That is a really great way to do this. It brings back memories of when my dad would make me tune up his 1970 Chevelle twice a year and change the oil every 1000 miles. The car lasted a long time and it was fun to do it with him when he was in his 70's and 80's. We had a chance to do the guy thing on a regular basis. Thanks for your vids, I enjoy them.

At 7:47 the light bulb is dimming not because the current is charging the condenser, but because the ignition coil is parallel with the condenser and the make-and-break ignition switch. When the switch is on( short circuit) the light build is directly across the battery, but when the switch is open, the resistance of the ignition coil is in series with the light bulb, so it dims.

Hey thank you so much for sharing the timing knowledge you have, I have three Hondas, monkey 50, CT70, and the hard to find "st90" which looks identical to the ct70. I had wondered how I was going to check the timing I figured for sure I'd have to use a ohm meter but thank goodness Honda made it super easy as you have taught me! Feels good when I learn stuff and that's a keeper there thank you again preciate you.

Good video that shows how thing are sometimes very easy. Sharpening is the most negleted aspect in a kitchen, a garage,a shop,etc. Once, I have sharpened my roto tiler blades, those having a 90 degrees curve. The area here is not sandy at all, when it has not rained for a while, soil is very very hard. I used a sanding paper (no100) over a thin rubber disc, on a small hand grinder (4.5 inch). Each blade had to be taken from the shaft. Very nice improvement, a lot less rock and roll.

The flywheel nut is Counter Clockwise. You will need to have the little uninstall tool to remove the flywheel. The uninstall tool threads in Counter clockwise(it is reverse thread)
@sixtyfiveford12 жыл бұрын
Heat is always your friend when removing stuck bolts. As far as the engine goes it is probably seized from rust. I would take out the plug and pour some oil into the cylinder. Let it sit for a day or so then use brute force to unstick it. You can pull it with another machine and put it into gear while rolling or try a socket on the flywheel.

Croil Works very well on stuck rings and pistons. I used to use it in seized up chainsaws quite often. Croil is expensive as hell, but it is the best penetrating oil you will ever find.

Tire pressure, air filter as well as how a person it seated will affect the top speed. Crouch down as if you were racing. This is good for a mph or two. The other possibility is you have low gears(chains sprockets). The front and rear can be changed out. I changed mine out to a lower gear as I do more offroad riding. It took away about 2 mph, but I think I can still hit 30-31mph. How many teeth do your sprockets have?

continued 2....... to find ethanol free fuel for all my small equipment. Ethanol attracts moisture at an alarming rate and the carbs and fuel systems on small equipment are relatively open to the atmosphere. They pull in a ton of moisture which corrodes, rust, and gums up everything. I repair a ton of new equipment because they let 10%ethanol fuel sit in it is for 6 months. This is just my 2 cents. If you feel better about premium in your equipment, use it. Thanks for the boat comment.
@grominwithrob13394 жыл бұрын
I am a small engine mechanic. I would easily say 90% of my work is because of Ethanol fuel. Premium won't help you. Look for recreational fuel!!! Often gas stations near lakes with have it because it's a must for boating. Recreational fuel should be used in all small engines, especially for storage over the winter months.

Then my bulb intensity change, less bright, and it looks like it's always dimmed...i dont get it, because of that, i am not able to see anywhere the bulb changes intensity as i turn the flywheel. . . @cod636675 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid. I’ve had trouble with my 1970. Ran great, sat for a while, adjusted float, ran, cleaned carb and jets because it was still running rough, ran for a bit and would die at high rpm, now won’t start at all - I’m sort of questioning what it could be. Have adjusted the carb to what was deemed correct. Just ordered a new spark plug because mine seemed poor but if the spark were shot, it wouldn’t run in the first place allowing it to die at high rpm..right? What else would you check? Are points and condensers this important? Not a motorcycle expert by any means.
@sixtyfiveford5 жыл бұрын
Points/condensor are going to supply the spark and power of spark. Cutting out at high rpm can be spark, carb and or valves needing adjustment.
@cod636675 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. I’ve pretty much went through the entire carb so I can’t imagine that’s still an issue. I’ll test out this new spark plug later this week and if still no luck, buy new points and condensers. I know these things are simple as hell, I’ve just never had any problems. Usually starts first kick with these things!

