The lead writer of the show was always questioning the whole "pokemon battle" thing, and then he wrote this movie's script. The difference is supposed to be blurred and you're expected to be repulsed by these battles in the movie. It's not big but the element of the show questioning its own premise is actually there.

Yeah, it was the difference between an organised bout of sparring, and a no holds barred fight to the death. And on top of that, their abilities were suppressed, so it was just physical grappling and hitting until one or the other collapsed and died. There are a lot of things to criticise about this movie, but that's not one of them.

2:47 she says 'Pokemon aren't meant to fight, NOT like this.' They do fight but it's like the difference between boxing as a sport and just plain fighting. Sports have rules and like that, pokemon aren't supposed to kill each other in battle. In this one, MewTwo is encouraging them to fight to the death. Like if this was a regulated battle, it would've been stopped when one of the pokemon is already unable to fight. And didn't you guys see one Charizard bite the other's neck?

People seem to think the fighting issue here is hypocritical but think of it like this: Pokemon Battles under trainer's commands are like boxing matches, Pokemon fighting just for no reason whatsoever is pretty much a street fight.

I think the point was that Pokemon normally fight for fun or sport, like you said, but the fighting in the movie was to the death. They weren't using their moves. If the movie had a higher rating normal battles would be bloodless, but the fighting in movie would have had blood.

Honestly the original length movie I didn't see until like my first year at college. I never knew MewTwo was simply made as an experiment in cloning because the head scientist had lost his daughter and wanted to recreate her. Completely blew my mind cause it really gave the movie a much more effective somber mood throughout the run time.

I always thought of Pokemon battles more like a sport, and what Mewtwo was doing more like a war. And there is an entire episode dedicated to how Meowth learned to speak. He gave up learning payday. Not sure what the relationship between giving up an attack and speaking is but meh.

That's the correct way for them to fight.

@The Pikachu Brothers That's Warner Brothers fault I believe, not long ago I read somewhere they changed the dialogue in order to be more appropiate for western audiences. In the japanese version, Mew is not portrayed as a hero and instead wants to destroy all the clones created by mewtwo and mewtwo himself because they have no reason to exist. They changed the dialogue to make Mew a hero in the western release.
