That wasn't the issue. It worked for Anakin because it had direct affect to what he became and to his end in the story, SW did something with that. But here they just built it up for nothing, no confrontation at the end between the King and Maleficent about their history they didn't even mention it, the current queen didn't get to know that Maleficent was actually his first love and how she would react AND she never asked him why he has such personal hate for Maleficent, nothing happened. They half assed it.

crissy the cat I don't think cursing Aurora as a baby at a party to get back at her father is caring for her and growing to love her as if she was her own daughter. That's one of the many stupid things about this film along with making Maleficent good when she's supposed to be evil. In the original Sleeping Beauty fairytale as well as the Disney film she cursed her simply because she wasn't invited to the party and felt insulted for not being invited because Maleficent was arrogant and egotistical and felt she was too important to not be invited. A woman so petty she cursed an innocent baby to die just because she didn't get invited to the party celebrating the baby's birth. That's how evil Maleficent is. There was none of the crappy tragic backstory from the Maleficent film in those versions. None of that Maleficent being in love with Stefan but he betrayed her and stole her wings so he could make his father think he'd killed her and inherit the throne bullshit. Trying to turn an evil character good by giving them a tragic backstory and sympathetic qualities they never had before is stupid.
@Talezassian
@Talezassian 8 жыл бұрын
+Xehanort10 This isn't really the backstory of the genuinely evil Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" - it's an Alternate Universe Maleficent, and you might be able to enjoy it if you can separate the two. I've never watched "Sleeping Beauty" and really quite like "Maleficent", but I can imagine that I wouldn't be able to do the same mental compartmentalisation if they made a similar movie about "Ursula", given how much I loved "The Little Mermaid"...
@Talezassian
@Talezassian 8 жыл бұрын
+crissy the cat It's a good point - and part of the power of "Frozen" in particular - that romantic love isn't all that it's necessarily cracked up to be, and it's really about how much people care about each other, even in that non-romantic sense. I thought that the scene in "Maleficent" where she wakes Aurora was magnificent.
@GlenDivo
@GlenDivo 9 жыл бұрын
The reason why I Love Frozen and Maleficent is simply this, they make more sense. Classic Disney presented to us a Black and White world where Maleficent was just evil and just wanted to punish the King and Queen. That makes no sense, there is no one in this world that is simply motivated to do pure evil. By making this unrelatable villain, who I loved, they gave us half the picture. These new films give us more. The truth is anyone can be good or evil. We are all motivated by different forces. Stefan was motivated by greed, Maleficent motivated by revenge. Her character was that more real. Anyone of us could be Maleficent or Elsa. The world has long moved past this simplistic idea of good and evil and a lot of persons commenting about holes in the plot, have you seen old Disney? These moves are far more critical. For example, Elsa's sister is repeatedly mocked for agreeing to marry a guy she just met. That is real! Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty... all these stories about girls who need men to save them from bitchy women are antiquated. The protagonist and antagonist can be within ourselves and we all have capacities for good and evil and our choices determine who we are and all our choices are the result of our experiences. But if an unrealistic and unrecognizable fairy tale is what you want. To each, his/her own.
@JoeMartinez18

Meh, I still think this movie is a little too feminist. I mean, one man caused to created the most evil witch ever,and only Aurora, a woman, makes that evil witch a nice witch and then she is the love of Aurora's life , not a man. So Aurora is lesbian, just as Maleficient? if so, great job
@Lucan47
@Lucan47 9 жыл бұрын
JoeMartinez18 Are you really that blind? Is romantic love the only love that you know? I'd say it's more of a mother/daughter love. And you're being also blinded by your own expectations. So if the man is the villain and the women help each other that's silly, but having a plain evil witch and a generic prince charming makes sense?
@JoeMartinez18
@JoeMartinez18 9 жыл бұрын
***** It's just what I expected. But a man made Malefica evil ( Malefica means evil aswell. lol). Well, anyway. If you like it, good. But I didn't like it and I think You should respect that or atleast don't care about it. Everyone has his/her own opinion ;P
@Lucan47
@Lucan47 9 жыл бұрын
JoeMartinez18 You can like it or dislike it, that's fine. I was just trying to show how you were having a somewhat narrowed view of the movie. That doesn't mean I think it's a masterpiece, no, it really has a lot of flaws, the biggest for me being the villain king not being fleshed out well.

