I know its two years old, but absolutely love your reviews man. I believe that you are sincere when you say you put 1000 rounds through a gun. I was practically salivating over this Ed Brown KC9. Was thinking about the Kobra carry, which I will have one day, but I think the KC9 will have to come first.

I was actually looking at the kobra carry as well in 45, however I feel like the KC9 is better for CCW in almost every way and at $1K less, hoping to get mine after Christmas 😂

It always bugs me when people say things like "a 9mm 1911 is blasphemy" because when he was designing it John Moses Browning started with a .38 (9mm) automatic cartridge. He only changed to the .45 caliber cartridge at the military's insistence...

Ed Brown makes the best looking 1911s in the world IMO. The ball end cuts on this model along with the zev commander are so nice, a more aggressive angle then standard ball end cut which give it a more modern look.

On duty I carried an issue Model 19 S&W 4". One day my supervisor said that he wanted to do some farm and ranch check. I remember not being happy about that because we were required to wear slacks and a sport coat or suit while chasing folks over hill and dale. He smiled and said the uniform will be slacks and a pull out shirt. 👍 It would have been tough to carry the Model 19 since it would print badly. My other option was to check out an air weight J frame .38 which would greatly restrict ammunition choice. Then, I remembered that my agency had sent me three guns for bullseye competition including a 1911 .45 that was not competition level. It would maybe group into 8-10" at 50 yards so I had a gunsmith remove the sights so I could experiment with point shooting that .45. Well, I stuffed it into my belt in what's called "Mexican Carry," and off we went. Of course, I didn't tell my supervisor what I was carrying. Well, we were productive in our non-regulation attire and as we neared the end of our two week detail Frank, my supervisor, said we were going to the range to test his carry ammunition. Turns out he was carrying Remington 95 grain JHP in his Model 12 S&W. When he was done with the test he looked at me and said, "Go ahead and do some shooting." I replied, "No, I'm good." He smiled and said,"What are you carrying?" I replied, "Just an issue weapon." (Well, it was.) He said, "Let's see it." I obliged him and when he saw the 1911 with no sights he exclaimed, "You were backing me up with no sights?! When I replied that I had been, but that there was no problem he demanded that I shoot at our plate machine at 25 yards. I drew and hit 6 plates with six shots. (You see, I had been shooting that plate machine with no sights for several weeks. 😉) He then said, "Ah...well, that works." You are now wondering what's with the long story? The reason is to demonstrate just how well a 1911 can perform without sights. It takes but a little practice, primarily for the shooter to gain confidence in just how easy it is. Good shooting...
@richardcrisp26404 жыл бұрын
I bought one of these new and it was really unfortunate as I had SEVERAL failure to extract using S&B during 400 rounds. When I contacted Ed Brown regarding the issue I felt I very much got a run around, that I was doing something wrong, rather than what it was which was a weak extractor spring. While I could have easily ordered one and installed it in no time I really felt that given it was brand new Ed Brown should have made it right. So, I went and traded it that night for an EDC X9. It’s a shame because I would have loved that pistol of not for the reasons mentioned.

I was a pretty active IDPA SO until this COVID crap went hot...thanks China. Anyway, the only guns I regularly saw fail, that aren't ammo length related are 9mm 1911's (mostly round diving or rounds popping nose- up in the magazine). The double stack 1911's tend to fail rarely and the higher end (+$1500) 1911's seem to not fail either. I had a RIA 22 TCM (doublestack) that I shot with the 9mm barrel and after some work on the gun (mostly cleaning edges and adjusting mag feed lips), it became very reliable. Basically, you can either spend a bunch of money or a bunch of work to make one reliable. In either case, don't skimp on the magazines because that's usually the root cause!

I have seen more STI 2011s take a dump than I can count. The only ones that failed more than them were single stack 9mm 1911s.

The 1911 platform is underrated by the modern gun owner. A moderately priced 1911 has a better trigger and sights than a typical striker fired pistol with aftermarket parts. When you move up to something a Wesson or Brown product there is nothing in the plastic pistol world that compares. I take an opposite view about the safety. I like the grip safety. It allows safe carry in the holster with the thumb safety disengaged. That is something I would never do with my BHP. I have 1911s with both guide rod systems and prefer the GI guide rod and a normal barrel because it is easier to field strip.

At that price point ($2k), the accuracy and fit and finish is great for a competition gun. However, I wouldn't CCW one for the simple fact that if I had to use it, it would be confiscated by law enforcement and getting it back might be iffy. I don't trust government to take my stuff and return it to me once the long process of the "justice system" is done. Lots of less accurate firearms will accomplish the same thing at bad breath ranges and won't kill my wallet.
