I love this movie/book because the teenagers are pretentious, like teenagers in real life. Hazel is a downer who looks up to this author, only to find out he's just as pretentious and full of it as she is. My only problem with this story (both movie and book) is I felt Augustus' flaws should have been more obvious.

After reading the book "Diary of Anne Frank," I think she honestly would have loved the idea of two people who were dealt a hard card in life finding love exactly where she did. She had her first kiss in that attic with Peter and was in hiding. Personally I think Anne would have thought it was beautiful

That scene was literally the only thing that REALLY FUCKING BUGGED me in the book. Never seen the movie tbh, but it's just so surreal. People kiss everywhere, why the hell would someone just randomly clap for that? It'd just make the whole thing hella awkward.
@redaurelia6252
@redaurelia6252 9 жыл бұрын
Margo Smith I read her book as well but I have to disagree. In my opinion that scene in the movie or chapter in the book was too much. Maybe she would like it but you can't know that and the fact that she died, after she was found there, is what makes it disrespectful...especially the clapping. It's like when Justin Biber wrote that Anne would probably be a belieber and everyone was shocked. It's not that she could not be...she could, but it's just so damn distasteful. When I went to concentration camp where my grandparents were all I did was cry and puke...so if anyone would be kissing I would probably just puke more.

"Depression is a side affect of dying" . . . that line really pissed me off seeing this movie, to the point were I didn't like any bit of the movie. I was going to say I've had depression, but no. I have depression. It never goes away. You can only mask and bury it in hopes it'll never resurface and reveal its self again. And hearing this say if you've got depression, you're just dying . . . yeah, that's sure going to make people with depression feel fucking terrific about themselves.
@nadiact-ie5hy

That's not actually what she meant. She meant that she was depressed because she was dying. John Green (the author) has depression too (as well as anxiety). He's actually spoken about it a lot. I hope your days get better, and the number of good days you have outnumber the bad days you have.

But you can say "nausea is a side effect of the flu". That means that if you have the flu, you will probably be nauseous. It doesn't mean that you automatically have the flu if you feel nauseous. So, she is saying if you are dying, you're probably gonna be depressed. She does not mean that if you are depressed you are dying. She said "depression is a side effect of dying", not "dying is a side effect of depression." Get it now?

I don't want to sound mean, and to be fair, I haven't read the entire book yet and I'm talking specifically about the book here, but is it me, or does Augustus seem way too enlightened, smart, articulate, understanding, and perfect to be a seventeen-year old male? I don't know, he just seems extremely unrealistic and too perfect. I read some of his dialogue, and it's like, "What teenage boy talks like this?" I understand that he's a Cancer survivor, and that probably has matured him in a number of ways, but he just seems like an idealized dreamboat written for teenage girls on Tumblir to swoon over; or an idealized caricature of what John Green wishes teenage boys acted like. He's chiseled and muscular, a star athlete and extremely buoyant and friendly to be around, but he's ALSO a bookworm, talking about philosophical platitudes and he always knows the right words to say. I mean, I can believe Hazel and the reasons she acts the way she does. Hazel seems very realistic. I don't want to sound like a jerk for saying this, because I know many people love this book and it has helped a lot of people and it was written for a heartfelt cause. But... this seems a bit painful. Teenagers do not act nor talk like this. Maybe some teenage girls do, but teenage boys are not this.... perfect. Just my thoughts.

Rakanadyo Then why is everyone praising the hell out of this, calling it the most original and inspired piece of literature in recent years? Honestly, it seems like "A Walk To Remember" but with the genders reversed. In fact, a lot of John Green's books seem to be Nicolas Sparks stories, but written for the nerdier crowd. Don't get me wrong, I love John Green. Vlogbrothers, Crash Course, and Mental Floss are my favorite things to watch on KZbin, but apparently, his books just aren't for me.

***** Man, lemme tell you. The thing is : it's all an act. He's not particularily smart (he actually says at the end that Hazel is much smarter than him) nor understanding (making that metaphor/joke with a cigarette to a girl with lung cancer that you absolutely don't know? Not very nice.). I think at the end he's just an okay guy, a little goof that loves his friends and Hazel. He gets a crush on Hazel, and eventually Hazel loves him back, and the book is written from her point of view so ofc it's gonna sound sometimes like he's perf. At the beginning, he's pretentious af and kinda annoying, so not much perf imo. And it's really at the end that it all falls : he's just a kid scared of dying. He pukes on himself and screams at Hazel... I found him very realistic and loved the fact that DESPITE WHAT EVERYONE SAYS, illness is NOT romantized in this book. A Walk to Remember is. But TFIOS, you get to see illness for real and not only a plot device.

What disappointed me about this movie was that I was told repeatedly how dark and depressing and raw it was. Nope, it was overly sentimental and maybe I wasn't attached enough to the characters to be shocked or sad that he died, I just went well yes, it's about cancer and it's a love story I'm sure one of them is going to die. Her constantly saying how much death/dying/cancer sucks didn't make it dark either because yeah, death/dying/cancer sucks.

Same here, I was really let down by this movie, but I don't hate it. I don't know why people think this movie is dark and depressing; it was just some average chick flick with Cancer slapped into it. Grave of the Fireflies, Dancer in the Dark, The Elephant Man, 12 Years a Slave, and Babel are dark and depressing movies.

I read the book and never thought it was dark and depressing. Thought it was funny and honest, but so many people focused on the wrong message of film and missed it.

Maidenmarmalade I just think the fans overreacted to the movie, thinking it's about as depressing as Schindler's List. But in reality, it was just a sappy love story with cancer blended into it. I think the book and the movie would've been better if it was just about Hazel struggling to come to terms with her disease, and accept the fact that she's dying. It would be a much deeper movie that an entire audience would relate to the most.

Anya in Buffy the Vampire Slayer once said 'People are weird, they all know that they're mortals, that they're gonna die someday but when it's happened they act as if it's a big surprise.' Same here folks, people die, no need to get overemotional.

I was literally talking about this with my class cuz one day of the month in religion class we go sit in a circle and just talk about a topic. So I started talking about this and everyone got uncomfortable and asked why I talk about such depressing things and I just kept saying it's the truth. These are the times when I hate people my age (I'm in 8th grade).

Holy crap. My friend actually tried to get me to see this movie. I mean, nothing against cancer, cancer patients, cancer survivors, cancer enthusiasts, romance enthusiasts, romantic cancer patients, romantic cancer enthusiasts, or pre-teen to teenage girls, but I don't think I'd need to sit through a movie to understand that tragic romance involving cancer sucks ass.

That was my life for the past year and a half sans the European vacation. Lost my wife of 5 years after being together for 10 years (11 years on the twelfth of this month) to Cancer. The treatments are the cause as well. Eat well. Exercise. Fucking live life. And stay positive. Life's fucked. One day, it's gone. But it does have some good moments peppered throughout. Stay well peeps.