I was never a fan of "Sleeping Beauty" as a kid, so the story from Maleficent's point of view was much more interesting, and I liked what they did with her. However, there were a lot of missed opportunities. Maleficent and the future dad of Aurora had a thing before he became king. Okay, good start. Aurora's dad cuts off Maleficent's wings. Holy shit, now THIS is gonna get good! I can't wait for the big confrontation-- Maleficent curses Aurora and that's it. What?! Come on, Disney, you can't have that kind of buildup and not have it lead to something! There's no acknowledgement of it at all! Maleficent never mentions their past love, the king never brings it up, hell, we don't even get a scene where the queen confronts her husband about why he hates Maleficent so much. Imagine if the queen knew of her husband's former actions, how he betrayed his "true love" to become king and start a new life. That'd be devastating and would add a whole other layer to the film.

+dosduros Disney doesn't always make their movies as purely fluffy, happy-go-lucky stories. That's especially true in a lot of their earlier pictures, like ""Pinocchio" and "Dumbo". And have you SEEN "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"? Yeah, they changed a lot of the elements from the Victor Hugo novel, but some of the stuff they did get away with putting in the film wasn't for kids. And good for them. Disney should be bold like that again. As someone who's always been an old soul, I loved "kids' films" that didn't talk down to their intended audiences.

I DON'T GET IT, PEOPLE!!! Why does everyone say that when Maleficent screamed when she lost her wings it referred that she was being raped? When I saw this, I just thought that she was down-right upset and shocked that she lost her wings: The totems of her might, happiness and freedom. How does rape fit in this picture?
@agirlhasn0name
@agirlhasn0name 9 жыл бұрын
I think one can view it as a metaphor for rape, but you're not wrong either...it is what it is. You chop off the wings of a winged creature, of COURSE she's going to be f***ing pissed and upset.

@ConorWilliams.
@ConorWilliams. 9 жыл бұрын
***** ............. original story is a metaphor for rape?.......... A girl gets cursed to die by an evil sourceress/mage/mistress of all evil because she wasn't invited to her birthday, the king burns all spinning wheels to prevent for curse to happen, she pricks her finger, falls asleep for 100 years because one of the birthday quest fairies managed to sooth the curse a little, some prince hears this story, goes to save and kiss her, she wakes up and they live happily ever after. ................Where does rape fit in THIS story? (Except of course you are talking about REAL original story where king rapes his daughter while she was asleep, she gives birth to two kids who sucked I-don't-remember-what from their mother's finger and she woke up. Yeah, then it's kinda disturbing. BUT, we are now talking about Maleficent film. Where does rape fit in that film if she JUST lost her wings? Ya know, got them chopped off like cutting cheese with a wire. They never said or hinted that Stephan raped her while she was still asleep when he cut them off.)
@ConorWilliams.
@ConorWilliams. 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeeeeah, that's still quite stretched and *REALLY* forced symbolism. I never saw that, not do I think my little sister saw it like that. Hell, my mother didn't even see it like that. We all just felt really sorry for her to lose her flight ability and being grounded to earth from then on. Kinda like you would feel sorry for a person who lost his/her ability to walk on his/her own.

First of all, I pretty sure that the right words should be "home wrecker". Second of all, there is no real evidences that Brad cheated on Jennifer with Angie while they were still married. Most importantly, Brad is the one who decided to leave. Marriage is between 2 people only, no 3rd person can wreck it if the people inside the marriage didn't allow it. Brad and Jennifer's marriage was doomed way before that, when he wanted kids and she didn't (there were an Oprah interview when each of them was asked about that, and that was their respond). It was a bit selfish of him, but it's his own happiness, if he's not willing to find it himself, nobody would find it for him. Marriage doesn't mean a damn thing now aday, if you are not happy just leave. Life is too short to get stuck with the wrong person. It's much better than tormented one another every single day for the rest of your life.

2:14 To be fair, Disney's original rendition of fairies is technically the fucked-up version. Original fairies and Fae weren't the sweet old aunties in the cartoon movie. Since Maleficent did a lot of callbacks to the old legends, I actually appreciated that the faeries didn't know how to handle a human child. That actually makes sense.

+JadeToniRitsa L Except the fact that Maleficent, who was the PERFECT rendition of a terrifying Unseele fairy in the original, is given HUMAN motivations, which is the exact opposite of how the Unseele were in the legends. They're supposed to be inscrutable and alien

I like to imagine the original Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent as seperate stories because I really liked Maleficent! If you just remove all context from her original depiction, she was such a complex , badass and amazing character on her own. I appreciate it just as much as the animated version.

Actually, Disney have already said that Scar was evil from the off. Mufasa was always the favourite son because Scar was always rude to his dad. Scar's original name was Taka. He got his Scar whilst plotting to kill Mufasa as a teenager by angering a Buffalo, but when he laughed the buffalo herd attacked him. He then stayed angry for the rest of his life and demanded to be called Scar.

Being someone who's childhood was Disney I think, for the first time ever, I'd have to say this rendition of Maleficent had more depth to it than the original and a much better story to teach children about the good the bad and the grey than the Disney portrayal of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale.

