Thanks for posting this; I was curious about the behavior at empty. I haven't found any Honda literature on it.

I've been curious about this myself; thanks for the video. Also, the engine doesn't physically engage to the wheels at low speed so your not going to get much power from the direct generator to motor electrical coupling. Engine just has a single ratio planetary gear to the wheels which engages the clutch only over 45mph from what I've read. Primary drivetrain is electric motor.
@voodoo-rides2 жыл бұрын
Gas you put in won't register on gauge unless you have car "on" when your release the gas door. Don't understand why it does this but the gassing proceedure is spelled out in manual. I found this after doin same thing you did, I didn't understand why it didn't register. Looked in manual and also noticed after filling it correctely by manual after a couple on cycles went back to normal.
@CBTalon973 жыл бұрын
Interesting test so we know what happens. What you need to consider when you are driving on ONLY the gas engine is that the engine won't be powering the wheels at this point. The engine is only turning the smaller generator which in turn powers the drive motor. That's why the engine will rev up, but you won't see an awful lot of power.
@NatiYolieX3 жыл бұрын
That is not entirely true. Depending on the speed, the gas motor will either directly drive the wheels itself, or connect to the shaft of the electric motor to make it a generator. See link: www.reddit.com/r/Clarity/comments/bmkn06/honda_ecvt/?

@@NatiYolieX I'm aware of how it works, but it doesn't couple at low speeds as shown in the video.

Actually interesting...but in the way of a joke: I've been driving for about 65 years, and now my Honda Clarity will likely be my last car. Thing is, after being engineer educated, I've never left any of my gasoline (only) cars run out of fuel...just assumed they'd stop running. So am assured in my thinking by your test. :>)

As I understand it the battery regularly uses only 12 kw-hr out of the 17 kw-hr total capacity of the battery. This is to avoid extreme full charge and empty charge swings and therefore help with battery longevity. Probably not a big deal doing it once but you're doing what the Honda engineers engineered the car not to do.

I have been noticing the same that is good for the battery, I have learned recently that we should run gas engine on once a week to keep the 12v battery charged otherwise the agm battery can be dead and uunable to start the engine
@nathant57412 жыл бұрын
@@johnwang8799 Not sure about this for the 12V battery. I've gone months on end without running the engine. I think the 12V battery is maintained by other means. Might not even be an alternator. (Granted I don't do this often, good to have the oil flow to keep any o-rings and other seals healthy.)

@@johnwang8799 12v battery is charged by the high voltage batteries via a converter
@johnwang87992 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the information, so I can leave the Clarity in garage for a month without trickle charging when I am on vacation? But somehow my engine turns on even when big battery is fully charged, I thought it is for charging 12v. Your reply will be greatly appreciated
@Jusumoner12 жыл бұрын
@@johnwang8799 Complicated system starts the engine to purge the extra electricity when the car is fully charged and you are breaking/regenerating. Basically the generator drives the gas engine nor the high voltage battery would be damaged if the car tries to regenerate a fully charged cell. So to answer your question yes and no because the car need to be started to activate the convertor for the 12v battery to charge.

how much "louder" is it really when the engine/gas does kick in? I hear the Volt is quieter, but the volt is also a compact car. The clarity look like an amazing medium size car like the Accord or Toyota Camry. But when it switches to gas mode, is it really "that loud" as some people claim or is it really just a sound of an engine turned on lol. I like that you can force the engine on the highway like the Volt's "hold mode" does
@jonathancochran51342 жыл бұрын
I have a clarity and the engine does seem loud more so at slower speeds than at highway speeds, but it might be more noticeable because it is so quiet in full electric mode.
@franciscoortiz6980 Жыл бұрын
I guess you did this as an experiment ? Not sure why... if your gas gets below 30 %... stop and fill up. Why risk damaging battery? No batteries want to drop below about 20%
@alljerseystudiosnj3 жыл бұрын
Well, did the engine restart after filling the tank?
I'm going to agree with several people here and say as a one off experiment this is probably not going to do much, if any, long-term damage to the system. These cars are certainly over-engineered, but I would not push it. My Clarity Plug-in has just turned over 28k in less than 2 full years and I'm actually enjoying it more vs less and plan to keep it when the lease expires in a year. New tires kicked my a$$ at $1,100, but they will go 70k and then I'll turn it in for something else.

@brandonott72583 жыл бұрын
Yeah for a short period it dipped below then was started back up and brought back to hybrid range so I doubt it would have much of any damage. Now If it sat for a while that low, there would be more battery degradation for sure lol. Awesome test tho, I really enjoy seeing how something like this tolerates this as there’s always that chance that the gas motor can die from no gas or something else and it’s nice to know that the electric part is still propelling the car even tho the gas part has failed. Kinda wanna buy this car just from this test. Lol
