This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Honda CR-V hybrid with the recent Kia Sportage Hybrid compact SUVs. The CR-V has a 2L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with Honda’s new 4th generation hybrid system featuring a pair of electric motors. It’s matched to an ECVT and has a combined 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options are available in the US. You get about 835 km/519 miles to every fill.
The Kia Sportage hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options in the US. You get about 838 km/521 miles to every fill.
The CR-V is almost an inch longer than the Sportage. For interior space, they are very similar in size offering about the same front and second row legroom along with cargo space behind the second row. Overall cargo space goes to the CR-V offering 76.5 cubic feet of space, the Kia has 73.7 cubic feet.
The Sportage gets better fuel economy at 6.1L/100 km, 38 MPG city and 6.3L/100 km, 38 MPG highway. The Honda 6L/100 km, 40 MPG city and 6.9L/100 km, 34 MPG highway.
Both offer a different exterior style, the CR-V is clean and simple, the Sportage futuristic. Interiors are also very unique, the Kia is modern with a dual panoramic curved display connecting two screens, the CR-V offers more of a minimalistic design.
Top trim to top trim, the Sportage has more features with a lower price point including, ventilated fronts seats, a 360-camera and a panoramic sunroof, all features the CR-V does not have available. The CR-V hybrid does have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the Sportage wired on the larger touchscreen, wireless for the smaller screen.
With only one trim available in Canada, the CR-V hybrid starts at $48,890 CAD. In the US, Sport FWD $32,450 USD, AWD $33,950 USD and Sport Touring $38,600 USD.
The Sportage hybrid starts at $36,995 CAD and the top trim $42,295 CAD. In the US, LX FWD $27,290 USD, AWD $29,090 USD, EX $30,990 USD and SX Prestige $36,190 USD.

@@UmmahanTaylor you are the exception, not the overall consensus. How about that before throwing passive aggressive attack? I have Hyundai ioniq too, it is Kia niro basically and it is quite dependable. Doesn't mean crap when all others reported reliability issues. We USED TO be CRV fans, but the last one we bought, a 2015 EX, went through batteries like crazy - about one every year. No explanation as to why (like no shorts or obvious electrical problems). It also started using oil, even though it only had 82,000 miles on it. Starter went out on it, and after having it replaced, it started acting up again. So, this time, we are trying the Kia, and a hybrid at that, which we never thought we would do. Love it so far.

The lack of features on the new 2023 CRV reminds me of the old Lily Tomlin routine: “We’re the phone company. We don’t care. We don’t have to.” It’s as if Honda believes their customer base is so loyal that they don’t have to compete with basic features that are now standard on many other cars.

As a 78-year-old, I am attracted to the technology of the KIA to help avoid problems on the road and in the parking lot. The adaptive cruise control that includes keeping the KIA in its lane and keeping it a specific distance from the car in front will, I believe, make the driving experience much less stressful and much safer. The 360-degree view of everything around when parking and when backing out of a parking space is also very attractive to an old man. I suggest you mention these benefits for people my age and beyond.

My lease on the 2020 Lincoln Corsair is up in 5 months, so I'm starting to check out what to get next. The Kia Sportage pretty much seems to be the current stand-out in small SUVs. I drove Hondas for about 40 years, but Honda is falling behind in design, tech, and pricing is way too high for what one gets. Of course, in August of 2022, when I have to turn in my Corsair, inventory is going to be the most important factor. Thanks, Edmunds, for an informative comparison.

I have a CRV - old, ton of miles. I LOVE it and it has been a great car. We bought a Kia Telluride, SX Prestige for my wife 2 years ago. I LOVE that car too. Compared to other makes with similar features and amenities, it was a great value. And...compared to similar cars in the same price range, it blew them away with performance and features (not to mention looks). So...as somebody who loves both Honda and Kia AND who is in the market right now for a new car (replacement for my CRV), I can say that these two are the finalists on my list...and I looked at just about every other option in this category (Rav4, CX-50, CX-5, Rogue and so on). From all of the reviews I have watched, to everything I have seen and heard, these are the best two options in this class. And for me, I have to give the nod to Kia. They are both great cars, but the Kia just takes everything one step further. Much better looks/styling, better mileage, more power, quieter, more towing capability....all at a better price. Now granted, you can't find a Sportage Hybrid XS Prestige available and if you can, you have to pay at least $4K over MSRP. So the real price is probably about the same. I still lean toward the Kia. It's just a better looking car - inside and out.

