It's not a reference; apparently Nintendo has officially stated that yes, Mario is their last name, which I agree, is the dumbest thing in the world. I'll understand the Italian stereotype (I mean, fair's fair, cause we do the same to Japan), but the laziness is actually astounding. I could have lived with a Mario Corelone or a Mario Brusetti, anything but having a your first name as your last. That's like naming your child James James or William Williams. EDIT: So it seems there's some confusion at Nintendo. I think the head of the company stated Mario was their last name, but the creator of the game has said it's not and they don't have one.

I could have sworn that, in the movie, Mario is Luigi's father. I'll confess that I used to enjoy watching this movie for how terribly bad it is. It's been years since I've seen it though. Ah the really cheesy goodness...speaking of which, wasn't there a running gag about ordering pizza? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong. There was so much more that could have been said about this film. Including how the people evolved from dinosaurs, so they made all these reptile references (even though dinosaurs evolved into birds, not reptiles).