It was a cheap ripoff of wicked. I say boo to that. They should have just made a new story with a character like that. I agree with what you say, but I also say to just leave the classics be.
@BlueMaxx86

Gamelover254 Yea, it was totally banking off of Wicked, but it really, really had misandry abound. All men are evil and even the good ones (Prince Charming) are useless when it comes to the love (a trait considered only to be a feminine trait in the film). Also, she saves a male crow and keeps him in the form of a man so that her slaving mastery over him packs more of a punch. She has him fight her battles. He shows her nothing but loyalty, despite. It's a completely horrid lesson for kids and young girls specifically. Maleficent held no accountability for the chain of events that caused her to lose her wings and become bitter and evil. She took a stone back from a "thief" that meant nothing to her, but meant food and survival for the young boy. She tossed it away. The domino effect is clearly on her side of the table. Cursing the king's daughter for her sins, rather her fathers? Oh, but no, the patriarchy and men are blah frickin blah. The message in the movie is disturbing to say the least.
@ThatFellowOnline
@ThatFellowOnline 9 жыл бұрын
Punk Rock Penguin I completely disagree, showing a woman with 'masculine' traits in this fashion brings some equality to all of the stories and films where the inverse is the case. I also don't think it showed all men as bad. It showed loyalty that was freely given by the crow. It showed that people can make choices and in the future kings case it demonstrates that sometimes people who are greedy can show a little kindness (the throwing away of the ring) and the complex multidimensional aspects we have to our personalities with differing aspects and levels of good and bad, all be it a snippet.
@BlueMaxx86
@BlueMaxx86 9 жыл бұрын
Don't you find it odd that she chose a man's form for her crow more often than not. And notice I said her crow. She saved him, then expected an overzealous amount of loyalty, even with threats and admonishment to boot. And if anything, the film treated masculinity as the bane of humanity. It was her own doing, and she took it out on everyone else, even her fellow faeries. Not to mention that the director, writer and Jolie were very aware and pushing for the metaphor for rape when her character was drugged and her wings taken from her. It's a fuckin' kids movie. I mean, what the hell kind of high horse... And the hilarious irony is that this is a Bros. Grimm tale involving a Sleeping Beauty who is raped by Prince "Charming," but makes it all about her character being figuratively raped. *eyeroll* This isn't a take off of the Grimm tale or the Disney version, like they've been saying, it's a complete retelling of why she was bad, and why she was bad was because the evils of men, not her jealous rage, cursing an innocent child, to make her a victim in multiple ways. No, it's not her fault. Tis the evil of men, not women. No accountability. That's what feminism has come to nowadays, and seems to even be transparently pushing in the message of this insipid film.
@ThatFellowOnline
@ThatFellowOnline 9 жыл бұрын
Punk Rock Penguin If anything you've just supported what I was saying about people being complicated and sometimes people with one trait can do another. Especially under the circumstances where the removal of her wings doesn't seem to be too subtle a metaphor for what is essentially date-rape. To have something taken from us or done to us without our consent happens in a variety of situations in the metaphor is applicable across a broad reference-range. She expected no loyalty, he gave his loyalty freely and from what he said he rather liked being a crow. He only really is in human form to communicate with her and for ceremonies/where it's more useful etc. He could have left with no consequence at any time. It's a movie inspired-by like that space movie by Abbrams that was inspired by Star Trek. I also don't think your comments regarding feminism are very contextualised. The crow was a very kind a loyal MAN, who CHOSE to be subservient, because of his OWN moral code. He gave her a very mature and loving compassion as a close friend as well as someone who felt an obligation. I agree with some elements of your analysis but find you have chosen to ignore that which portrays the role of women in the movie in a good light to support your own argument which is somewhat anti-feminism but it feels like it's more due to lack of recognition of the complexity of what is happening in the relationships on screen.

This movie was just as terrible as I thought it was going to be. When the information started to come out, I told people "Watch, they're gonna ruin a villain who's awesomely full evil with a sob story like they always do now. It'll be "Oh, I'm not evil, I was just betrayed by someone I loved and then turned bad." And she'll be sympathetic." No one ever makes a villain who is just a villain anymore. It's always someone who either turns good or is close to turning good. They ruined most of the characters and made them so bland, skipped so much information with a ton of time lapses, and yet there still wasn't enough time for Maleficent's changes to make sense. Turned evil in a split-second, spreading fear everywhere, because the guy she loved betrayed her (Being the selfish bastard he randomly turned into during a time lapse), then as soon as she kills him she's back to being good, and everyone accepts it and loves her immediately.