Honda engineers need to innovate more and are falling behind Kia. I noticed Honda's recent trend to do away with the spare tire and it's a deal breaker for a lot of folks. We want to drive and travel with a peace of mind. Honda needs to include spare tires in the Accord and CRV hybrids, especially if they are asking ridiculously high prices for the vehicles.

What car doesn’t come with a spare? That’s absurd. Do you know how many times I’ve blown a tire? Sometimes it even happened on the freeway. Other times I had slow leaks and just swapped it out until I could get to a tire place. No spare tire just means one more additional cost you’ll have. Plus there’s no hidden compartment to store it.

Hi, I have been watching all your videos for a new hybrid SUV. I'm cross shopping (NX 350h, Venza, rav4, CRV, Sportage) and really like the new CR-V (and Venza) and wait time seem shorter than Toyota but my major concern is that it DOES NOT have a spare tire. Although the industry is going away from spare tire in my case this is a non-negotiable. The risk of being stranded on the highway with a toddler because of a flat tire does not sit well with me. I've been there with a flat tire (in mountains with no cell signal to a junction of 2 major US highways) and just seems so scary. I wonder if you think there will be a push back and KEEP spare tires on new vehicles.

We looked at and drove both the Kia Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige and the Honda Sport Touring Hybrid. We ended up buying the Kia. We found the Kia to be more refined and a better value. The Honda became noisy when stepping on the gas where the Kia seemed more seamless between gas and electric. We could not care at all about the Android car play. The ride on the Kia is very comfortable. We will be taking a long trip, Las Vegas to San Diego, in less than a week. We have had the car for less than a month so we really can't comment about the gas mileage. The main reason for choosing the hybrid over the non hybrid was the fact that the hybrid is so much better than the non hybrid; the improved gas mileage is just an added bonus. There are two minor annoyances with the Kia: the memory seats do not control the side mirrors and the fact the home link mirror do not come with the SX Prestige. A home link mirror can be easily added.

You have to look at how long you're keeping the car. The $3k savings actually may not translate into any savings when it's all said and done. For example, if you switch cars every 4 or so years: Kia $40k, CRV $43k, if both depreciate at 40% means Kia cost you $16k in depreciation, Honda cost you $17k, all else being equal. Now in the real world, Honda may depreciate less so it actually cost you less overall. Personally the $3k wouldn't stop me from buying the car I liked better, since it's a small overall percentage of total price and you have to live with this car for years.

Honda depreciation covers the higher initial cost. You will only lose 18% on the honda at 5 years and 44% at 10 years. Kia is 28% for 5 years and 52% at 10 years. So buying either one brand new, just from cost alone you will be better off buying the crv but used the kia has huge dips in depreciation at 2, 5 and 6 years old where it will be more avantageous to buy the kia if it is thoroughly inspected pre purchase

Just the video I was looking for. Test drove the CRV last week and the price doesn't bother me at all. no moonroof, no 360 camera, I guess currently they have a shortage on blind spot monitors as well...none of that bothers me. What bothered me was only having a 4 way power passenger seat on the top trim...and you can see in the video, the floor in the crv on the passenger side is very high. Not sure if this is something for the hybrid system or if it's the same way in the non hybrid, but I couldn't get my legs comfortable with the combination and lack of adjustability. It drove beautifully but I appreciate pointing out the differences in the hybrid system and the CVT trans because that's not something I realized cross shopping.

I've spent the last month watching videos, and many of them yours. I've been comparing all of this size suvs, and though I was really close to Rav4 I've just really been loving ever little thing I see on the Sport'age. The inside, the outside, the lights, the shape, the spacious cabin, the towing capacity, the quiet ride, the 5 year warranty... and the price. I just can't validate any other compact hybrid suv for 2024... and fyi, I'm not a young fellow, I'm 62 years old, and retired military. And as a mechanical/electrical engineering fellow from the Navy, I'm rather picky about the specs. lol

Excellent comparison review as usual. Thank you both. I am a previous Honda owner (Pilot) and, while I appreciate Honda, have always felt they were behind in technology with small screens and older safety technologies, and a bit rougher ride quality. I completely agree with your indication of higher reliability and resale value. On the other hand, Kia seems to nail the technology, has a bit softer ride, better pricing, much better warranty, and an edgy and interesting look. But, again as you mentioned, the reliability is improving but not up to Honda, and resale has a way to go. Honestly, because of the 5 year warranty, I think I would save some money and go with the Kia.

