I lost my religion when I was a teen. I did not do my prayers, I struggled to continue and alhamdulillah with the help of Allah and my cousin I was able to get back to them and I never stopped since then. My prayers are an important part of my day. Now reflecting the thought about always having a baseline, I think that mine now is my prayers and my Hijab, they're both my survival kits if I may say alhamdulillah. I chose to wear Hijab when I was 13 and I never took it off since then alhamdulillah

For me personally, when I started to have doubts like you said I sought correct knowledge about what concerned me. Aqeedah is really an important thing to learn. I can’t emphasize that enough. The more you dwell on your doubts by yourself, the bigger they’ll get until they become all consuming. To get out of darkness, one must seek knowledge with a sincere heart that’s truly looking for Allah. If you go into it to prove or disprove something, chances are you won’t like what you find or it’ll reinforce your doubts even more. If the person teaching you about Islam isn’t engaging to you, remember your learning it not to be entertained but to gain knowledge so you can better your relationship with Allah. Not everyone teaches the same way or has that cool personality that makes lessons fun. Always remember your sincere intentions when you’re doing something to help you get through it.

I would just like to point out It is not a fair statement to assume that someone lost their faith because they took their hijab off. I appreciate that this is a series for sister. We talk about making it okay for sisters to talk to one another and share struggles. I have never heard anyone say a man lost his faith because he shaved his beard. We have always been and will continue being more judgmental to our sisters. Allah knows what sisters are going through. May Allah swt make it easy upon all of us, Ameen! ❤️

Beard and Hijab is not the same. Men are not prescribed to grow a beard in a Quran whereas women are required to wear long garment that covers her whole body is in a Quran. Beard is sunnah and Hijab is wajib.

If you take off hijab knowing it's wajib, then unfortunate for you, because at some point in time, you disobeyed you Creator knowingly and you should repent before "you die".

I just came to say this, I don't observe hijab but I make my salaahs etc. If you speak to me all that comes out of my mouth is Allah and my love for Allah. The Muslim community automatically assumes sisters without hijab don't love Allah. There are sisters who observe hijab who "sin" its just not seen to others. So I think there should be no judgement for either Muslim. Islam and iman is ebb and flow (as much as we want to pretend to be perfect we aren't) Allah doesn't judge or turn anyone away if we come to him with he's affairs so why do humans judge and want to turn away other people. This is what turns away people from Islam

I decided to watch this episode of honest tea talk and the episode called highs and lows of faith, since my iman has been really weak and it was so difficult for me to find the motivation to even watch or do anything Islamic and watching these 2 episodes gave me the motivation to finally pray and gave me some reminders I needed to know. I converted to Islam in 2011 and the ladies I worked with supported me as far as being my circle of believing women. I went with them to Masjid, they gifted me with my first hijab and were always there to assist me with anything I needed. The problem started when I left that company we worked for and I moved houses, somehow I distanced myself and lost all contact with them. Ive been inactive ever since. Now I want to come back and I dont know where to start. Then I come across this video :) 14:15 - 16:15 I felt this part!!!

Just to reiterate what Sumayah mentioned, I believe it's mostly about the circle. Allah forbids your spouse is the reason you're losing faith. You've got to have a support system in place and that's your sisterhood circle. I like the showing up part, and not staying below the baseline even when the Sunnah cannot hold. However, my fear or should I say concern in that respect is, if the fard was the only baseline, it means the only way to go would be down. And for that, I'd say we should do check on each other regularly especially when the sister we know is usually cheerful or bubbly suddenly goes quiet.

Salam alaykum sisters, great topic. I can relate to this subject. One suggestion I have is maybe doing a part 2 of this topic where it touches upon mental health as a cause of losing religion. Anxiety, depression, grief etc are a big contribution to people losing faith especially as its a taboo subject and many people cant seek help for fear of labeling and ridicule. I can say its something I personally went through and battled and alhamdulilah dhikr, dua and salah kept me grounded.