Hey man great vid. Really helped me time my ct70. Couple questions. I have no spark on my bike. However if I supplement voltage from the battery to the condensor I get a spark. This tells me the condensor, wiring, spark plug, and secondary coil is all functioning. I have also removed the points and bench tested them to confirm they are working and have reset the timing according to this video. Now all arrows point to the ignition coil under the flywheel. It tests within spec with a ohmmeter and is not shorted. Also when I disconnect the black wire and test it I do get ac voltage when I spin the flywheel by hand. Millivolts however...nothing substantial but it seems to be building a field and collapsing and its what I would expect just turning by hand. My question is can I test the output of that particular coil? what kind of voltage should I be seeing on the black wire while kicking over the engine to determine if this coil is in fact good or bad? Or am I looking too deep and missing an elementary step?
@sixtyfiveford9 жыл бұрын
+schmooot Your condenser could still be bad as it needs to hold a charge independent of a supplied voltage.
@schmooot9 жыл бұрын
+sixtyfiveford thanks. I had removed and crudely tested the condenser, it holds a charge and will discharge when I ground it
@sixtyfiveford9 жыл бұрын
You can't really test the output of the coil as I don't know anywhere that would have these specs and they should change based on engine rpm. Even a slight amount of contamination on the points can cause a no spark situation along with a weak condenser. It sounds like your problem lies with the coil but they're not the cheapest things so I would swap out the points and and condenser as routine maintenance and eliminate these as your culprit. I don know on Ebay you can pick up the entire stator coil(2 of them) plus the points and condeser for around $40.

Hello Sir, do you have any tips on points and condenser for em400 honda generator early 70s model? It doesn't have a typical fly wheel, it is an electronic ignition I guess. No spark, could replace the coil assy or just go all out and get new coil, condenser, and points. Thoughts, links?

The em400 was made from 1974-1980 and did have points and a condenser. There was a 1974-77 model(em400a ser 1000001-300000) and a 1977-80 model(em400K1A ser3000001 and up). The points get dirty and probably just need a cleaning. A fine sand paper will clean them right up and you'll be up and running. If you clean the points and you still don't get spark, the condensor is bad. If the condesor is 10+ years old, it is likely bad. You can test them with a specialty tester but these are so cheap it's not really worth it.

I would pull the spark plug and make sure you have good consistent spark every time you kick it over. I tried using the light bulb trick to see if that would work for me but i am not getting it to dim on the fire mark any suggestions?
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
First you have to be using a 6volt battery and 6volt bulb. The bulb is dimming because the condensor is charging up. If it's not dimming either the points aren't opening or the condesnor is shot.

@@sixtyfiveford I did get it running and now I am only getting 20lb of pressure from the piston. The bike ran for about a minute then shut off right away.

Does the 70 start with out the key ignition on. I have a 69 as 50.??
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
It won't. You need the ignition key on and the handle bar kill switch on as well.

Setting the points for a Cub 50 should be identical.

Couple questions, I attempted this on my ct70, using a voltmeter instead of a bulb, the voltage was not dropping no matter where I turned the flywheel? And I adjusted the points way out of whack now and the bike won't start...
@sixtyfiveford9 жыл бұрын
Nathan Catalano It needs the resistance of the light bulb.

continued..........Also they will operate no differently on Mid grade or Premium, they just wont burn/use all the fuels potential. Its kind of a misconception because who wouldn't pay a little extra to have there expensive equipment last longer by putting something "Premium" in it. Look at your engine manual and it probably states 87 octane minimum with no more than 10% ethanol fuels and no e85. Ethanol is the new oxygenizer and I hate it. I drive 30 miles out of my way ..........continued
@sixtyfiveford12 жыл бұрын
Wow that's a debate you could pull your hair out about. I have never seen a manual or small engine mfg say no Premium. Maybe he is thinking no E85 or Ethanol fuels. It wont hurt a small engine to run on premium nor will it make any difference to run it on regular gasoline. The compression ratio of the engine determines what minimum octane an engine will use. All these small engines have low compression ratios and operate just fine with regular fuel.......continued