I don't know why but I really loved the movie. Angelina's performance made the movie very effective. I almost cry when her wings were cut by her lover and how she felt sorry for cursing Aurora who is her only friend. The movie actually gave a reason (a valid one) to make a person (or a fairy) become bad. Maleficent had no reason to be bad in "The Sleeping Beauty" right? Unlike the step mother of Snow White who wanted to become the most beautiful or the step mother of Cinderella who wants her daughter to marry the prince. "Maleficent" explained a lot and it deserves a good comment. Some people hated it because it alters the original movie but all in all, it is a VERY good movie. It is the first movie of Disney that made me feel like crying (almost).

The trailer is funny and all and I like ScreenJunkies and the work they do, BUT I really loved maleficent. It was such an interesting movie full of very sentimental moments. And the ending was NOT gay at all, it just showed that motherly love is one thousand times stronger than love that can exist between a man and a woman. And I personally think that that is 100% true.
@ryro3839
@ryro3839 9 жыл бұрын
The main problem I had with it is it claimed to be her side of the story but instead they just told an entirely different story with no explanation as to how the original came to be. There is a huge difference between 'not the story you knew' as the movie claims and 'well we have an entirely different concept but lets slap some well known characters in so we can cash in' it's a lazy awful film. Pacing was bad, dialogue was bad and the attempt to make it 'dark and gritty' was childish at best and insulting at worst. Every character was underdeveloped including Malificent herself and that's largely to do with the inconsistency in her character and the world around her. So those are my problems with the movie not the whole 'a mother's love is the only true love' spiel

Maleficient was surprisingly really good. It mostly sucks for fans of Sleeping Beauty, which 90's Disney kids haven't seen. Honestly, I don't think honest trailers watched the film. Jolie was hardcore, the world-building was superb and the prelude to war was LOTR-worthy. The film gets tarnished by association with the recent 'dark sexy Disney' trend like Alice in Burtonland, Snow White with Twilight. Red Riding Seyfreid, Hansel and Gretal, etc.

Tim Tran I just said, Disney fuck up there own product. Also if they fuck up on this, they are most likely going to fuck up on that remake of Cinderella coming out.

Scott smith most likely. Alice in Wonderland, Oz Great and Powerful and Maleficent all received mixed reviews. but guess what? if you scan through the entire list of fairy tale reboots throughout the years, Disney's ones receive the highest critical praise. everything just stinks. and yes, they fucked up the movie. but they didnt fuck up their own product. Maleficent is 3rd highest grossing film of the year globally, and their merchandise sells like cakes.

"Love only exists between girls" I laughed so hard because it's true that if you think about it, this is what children might learn from those xD Nope, I'm just kidding. No kid would ever look so deeply into a story. I grew up with a story about a goat who had 3 babies and she left them at home to buy food, then a wolf came and ate the bodies of two of them, painted the walls with blood and put the heads on the window to wait for the goat. After that the goat and her last baby took revenge on the wolf by burning him alive. And nothing seemed weird until I was older. (It is considered to be a classic fairy tale of the literature of my country). And no I didn't grow up thinking revenge is the answer. Children just follow the story, they don't think "what's this supposed to mean?" unless you tell them to.

I honestly preferred this over the original. I believe evil is made not born so seeing why Maleficent had turned that way was very interesting. Also the way that Disney is now showing more that good and evil isn't just black and white, that it's more complicated then that makes the story more thoughtful and deep.

***** No. That's far from true. Things are never that black and white. You won't find anyone who picture themself as completly evil without them suffering from something. And that's what you need to remember; There is no objective evil and good.

No, but they have begun to examine ideas other than "Boy saves girl with True Love. Girl marries him." As somebody who loved Mulan much more than Sleeping Beauty, I think it's the right direction. But that's just me. This is probably the first Disney movie I can think of in which they really examined a parent's love for their child. Maybe I'm the minority, because I really liked the movie at least as much as the old Sleeping Beauty, but I like the direction. You'd have to watch it on your own to find out, but that's my opinion.

they are just breaking the stereotype of "prince saves princess" mentality people have... Actually, I prefer the Maleficent movie to the original one >.< Idk, things are explained much better in this one... I mean come on... maleficent cursing the princess because she was not invited to the b-day party?(in the original one) and true love at first sight? it's a bit lame... though the classic is really great too ^^

Keon31415 I agree that it's nice to see Disney move away from that old cliche... but truth be told they haven't used this cliche in about 15 years and have been actively mocking the cliche in their movies since Enchanted in 2007 to the point where it's becoming its own Disney cliche. Heck Maleficent uses the same twist on the "true love" aspect that Frozen did less than a year before. Point is I don't want Disney go back to the damsel in distress route, but I think Disney is taking too much time just saying "we're not old Disney".
