Depends on your primary purpose for the bike. FJR is sporty and pretty quick. I'd say pretty good for daily commutes and 300 mile days. My 2002 goldwing does the same although heavier. Don't rule out the GW in the handling dept, I've surprised afew sport bikes and I'm 64. I can load about 12 bags of groceries in the hard cases. Plus the GW is Uber reliable. In a nutshell, ride what u want. It's all good.

Both are outstanding bikes. Years ago I opted for the '14 Goldwing that I still ride, as my right shin kept hitting the fairing on the Yamaha. Still, there's a real good reason many folks do an iron button on a FJR.

I almost bought the Goldwing, after gave a thought of more labors involve in maintenance, not good to my opinion, I do like GW since it was the first time I kept watching and put my heart on it. But I must admit that FJR, comes out perfect in between. I like its power and feel so easy to ride in a very slow speed. Just picked it up 2 days ago. Love it, the 2023 model , cobalt blue. You are very good in giving your opinion.

@JS Project Wild thank you. I decided to buy a new one because I won't buy anything again new in the future. This is it. On in a life time. I ordered it and waited for 2 months to arrive from Japan. Built in Feb, 2023 and I received it on June 2nd. Very satisfied, good motorcycle with decent technology.

I have a ‘21 Goldwing DCT which is a totally different animal than the Goldwing you have. I also have a ‘17 FJR. I probably will not get rid of either, but if I had to choose I’d keep the Goldwing for the two up riding. I’ve ridden in all 48 lower states on the FJR and I love it, but my wife hates riding on the back. She sleeps on the Goldwing.

I did not realize the newer Wing is totally different than the previous gen. My 2005 is so much like my 1990 was except a little more power with the 1800. Guess I need to more closely study the reviews on the newest one. And yeah, passengers falling asleep and always banging helmets. Thanks for watching and commenting Doppler!

@@JSProjectWild 2018 was a total goldwing rewrite. They reduced size and weight, added many things Goldwingers were wanting, and destroyed some things such as storage and rear seat comfort. 2021 is the latest version where they fixed some of those screw ups. And, it’s an automatic which makes it really fun to switch back and forth between the FJR and the Goldwing.

Rode my 2012 Goldwing to the arctic circle, up to 19 hours in the saddle in total comfort, up to 120 mph GPS, factory heated grips were ok when not too cold, froze in Tok AK in June they were worthless, turned them off and put on my Warm Morning heated jacket an gloves. I asked the dealer to make sure the latest GPS software was loaded before I took the new wing north, had preloaded dealer network, couldn't find one dealer in Anchorage AK. Overall great bike. I totally loved the 2017 FJR1300 till they recalled it for bad 3 gear and gear shafts, had to pull and disasemble the new motor, another recall for front brake failure, sold fast, 6 months later got another recall can't remember what for, then another class action recall to rmap the ECU factory setting adding more power to 3rd gear, Yamaha dumbed it down knowing they were shipping new bikes with bad transmission. Never looked back.

Thanks for that comment Marty! Yeah, the 6-speed tranny issue is why I wanted the '15 or older 5 speed. There still seems to be many happy 2016 and newer FJR owners though. Honda has not been without major issues with the Wing---such as cracked frames through 2004 model years.

Loved the GL1800, super reliable and comfortable for cross country touring, comms and audio were superb. I do lots of day tTouring is comfortable enough with the FJR. I have upgraded the seat to a Laam and its very comfortable. If I were riding 2 up and touring alot, I'd keep the GW. Otherwise the FJR is the one for me. No issues with reliability with the FJR. It's sort of like either driving a Lincoln Continental or a Corvette. Pick your poison. Either way they are both great.

Riding the same year and color GL1800 as you. The prior owner installed a Baggershield two--piece windshield that converts into a half shield by flipping the top section. First mod was to install Baker air wings and hand wings to eliminate the buffering and allow for customizable air flows. To fix the speedometer issue, I use a Garmin to display GPS speed. Goldwing is the daily rider. Running both a Vmax 1200 and a VMAX 1700 for the need for speed.