There is no law in Canada against selling above msrp. The law is that you have to advertise the product price clearly, so as long as full price is advertised it’s legal to charge whatever they want. I find Canadian dealers more shady in this regard as they try and hide markups with bogus fees, whereas in USA they simply call it what it is, markup.

I ordered a Sportage Hybrid in June of 2022. July of 2023 still no vehicle and no movement up the list for 2 months. Bought a ‘24 CRV Hybrid because it was available and not sold for over MSRP. Can’t get RAV’s and if you can dealers want $20K over MSRP. Choices are limited but there’s more to it than just feature vs price.

Just purchased a ‘24 crv hybrid sport awd versus the ‘23 Sportage EX; Honda wins in driver seat adjustability, steering feel, seat comfort and expected resale value down the road. Kia definitely wins the technology fight but I don’t trust the long term reliability. Pricing was within $3000 between the two but I suspect resale value of the Honda will make up a lot of that difference.

Andrea was right on bringing price on every review :-) . I was thinking the same after watching all your review on crv ( exl, crv and now the comparison with sportage):-). I am sure that is not big difference like Canada.

The Kia is the big winner of this comparison. Quietest, more powerful, better fuel economy, much more equipments, better waranty. Yes the resale value will be better for the CR-V but after 10 years, in 2033, will you get 13 000$ more for the Honda ? (+ 15 000$ with the financing.) I doubt. Make profit the difference and you will have the half of your next vehicule in your pockets at that time. Only finish fan of Honda will take the CR-V.

One difference that gets overlooked or ignored though is the quality and attitude of the respective dealer networks. Kia dealerships that I have shopped ( and also Hyundai) are very arrogant and almost predatory in their approach to customers. I think their cars are great but in the US it's a painful experience to even attempt to buy a Kia. They don't approach you with the idea of converting you to becoming a loyal customer for life. They simply want and even demand that you pay thousands of dollars over MSRP. Take it or leave it. Honda seems to be quite a bit more customer friendly.

I had a 2023 kia for only 7mths and I had to get rid of. There's a reason they give 5yrs, it's because they feel the need to, as i was wondering too but, came to realise after taking it back 6times for various issues from wireless charging system to engine control issues, it was just 1 after another. I just couldn't take it anymore so, for those looking for cost effectiveness, I was you 7 well now 8mths cause it's out my life for good. I'm never heading back to that lane again, i tried and i love the design both internal and external as well as the technology but, I'm looking out for my kids future, as I'm definitely hoping to give it to my daughter who's now 12yrs so she can drive her brother who's now 4yrs...5yrs she'll be 17 and our son will be 9. 2024 crv is a long haul vehicle that's why i switched and i love it 😀

I am a Honda fans. I think its a smart move by Honda, by giving Canadian a CR-V hybrid, finally and thankfully. Even if both Hyundai/Kia and Honda systems aren't as bomb proof as Toyota's legendary system. Although Sportage has a more attractive package, Honda has a far superior dealer network than Kia in province of B.C. That's despite some Honda dealers have so arrogant attitude because of its brand equity, In this case, I would pick the more understated CR-V package.

Wireless phone is nice, but it dramatically reduces charge time if one is using phone navigation which generally is far superior to the built in Navigation for most makes. I put a wireless dongle in my Outback but since I use Google nav most of the time, I usually plug the phone in. CR-V boasts more 5% more cargo space but the uneven surface/hump created by the rear seat backs decreases the usefulness for long items. Regarding reliability, Honda certainly has a better long term reputation. But the trend the past several years Honda's suggests that Honda's reliability is declining somewhat while Kia's reliability star is rising. The 2022 JD Power dependability study puts Kia at the top, and Honda below average; but I'm not sure how many years JD takes into consideration -- it may be short term, initial quality. Then there is the Kia warranty which is almost twice that of the Honda. I had multiple Honda' Civics from the 80s to 2011 with no issues what so ever. My 2019 Kia Niro PHEV with 18,000 miles has had a couple glitches but they were covered under warranty. If I were keeping my cars for more than 7 years or 50,000 miles, I suspect the Honda would prove less troublesome. My top priorities in a new car are utility, comfort, efficiency, & price. Looks are not high on my list. Both these rigs score well on all those accounts. Bottom line: both are great cars, but even if the price were the same, I would opt for the Kia.
