As he says, the Megane RS was the pinnacle of analogue and no electronic trickery, proper feel driving hatch. Well not just hatch, anything. The direction we have gone and are going, we will never see anything like it again, get your hands on one now and tuck it away ! On a B road, there is NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING I say that can bring a driver more joy or that is quicker !

It's true both are great cars and have super car speed around tracks but also you can pop down to the shops in them or do the Ikea run, but out the two I went for the Civic GT

Both are lovely.. My favorite favorite hatch is still the type R.. What a gorgeous an amazing beast.. I'd really love to drive one around a track one day

Despite Civic being faster and more powerful, I would take the Megane. The Civic just doesn't make my spine tingle that much. I mean I love both cars, but if I had to choose, the Megane RS would be my winner. It sounds better (that hard cut limiter!!!), has better steering, is more playful and, in my eyes, prettier. But I would love to have a friend with a Civic Type R :)

The Megane is just the better car all round. The fact you could have bought one of kitted out 275bhp versions BRAND NEW for £6000 less than the Civic a year ago made it obviously the winner, and if you were dropping >£30k on a hatchback, why on earth would you spend it on a front wheel drive one??? You would have to be handicapped to not realise it was far too expensive.

you said the megane is from 2009 but the difference isn't that big as the type r is based on the civic from 2011/2012 and it's going out as well as they usually only make the type r at the end of the manufacturing of the model. personally I'd buy the honda but i wouldn't mind the renault either.

The Megane 3 RS is super reliable, cops in France had some with more than 400.000 km on it. Drove both and the Megane has a better chassis.

The Civic is nonsense on British roads. The Megane is just more adaptable, as well as easily had much, much cheaper if you buy from the right place. Seriously steep discounts can be had saving thousands, which you simply won't/can't get on the Honda. Which is why the Renault easily wins this if you're actually buying them. It is easily as good for ££££££ less. As for the Type R would I spend £30k+ on a front only drive hatchback that is more suited to the track than it is used everyday? On British roads? With a western European climate? Hell no. Focus RS, Golf R, BMW M135i etc all the way beyond that price tag. The Honda is far too expensive for what it is.

The problem once again with the Renault is its build quality. It might be cheaper initially but the amount of tow truck call outs will ad up and thats not taking into account your time costs. Check out the reviewers from "Dogs and Lemons." They give evidence on build quality not just information on who's stereo sounds better. Engine reliability of the Renault cannot be compared to the Civic

+Me Ean Reliability surveys the Honda comes out on top but the Renault is hardly badly built and scores rather well in the real world. If you go and buy a specced Type R it'll cost in the UK around £32,000 with no discounts. The Renault specced to the same standard from a broker can be had for as little as £25,000 and I'm not joking. Frankly the Honda is absurdly overpriced and out of it's league against similarly priced cars. There is no way anyone with any sense thinks the Type R is worth that much more than the Renault, and nobody should spend £32k on a front wheel drive Civic. For that you would be insane to turn down the Focus RS, the Golf R or even a BMW M135i. So much more car for the money.

You mention the Golf R. In my country everyone is aware of the problems with their DSG gear boxes failing. so much so they have a number of class actions against them. VW also tried to sue the journos who weren't ignoring this issue. Funny enough they weren't receiving advertising from VW either. Then we had the VW emissions scandal. Do you really want to put your money with this company?

Expertly spoken by somebody who's clearly not driven one. 2 years on, the Civic is extremely limited run, with less that 2250 units sold in the UK by the end of production, meaning future residuals are likely to hold their own, purely on rarity alone. Coupled with the fact that it's one of the best hot-hatches ever made, with the successor being a global platform produced for the entirety of the 10G Civic's life-span, I don't see it depreciating as much as the AWD alternatives or the Megane. As for nonsense on British roads? Horseshit. I use mine as a daily driver and it only becomes uncomfortable in +R mode (which is designed for the track anyway). You'll get 30mpg around town whilst having enough power to keep the chavs and their German whips at bay. Yeah- I wouldn't push it in the wet, but anybody with the mind set of AWD vehicles providing a free-pass to hooliganism in the winter months is a danger to other road users. Lets not forget, the Golf R has a horrendous, boggy DSG gear box, a similarly spec'd AMG A45 costs MORE than a nearly new GTR, the Audi RS3 is just shit and the Focus RS is a whole 200kg heavier. In the end of the day, the Megane RS is dated, the Golf GTI will be worth a 3rd of it's original value come the end of a PCP whilst the BMW M1 is probably the most boring 'hot' hatch ever produced. At the end of the day, there's nothing else like the FK2 Type R on the road. It's a hatch that draws as much attention as a supercar and it's not sorry for what it is. I like that, and that's why it'll be remembered in 15-20 years time, unlike all the German rivals. I've not met a person who's driven the CTR and not liked or appreciated it for what it can do. It's astonishing and it's a shame we probably won't see another like it for some time.

You can already buy a 2016 Civic Type R for about £24k or £8k less than list price that was definitely paid for it just 1 year ago. It's easy to get one for this sort of price, they haven't held their value that impressively and there are now plenty about despite the 'limited run.' However it's STILL difficult to get a 2016 Focus RS for much less than £30k! In other words, I'm ALREADY correct about the depreciation, the Civic Type R is depreciating fairly quickly as expected at least relative to the RS. If you bought the RS you have lost hardly anything on it (£2k), but you have lost £8k on the Honda in a year. Why? Probably because it was stupidly overpriced to start with. So unlucky there mateys lol. As for the British Roads, it's just not compliant with the sporty mode on. It's rubbish. And without that mode, the car isn't remotely as good to drive. Even without it on it still crashes quite heavily. If you drive it on the motorway all day and do little else then great, but who the heck does that with a hot hatch? It's not the point. The Golf R, BMW and Focus RS are such superior cars it's not even funny. Ok, so people wasted their money buying the Civic when there are so much better cars out there. That was their choice. The Megane is such a better car for so much less money, the ones at the cost of the Civic are ridiculously superior everyday propositions and they don't make the driver look like a 12 year old either. Honda failed miserably with the Type R like they have with the underwhelming NSX like they have with their F1 power units. The all conquering EP3 was a long time ago now, since then there hasn't been much reason to go near a Honda dealer unless you are over 60 that is.

The Megane RS, both 2 and 3, are great cars for the money. But their era has passed quite a while ago. The nostalgic reviews where megane is listed as favourite or makes its way in top3 or top5s are only misleading for the current hot hatch buyers. The typeR is probably better on dry than the focus RS and you're comparing it to the megane? Well, I don;t know...

Zanpa No, it's the outdated alignment which makes its handling a bit inefficient in some situations, it's the dull torque delivery across the entire rev range, it's the 5 seats 3 doors setup which is not compact hatchback practicality but some sort of coupe-ish thing, it's the renault master steering wheel, and a few other things which I'll remember once I get near by the car again.