I have owned both GW and FJR (actually 2 FJR's over the years) and both are outstanding and fully support local and touring rides. The GW is simply amazing, even with the additional weight. Hey thanks for that input 3Wheel! Just got back from riding the FJR about 40 miles this morning. Even with the bars risers 2 inches up and back I am still in a somewhat forward leaning position and with my helmet on I get neck pain (the sort of thing that I never had when I was younger😬). I have a 2015 Anniversary edition Goldwing. Excellent motorcycle. Before this bike I had two Honda ST1300s, an R90/6, a K75RT and some others. At 75 I find the Goldwing a lot to handle. I know I came to the GW because the seat height was so much better than the ST1300s I had been riding. I’ve known people with FJRs that had more than 200k miles so the bike’s ability to go the miles isn’t a question for either bike. I don’t hear well enough to use the radio on my GW. Obviously, if your wife is riding along you know how to keep her happy: hang onto the Honda. She could knit your yard a garrison-sized flag of the USA back there.

Had both, FJR and Goldwing. The FJR was an absolute thrill maker... gave you tingles when you rode it... unfortunately the ride position wasn't good for me, leaning forward slightly and looking up... 1800 Goldwing feels like a tank but performs like a sport bike... I am convinced that this is the best bike I've ever owned... and I've lost count at 22 bikes owned! Love the Goldwing... ALso have a Road King which is my forever bike but if I had to go and crunch some miles... it would be the Wing! Except for sex-appeal... the Goldwing checks all the other boxes!

Keep the FJR..... I own a 2013 and it's a great traveling machine. Not that the wing isn't but the wing may as well have four wheels on it. My 2013 FJR1300a I've put nearly 63,000 miles on and traveled through 21 states on it. I rode 952 miles in a day, and average over 400 miles a day on a long trip. Not bad for a 60 year old gear head. It's comfortable, fast, economical if you keep out of the throttle, and nimble for a big sport tourer. Add a top box and get a large roll top bag to strap to the pillion and you can do like me and stay gone for weeks at a time. I don't know, to me, the Wing ought to come with a chauffeur. I like to get on my FJR and pound some pavement, and I do without feeling like it beat me up.

Hello JS Project Wild, Im 32, 6ft2 , 330 lbs looking for an upgrade. And after 7 years of Vstrom 1000 02" i would pick FJR over the GoldWing because its sportier and more powerful, the radio problem can be sorted out with a cardo intercom or bluetooth in ear headphones that also will reduce wind noise. But I would pick the Concours 14/GTR1400 over the FJR because, i think the dash its better looking on C14, better wind protection, a VVT engine, rear suspension similar to BMW that reduces jack effect of shaft driven motorcycles, even though the FJR is lighter, bigger fuel tank, has cruise control, easier to do maintenance and dual exhaust like my Vstrom. Another strong option for me, its the Honda CrossTourer/VFR1200x with a delkevik full sistem and a tune, it can do @ 160 hp and @135 nm (100 ft lbs) and has the ability to go light off road. Both riding position (C14 and CT12) a very similar to my Vstrom, the C14 is just a tad leaned forward and the CT12 has the foot placement forward @ 2 inches max. Thank you for your thoughts and your videos. Ride safe.

It's like you read my mind making this video. I've had my 2015 FJR since, well, 2015. I'm 5''7" and the FJR sits a bit high. When I saw the new Goldwing I was awestruck as it no longer looks like a huge bagger but has some serious sport pedigree. My friends laughed when I told them I was considering it but I would have proceeded regardless. What stopped me? The idiotic decision Honda made offering the non-touring Goldwing only with the DCT automatic. Complete non-starter for me. Before I bought my 2015 FJR I owned one of the rare 2009 electric shift FJR's. Not saying it's bad, just not what I wanted. Honda should have given us a choice.

Love your reviews. I’m torn between buying a 2002 or later GW, Honda ST1300 or a 2012-2018 FJR. In my late 50s my back really needs an upright & comfortable riding position but bar risers worked on my Concours 14. Do you have any thoughts on the ST1300? Some say it has heat issues & a lot of my riding is in Florida. Would appreciate your opinion on the ST1300 if you have a few minutes. Also was close to pulling the trigger on the Harley Pan America but honestly I’m worried about the future costs of maintenance & how the bike will hold up over time.
@JSProjectWild
@JSProjectWild 4 ай бұрын
2002-2004 Wings had the cracked frame issues, you can research that. My neighbor had an ST1300 and really liked the bike but hated all the heat while riding, and that's in the North central US. I've owned a bunch of fairly expensive Harleys, (you can see a bunch of them on my channel) and now I own none and it will probably stay that way. Thanks much for watching and commenting!!! 🦾👍

