sold it was because of this GR Corolla that Toyota keeps hinting. Although I am confident that it won't handle like the LE did, something about a Toyota that's AWD and is based on a Yaris GR which is a homologation special has me very excited!

Back in the mid 00's I had a group of friends that were big into cars, specifically Japanese cars since we're Australians and they're plentiful and cheap here. So among them had Nissan 300ZX, S13 Silvia, 180SX, R32 Skyline, S15 Silvia, Honda Legend, Toyota AE86, S2 RX7 FC, Mazda 929, etc. I had a new friend who was interested in cars and wanted to get into it and every single person tried to convince him to get an S15 with an SR20 and then spend $10k on upgrades to make a monster. Instead he bought a Honda Integra Type-R DC2. Everyone told him not to because it was FWD and only had a 1.8L engine. It was without a doubt the best purchase out of them all. Whilst they all spent years and thousands of dollars cobbling together upgrades he instead got a car he use an everyday, that revved to 9k, was reliable and could be taken to a track on weekends and actually survive and perform there with all of it's engine, suspension, etc upgrades already made by highly skilled Honda engineers in factory...

this is still a jumped up civic while the gr is a homologation special. I cannot believe how much money Honda is charging for one. I drove the FK2 and, while I loved the looks(both inside and outside), the whole car as a proposition was terribly.. bad!, R mode should have never been used/touched. Ok, this is softer but, uglier and much more common.. over 45k produced(while the fk2 was around 8k); if I'd ever want a type-r, it wouldn't be this one.. and for sure not at this price. One more aspect, Henry said he likes this... but he said the liked the A45 as well and the gti clubsport; in reality, neither of the 3 cars isn't that special.. ok, maybe the A45 but it is too heavy and too firm. On the other hand, he does not like a gr, which is so so much more special.. and special to drive.. but he likes the above 3 cars alot... yeah.. right.. nothing weird about that. FFS, the gr is like the second coming for small performance hatchbacks. Such a great little car.. and, if it wins in WRC this year, it will become a legend. This civic will become a 7k car in 10 years and a 3k car in 20. It is just a civic.

I don't have a lot of cash, but having a surprising amount of fun with 10th base Sedan 6MT (K20C2 engine). The rear is so forgiving, you can snap-out the rear end, before the apex and immediately plant the accelerator. Since the nose-end is already facing the right direction before the apex, it makes the need for rear drive or slip-differential redundant. What's crazy, it's easy to do (after EBC yellow stuff brake upgrade in the rear) on an otherwise all stock setup.

Dang! I'm jealous....going to miss the aggressive look of Type R or other 10th gen Honda Civic.

The color we know it as stateside is Phoenix yellow. And the new blue is Boost Blue, not Racing Blue.

The price and performance of the Type-R takes a dump on the A45s. Honda’s offering nails it on the head with what a hot hatch is meant to be imo

It’s time for Top Gear for Henry I think. Simply no better car reviewer out there.

I knew someone who ordered a new Audi RS4 in yellow. Normally the garage would take a £2,000 deposit off someone buying a car like that off them. Because it was yellow they demanded £8,000 apparently. And the garage still managed to mess up the extras he ordered with the car.

how do you change the vehichle settings; tyre pressure monitors, auto blip, etc without the screen? its annoying enough to do with it!

I do wish that Honda made it smaller sometimes... but it gets the job done :) . On mine, I have Spoon Springs, Whiteline Antilift Kit, Spoon Rigid Collars and 18 inch tires with 275 width tires all around... the grip is ridiculous. I would love to drive the Type R LE someday and compare it to mine on the track... unfortunate that the markups on the LE are completely insane.... I have seen some posts with dealers in the US that are asking over 83K USD for theirs... the nerve of them.

Better than a Golf R? I just drove a 2021 Golf R & it was insane.

Good review. I would be driving one, but the looks are to much for me. I feel the Huracan STO, looks cartoonish as well. Great performing cars though.

Great car...until you try to launch out a sharp bend, uphill in the rain. Then I'll stick with my Yaris thanks.

You mention that demand exceeds supply of these - that wouldn't be hard, given the only factory building them for the UK market, Swindon, has closed down, so supply has been zero since last summer. I don't think it's hard for Honda to follow up the FK8 - all they need do is repeat the exact same superlative dynamics, but in a less ugly wrapper, and they'll attract plenty of buyers I'm sure. On the colour, I'd love them to have done a deal with Eddie Jordan and called it Jordan Team Yellow or similar, to recall the old EK special edition.

Thanks for another great review. The pointy bits combined with the colour are still a bit much for me, but i suppose you can dress like a Wizard if you are one.

Looking at spy shots of the next Civic-R, it seems to be closely related to the FK8 but they've ironed the bodywork smooth. So if it is just tidied-up on the outside and iterated thoughtfully underneath then it should be another winner. Oh, and a solid-metal gearknob is all very purposeful and romantic but have you forgotten how untouchably hot they get in the summer?!
