If you don't actually want to go off-roading, but still need everything else offered by a compact 4x4, then the Honda CR-V is an excellent choice. It offers a commanding driving position, and a real feeling of security in city traffic. Honda's legendary record for reliability means it won't let you down, and the company has also added all manner of safety equipment. The downside is that there are only five seats and the suspension can be little firm. Remember the CR-V is more of a road car than a traditional 4x4 with a comfortable set-up.

Love this car. My 2005 CRV is going at 301k miles. Only major replacement was a catalytic converter at 250k miles. Kept up on my scheduled maintenance and the car has been running like a champ. I take it to the snow, off-roading (nothing crazy), tow things, etc. This car is great - I'm so glad I bought it. Good review.

Unfortunately, the Freelander's base price is $ 7000 more than a CRV EX-L AWD with a whole stack of extras. So - yes, the Freelander would have a better finish. I would hope so. Unlike the Freelander though, Honda has one of the highest ratings for build quality and reliability.

Honda will be Honda. I bought this car and I can't fault it. Mine is a 2.2 cdti and the fuel consumption is not that bad. A car this size gives you between 42 to 44 mpg on long distance drive. The boot space is a plus. It is roomy. It can accomodate 1 keyboard sythesizer, 1 bass guitar with case and 1 acoustic but you can still close the boot cover. It has a folding shelf which is very handy. It does not have a 4x4 or 4x2 switch like the xtrail but when the vehicle skids, all wheels will automatically engage. Very smart looking SUV. Leg room at the back is plenty. A person over 6" wont have a problem. Front and back. Front seats have arm rest. And the gear is located just well below the middle dashboard which means that you have extra space to put thing in between. It is a 6 speed manual. All in all this car lives to its standards. And thats Honda.

Great car. Lots of room front and back for tall people, ample room in the boot for my large German Shepherd who's nearly 40kgs or numerous guitars and an amp, plus rear visibility is no problem with the reversing cam (on the ex version) which is very handy indeed. A very impressive and satisfying car to own

2:20 How many 4x4 owners go off-roading? Hardly any. The CRV is made for getting through snow covered streets. It's everything the normal motorist needs.

I’ll try to avoid it but over recent years seem to need to more often and got my A4 stuck on the school run. There have been many times I’ve had to make 15 mile detours because I knew my car wouldn’t cope. Hopefully now I’ve the CRV I won’t have to green lane it.

they always make one fatal mistake, when talking about the interior. They always call it hard, and plastic - however, they fail to realise, the hard material is NOT brittle, and will wear MUCH better than most. Plus, comparing it to a corsa? dont make me laugh, corsa interiors literally fall apart. Glovebox anyone?

I've had an 07 plate for a year now and its the best type of car in its class for me. I had to get rid of my trusty Frontera after me and a deer had a fall out so I got a BMW X3, what a crock of $hit. I took it back and got the CRV, all leather, 6 speed box, SatNav and all the rest of the toy's where as the X3 had nothing the CRV has it all and I keep finding new things on it (I never read the manual, cos I'm a bloke) My CRV averages 47 mpg but I have managed to get 52,mpg out of it. Its a great all-round car and when I'm done I will just get another one. I don't know when though as the original CRV's are still out there and still driving along

Petrol automatic all the way. As long as you flush the gearbox along with regular servicing it’ll give you no problems. Mine has clocked 166,000 miles and drives amazingly well. Always buy genuine Honda fluids.

I have had a 2011 diesel automatic for a year and find it is the easiest car to drive that I have ever owned. It is so car like to drive and a Freelander feels truck like compared to it. There is a bit too much wind and road noise at speed but not enough to put me off the car.I have two friends who have them and won't buy anything else.

Dtec are bullet proof however honda auto transmisdion not xo reliable, they have trouble with torque converters plus solenoid problems too, manual transmission is the way to go ( Im a big honda fsn BTW )

Them thick pillars in a honda is a roll cage plus air bags and its a honda,go and check out these things off reading in Poland and russia with road tyres. A freelander is no comparison to this.

speakers not playing sound check connector inside door to speaker rust on connector so you will lose a speaker or all of them watch video to take door card off its 4 screws and pull inside door off unclip 2 connectors 7mm nut to speaker and a small flat knife to unglue speaker from door frame . the 2 pin connector will be orange with rust a bit of a nightmare to pull apart but you can get apart clean up with a small file and hey presto sound. takes 30 mins per door as getting conector off te spesker is no easy feat. but door interior is easy anyone can do it.

@niveasunshine As an owner of an 02 CRV and an avid Honda fan, I would say there's some bad sides: the low fuel efficiency is most notable. The car is EPA rated 24MPG Hwy and, frankly, you'll be fighting to get that -- I drive like a freaking old man and I typically get 26-28MPG. Plus, it's also hard as fuck to accelerate up a steep hill from a low speed because the acceleration pedal is too soft. You have to slam it all the way down to the floor just to get the car to actually accelerate!