@@JSProjectWild Thank you for your time & advice. Agree that I hear about the heat issue all the time from the ST1300. On top of the frame weld issues with the 2002-03 GWs it looks like Honda refined the cooling system by 2006-07. But I do have concerns about GW heat. Hate to say it but the coolest running bike o ever had was a Yamaha Star 1300. It was a cruiser trying to imitate Harley but the V-twin was effortless in traffic & had a great radiator. I think I’m going to have to ride a GW & a ST1300 to see if I can even handle the heat. Thanks again sir.

@@r.williamcomm7693 Six years ago I had a 2008 Royal Star Tour Deluxe with only 5000 miles and I adapted a pair of V&H monster Ovals from a Harley to fit it. Probably the best sounding bike I owned but I found it lacking power, it had 98 HP, I think. Actually, I found the 2024 FJR to be much less agile than my 2018 Goldwing. The Goldwing carries its weight much lower than the FJR. It is much easier to move my Goldwing off the side stand than the FJR. The FJR feels heavier than the Goldwing. I've owned 2 FJRs. The Goldwing is hands down easier to ride slow. I love the FJR, but it is ponderous lump compared to the 2018+ Goldwing.

It entirely depends on the type of riding you do. The FJR is sportier by far but for long distance two-up touring a Gold Wing can't be beat. I have a 2019 FJR1300 and for everyday use as well as long distance riding I considered it to be better for me - I've done a 2500+ mile tour with my wife on the FJR. Mine has the Yamaha Comfort seat but it is hard and I would change it before doing another long distance tour - I see yours has a Corbin seat so likely a lot more comfortable. For music I have a Cardo Packtalk Edge connected to my iPhone . . .hundreds of albums in a small package. I went with the FJR as in my opinion it is less of a "singular purpose" motorcycle and its a lot lighter than a Gold Wing and takes up less space in the garage.

Well I'm in the same boat. I have a vstar 1100 classic and 04 wing. Love both. I'm keeping vstar love my cruiser but wanting to try something different for touring. Little lighter and easier at parking lot speeds. Looking heavily at the fjr doing a lot of research. My question is because I can't find a fjr local to sit on I'm 5.9. Would I be able to flat foot the fjr. I can almost on the wing. My vstar that's a given. O I'm 65. Not a spring turkey.

I am 6.0 ft. and can just barely flatfoot my FJR and that's with the Corbin seat on it which supposedly is a hair lower than the stock seat in its lowest position. And FJR's are top heavy IMO. And BTW you're younger than me---but not by much, LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting!🦾

I agree ---- How many years did it take for Harley to get rid of their chassis wobble? I've got an old high school friend that's been riding a Harley for years. A full dresser. We did a trip together from Indiana to Sturgis and back. We swapped bikes coming back, and he rode my 2013 FJR1300a. He sold his Harley and ended up buying a new 2021 FJR1300es. No-- It's plain shameful what Harley charges for their bikes, and I've read testimony from people about the problems with Harley's new ADV bike. One guy said the dealer tried to make him believe he didn't know how to ride it, when his electrical system failed. His quit running and went dead black while riding through a tunnel in Colorado. He said I had enough speed to nearly coast out of the tunnel. when a person pays that much money for a machine it ought to perform like Michael Jordan on a basketball court.

If I had to choose between those two, the FJR would win. More bang for your buck. Easier to maintain, especially on the fly. And I think a more practical EDC. If extended, high mileage touring with a pillion, is more the norm for you? Then maybe, the GW wins!

The Honda Gold Wing is a motorcycle high standard machine. The year 2005 of the bike, wow it is almost 20 years old, does 25 years make it a classic? On the other hand, might be a good reason to let it go. 2005 is in another era now, LOL. I just purchased a 2023 Yamaha Super Tenere, I probably made a mistake and should have gone for a Harley. I am only rich enough to own one motorcycle at a time. I would keep the one with SHAFT drive. I am sick of chains; it is one of the big reasons I pick my bike. If they both have shaft drive, pick the one most different than your other bikes.