The part that touched me the most is the part where one of the sisters said it is so easy for us to just judge these other sisters who take their hijab’s off and say astaqfurilah but when the test hits us we do not know how we will react. We should never be content with our iman we always need to work on it and continue to ask Allah to help us strengthen it.

Additionally if you're feeling tired, like really tired, drained perhaps by the company of a particular person or group of people. Enduring hits while your down. Having no rahma or shafaqa from those around you who are supposed to love and protect you but fail to protect you from themselves. This deep tiredness one feels could easily be used by the shaitan and lead them to fall short on the basics of their deen. I would say we sometimes have to look at our company and if their is a toxicity around us holding us down we need to take that toxicity out of our life in order to come back up for air and have the strength to grip back on to Allah's rope and slowly pull ourselves higher. It's not easy to do especially if that toxicity comes from a spouse and children are involved but we must take comfort in knowing that if we remove this toxicity for the sake of lightening the load to aid us to return to the light then this will be noticed by Allah and he will surely let everything fall into place for you.

Amazing talk. There is a psychiatric side to it I think. Patients who suffer from undiagnosed religious OCD particularly, may turn away from religion as the sight of masjid, the sight of an aya, the Quran can be a source of trigger of blasphemous thoughts. Ofcourse, there is the "waswasa" side of it but religious OCD is well-documented and responds highly to treatment. One of the advice I would give is that to make this problem known in our community as muslims, so that people get help and don't suffer unnecessarily. Allah knows best xx.

Masha Allah may Allah reward you sisters. I think the high level of worship you try to put your self on which becomes hard and after a while you feel the weight and you fall. Remember Allah loves the small consistent worship in oppose to alot of inconsistent worship. Your environment also has a huge impact on the level of your iman, the people you hang out with. So like aliyah said let your Salah be the were you draw your line even if you have to struggle to get up or even while praying your concentration is not there just continue with the rukus and the sujuds and pray for Allah to strength your eman, inhsan and sabr. I think everyone needs to set their own baseline. You cant start at the typical "basics" if you were never there to begin with. That's cant be everyone's base. For me I just start with something small like saying one dua and just focusing on the next prayer and go from there. I can't make praying 5 times a day my baseline if I've never prayed before in my life. That's something we have to build to in my opinion. Also some women take off their hijab and that doesnt mean they dont believe, or they dont pray. I actually pray alot and I dont wear hijab. I dont pray 5 times a day but I'm working towards it. Some people's struggles are more visible than others and equating the loss of hijab to no faith is extreme.

you know what reminds of when UmRayyan's last advice was about Salah is this ayah, ان الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر ولذكر الله أكبر والله يعلم ما تصنعون for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.

I think that sometimes it's unintentional because we're so busy trying to be superwomen (to our husbands, children, our family, his family, our friends, his friends, the community etc.) while taking care of the house and possibly studying and/or working . When we do this, usually the first thing we lose is the sunnah part of our salah and then the fardh salah gets rushed and shortened. Also, we don't make time to do our daily du'aas and reading the Qur'an, and before you know it we reach such a low point and we don't know how we got there. At other times we're not as careful with ensuring that we don't follow weak opinions that justify things that we really want to do but that deep down make us uneasy and that most Muslims are warning us against (e.g. to do with wearing certain types of hijab, working/studying constantly with non-mahram men, dealing with interest, having questionable businesses etc.). These actions usually end up being an initial footstep from the footsteps of Shaytan that eventually lead us far from Allah and deeper into issues that are definitely haram. Here, we also reach a point where we don't recognise who we are anymore, physically in terms of our hijab or internally when it comes to our relationship with our Creator and the views that we hold deep within us. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Consult your heart. Righteousness is that about which the heart feels tranquil and the soul feels tranquil, and sin is that which wavers in the heart and moves to and fro in the breast even though people again and again have given you their legal opinion [in its favour].”

