@@MrInternFTL you just don't understand, yes it is a lump of metal and plastic etc, but the effort to make a fun driving car with a company letting their best group of engineers really make something that they want to make and put their heart and soul to it is rare. That's why the S2000 and a lot of other sports cars are not for everyone, but if you are a enthusiast some cars are more than just cars, even more if you don't have hundreds of thousands to put into a car.

after i bought mine, i discovered it had been thrashed and had to replace everything from the transmission back. honda australia charges like a wounded bull ($7,000 for a new diff!) and many parts are more complicated than you would expect (eg: suspension bushes are pre-fitted to the arms, so you need to replace an entire arm to fix one bad bush) i ended up spending as much fixing the car as i did buying it! lol but now that everything is sorted, it is a joy to drive :) side note: toda racing makes and excellent replacement timing chain tensioner.

The car had numerous previous owners not that well maintained and is at 222 000km, apart 1 litre every 1000 km everything else everything is absolutely fine. Of alll the other S2000 owners I know my one is the least good one. But it's still really fine. All the info you need is available, all the little problems are really well documented.

I own a 2001 AP1 and its just right for me. Top down with an aftermarket exhaust is just amazing (especially in tunnels). The drawbacks I'd give it as an owner are: noisy cabin (rattles and such). If you're above 6ft tall or a more heavier set person then you will have problems fitting inside. Power is limited but can still compete with the BRZ's and Miata's. Turbo or supercharger kits run from $6k-$10k depending if you do it yourself. Then there is the price; I got mine for $13k plus interest so $17K (four years ago) with high mileage (115k). The money they're going for now is insane and idc how low mileage it may be because the price points now are in territories of cars with much more to offer in terms of power, accessories, and warranties! So buy with that in mind... All in all I love it and drive it as much as possible, just you and the peddles (no traction controls here :))

Just driving from the office 5km into the city was always a hoot, especially with the top down. As long as it wasn't raining, the top went down! Just crank the heater to max and enjoy the sound 😀 I even put 1000km on it in one weekend road trip on winding country roads. Bloody brilliant car. I miss that car, and my mate.

Wonderful thing if you are very careful and have Pilot Sports on it plus know how to handle lsd. Much more room and seat lower than a Mx5. Latest mx5 passenger leg room is silly and who wants to look at the sunvisor. No comparison although they go well. Review also left out electric steering and fabulous minimalist speedo and rev graph. Modern suv cars with tachos..ha. lastly while the cam change at 6000 is magnificent and you just have to give it a bit into 3rd too (hullo officer) its very difficult to say you are enjoying 8000 rpm and down to 5k up to 7 etc through a proper 55kph 70 kph type 5 km of uphill corners. With a helmet on maybe but if you have any mechanical sympathy it feels wrong even though its ok. I had a JCW at same time and its hard to beat low rev turbo grunt plus forgiving handling. Got a ticket for unsafe passing in yellow top down s2000 as didnt change down to put 7000 up as would have frightened two old bowlers in Falcon....doh. Gearbox snick 2 to 3. Buzzy clutch be $5000 and need genuine. All above still trumped by that fabulous on to motorway run up to 9000 , up to 9000 up to. ...ooops brake!!!

About 4 years ago I looked at buying an S2000, but instead bought an MX-5 nb 2.5 sport and took it BBR in Brackley to have it turbo charged. Alomh with some suspension and brake upgrades I opted for the 2.5" stainless full exhaust system with sports cat. This lifted the car from 142 bhp to 251 bhp (similar to the S2000). It was an amazing car ! But, I never got the chance to compare it wit an S2000, and the suspension upgrades lowered the car making the sports cat scrape the drive on every entry & exit. Small issues really, but I couldn't help but think the stock S2000 wouldn't have these sacrifices attached to it. Also, whilst the boosted MX-5 is a toal blast, it lacked the style of the S2000. I sold it 2 years later, but here I am pondering another roadster......but which one.

I’m in the minority. I have a friend that has one. I respect the car and it’s a great piece of engineering. That said, I don’t track my cars and the lengths that one needs to go to to extract performance from an S2000 means that you gotta drive it like you stole it. I tire of that quite quickly. I own a gr86 and a boxster. Two totally different flavors but both make their power in ample amounts at midrange and then also reward you if you wind them out. It’s the first bit about the midrange that means that you don’t spend a majority of your time at redline. Good review and I appreciate that the narrator speaks to how one can appreciate the mechanical goodness of the s2000 when you’re not going fast. I too can see how that may hold appeal, but the torque deficit at most anything lower than 5-6k would be frustrating to me. Add to that - the engineering prowess of peak Honda can allow one to contemplate an older car with a hard past, but it’s still a machine. I am above average as it relates to my need for the car to work consistently……don’t need another headache in my life. Having said that, I’m sure I’ll change no hearts/minds. The s2000 has earned a legion of rabid fans. More power to them, I say.

Right. The F24 motor came to the USA with the AP2. Same HP, a smidgen more torque, and 8200 redline. I've not driven an F20 example, but mine has enough beans to be fun with 6k shifts, just before VTEC kicks in.