I am falling further and further away as well. I don't wear hijab, I rarely pray or read Quran. Alhamdulilah I don't participate/have desires to do any other haraam activities. Assalamu 'Alaikum, One thing y'all didn't mention is that the feeling of unworthiness to face Allah swt is only one way for a person to lose iman. There are several others that should be addressed, like experiencing traumatic events, and suffering to a point where a person completely loses hope. For example, some may say, "I suffered abuse nearly all my life, and you're going to tell me that Allah is there for me? Why should I pray to someone who was not there for me when I needed Him most?" And one thing that these people don't realize is that their suffering from this world can lead them to relief in the next, so long as they hold on to their faith. It's so hard. And I can't tell you myself that I have suffered any experience that had led me to barely hold on to Allah swt, if I'm being honest, but if you truly realize that this life is a test, and that this life is so short compared to the next, then may Allah swt grant you patience to endure your hardships in this world and grant you the highest place in Jannah. Allah swt knows best.

Christians went, are going through and are still trying to navigate the same things for centuries. Sometimes Muslims criticize Christians for immorality and secularism that has infiltrated our religion, however Muslims are now realizing the same challenges as more of them emigrate to western countries and have children who push boundaries and sometimes go their own way- the western way. 3) the basic premise of our faiths are the same. We aim to serve God with our lives, pursue joy and happiness while on earth with the hope of being with him in heaven.

I think the best advice I can give is to maintain salah (with meaning and understanding of the words), make sincere dua to Allah, and take some time out to reflect on life. Its purpose. Think about Allah. Learn about Him. His names and attributes. Learn the true solid aqeedah of Islam that Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wassallam came with. Internalizing that knowledge and reality will in sha Allah help the iman of sisters.

I love watching you sisters. MashaAllah great job. To me I think people lose their faith because they don’t have the depth understand of the Quran. What I mean is you really have to put an effort to learn Arabic and understand the tefseer in Arabic in order to feel it and really have that connection with Allah. Leaning the Quran from translation will not do it.

Samira Abdu learning the arabic and tafseer of the Quran is without a doubt, an aim that all Muslims should have and sincerely strive to achieve and implement however, respectfully I'd have to disagree with the fact that in order to truly "feel" the Qur'an you need to know arabic. Yes indeed, knowing Arabic would do great for improving that connection with Quran and ultimately Allah but I wholeheartedly believe that one can have a firm relationship with the Quran and Allah even before this.

I think learning the meaning of Quran and trying to learn/memorize new surahs in your Salah increases the khushoo3. always reading quls every Salah is gona get more routine and would never realise what you're reading, you'll end up just mumbling in your Salah and straight to ruku3 ect. end up with Salah without contemplating the words of Allah.

Salam Alaykum I appreciate the points you ladies have made about what would lead a sister to check out. However, I feel like there are many points you didn't mention, including how Muslim women can go through a phase where they might feel like a lot of the things they're doing, such as wearing the hijab and just fulfilling certain "obligations" that Muslim men don't have to deal with, isn't placed on them by Allah, but more by the patriarchy system within Islam. A lot of individuals in my generation have those questions unanswered because although we are told to refer to the Qu'ran, a lot of stuff still don't make sense. So I think there is another intermediate between being 100% connected to the faith and completely losing it. The reason why I say this is because I definitely have not lost my connection with Allah, but I find it hard to practice the way we are "supposed to."

I think something missing from this episode is people losing faith & religion bc of conflicting reports on the origins of religion & doubts that come with that. Not necessary that the person went through something deep personally.

Asalam Aleikum warahmatulah wabarakatuh. I think we should be more honest here ladies by the time a sister finds her self in such a mood is guilt. After a sin, like zinah or theft one is really guilty to go in front of Allah. I believe tests from Allah usually draw us nearer to Allah so He can get us through. Because we believe and know we have no where to run. The best we can do is try and keep check on our company, friends. Try to fall in love with Allah always by remembering the good He has blessed us with in our personal lives. Sisters always look back where you came from and where you are. And then look at those who has less or going through much more pain than you. Then that will give you hope that your not at your worst. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can handle. Your stronger than you think.