I had a 2000 S2000 for 4 years, 60K to70K ran it on RE003 Bridgestone and later on AP2 17" with RE003; I loved it in the Adelaide hills but disappointed with the lack of torque and need to rev it to 7-9K to really enjoy. Moved up to a stock MX5 NB SE Turbo which was lighter, turned in and handled better and had a more useable power band.....also on RE003 Tyres. Currently running in a 2022 BRZ which will outperform the S2000 and the MX5 SE. I also run a 5 Speed Manual MR2 Spyder with Tein Springs, 17" wheels extractors and 2" System which at 995KG is better fun to drive than both the S2000 and the MX5 SE and at a fraction of the price. Had an stock NA MR2 SW20 always nervous about loosing the rear; also a great MR2 AW11 with a modified exhaust, upgraded wheels and suspension, as much fun to drive as all others. Sorry to say but particularly at the asking prices the S2000 are simply overrated; if you are keen to buy then be aware of the "clutch buzz" in the earlier units (clutch springs were upgraded in 2001,also check all engine and diff mounts. If you are looking for real fun, amazing handling and performance look for an MX5 SE and upgrade the tune and exhaust etc; well under $30K.

This or a 1st gen 86/BRZ? 86/BRZ is slower but with an aftermarket header and a tune, I think they’d be pretty even. I’ve been following your videos for a while now, great work. Good luck with cracking 100K subscribers. 🤠👍

I had drive one 3-4 years ago. Looking to buy something for me. Absolutely beautiful car but slow. Believe is slow. I couldn't believe it. Of course here in aus they sell it on the roof and most of them are rubbish.relax a little bit with the jdm scene . Ok has some good cars before 20 years but relax with the prices.

If they’re even able to find one! It’s such a rare car that didn’t sell in large numbers when new - only a couple left on CarSales rn. Maybe the larger Astra convertible might be more popular but even then they’re hard to find and I doubt many would be able to even get one in the used market.

For all of the marvels that Honda's engineering department has dreamt up and put into production, equally incredible is just how quickly management has managed to take Honda from a premium car brand to something that barely rivals Nissan and Toyota on the scale of inspiration. The S 2000, The Integra, The Prelude and of course the NSX have all been sent to the grave, prematurely, In my opinion. Why? Honda were at the top of their game with these vehicles. And they sold well! Would I like an S2000? Yes, certainly, but at the prices that vendors are asking for them today, I'll take an MX 5 thanks. By the way, our family has had at least one Honda car in it for the last 37 years! Great cars but Honda no longer has any foresight.

Not through any fault of their own. Cars suck now. All brands. Blame regulations, not Honda .

My friend...we live in a diff world with diff regulations. We totally took our times for granted. The world as we knew it has collapsed. Automobile manufacturing has changed. Choose a size you want(with zero design inspiration)....pick your turbo engine tune(likely same exact engine across the board) and try to look past all the BS. I have an AP1 S2K and I'm pretty sure there will never be another like it so I'm planning to hold on as long as I can. 9K is an emotional and rare experience.

@@pbmcgme176 I get what you're saying but Honda's range has shrunk to something that fits on the back of a postage stamp. I was always critical of Honda for not having a commercial range when every other Japanese manufacturer had at least some offering. I forgave them on the basis that Honda filled a niche that the others didn't. They no longer fill those niches. I don't think that you can blame regulations for that. Cut and paste automotive platforms and engines are nothing new but Honda isn't even achieving that, anymore. Forgive the pun, but they've been asleep at the wheel for the best part of fifteen years with no sign of waking any time soon. It is as if they don't want to build cars at all. I'm a closet Honda fan. I wish no ill will on the brand. I'm just disappointed. I would have loved to have thrown my mid life crisis at a new S2000 (Mrs. permitting!) Maybe an Integra? But it's not going to be the case. Rest assured that I'm envious of your ownership of the S2000. For me, I'm going to have to be content with my old Civic and Mazda ute for a while yet.

The biggest argument for buying an S2000 now is the existence of the ND2 Miata. I have owned an AP1 (bought new) for 5 years and currently owns an ND2. The AP1 ownership experience was extraordinary in part due to its community during the early years. The ND2 is every bit as fun to drive as the AP1 albeit in different ways. Now if you could [hypothetically] buy a brand new S2000 for $30k'ish today, then it's a far more compelling dilemma. But a 20 year old S2000 at $50k against a brand new ND2 at $30k'ish, it's the latter for me by a big margin. The argument for the S2000 is nostalgia, which is priceless at an individual level.

Happy with my ND2. It took 20 years but the ND2 is finally as capable, less rpm but still 5.7s 0-60, 35+mpg, and 400lbs lighter at 2334lbs. Love the S2000 esp at 9000 rpm and on beautiful twisty roads but I drove it once in LA bumper to bumper traffic it wasn't too happy. Definitely test drive it in city traffic if it's going to be your only car. If you find a S2000 under $20k then go for it.
