I always like it when they take the colonies without killing the bees. A lot of people forget how important bees are to the ecosystem due to the fact that they are one of the main pollinators of not only flowers, but all plant life.

When the comb is almost black, you know the hive is at least 2.5 yrs old but could be much older than that. I remember one I did in a wall void of a house that was as dark as tar paper with comb so tough it had to be cut with a sawzall! ...JP

Nice cutout JP. I did one back in August (25th) over on the Indiana/Ohio state line in a large Beech tree. Storm had broken top of tree off right at the hive bottom. Bees doing great so far. Thanks for another great video. I hope you know how much we all appreciate your video postings.

Great removal once again JP, you do 'em best. I had to rip what was left of a hive out of a tree recently, six pounds of bees with a nice Russian Queen, the beekeeper who was originally supposed to do it left the job half done and only took the comb. Glad you took it all JP, and I hope those bees do good for you. Happy Beekeeping, Cole.

I recently removed some from a fallen oak branch. These ladies had moved in after the branch had fallen, though, and the comb was almost black, so they must have been there for quite some time. I will say, it is a CHORE getting bees out of a "bee gum" (tree or log with a hive in it). Good work.

great video, a lot of work followed by a new hive, everybody wins! (like many of your videos!) possibly you’ve done this, but could you make a short video showing the hive relocated with others, building the honey and then how you extract the honey for sale?

tuffduty I’ve been donating the majority of the colonies I’ve been removing the last three years to my buddy Schawee. I’ve had two arm surgeries over the last few years & some neck issues that have set me back a great deal with my beekeeping endeavors & I’ve had a few issues with my main beeyard but hope to get things straight this year. I am going to try to at least provide some footage this season detailing where we place the bees I remove at Schawee’s place on 3,000 acres. I do have a video of my main beeyard where Schawee & I pulled honey that day titled “In The Beeyard.” I also have a video detailing how I harvest honey titled Honey Harvesting (JPthebeeman). Both can be located here on KZbin.

@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
Dave Maloney I did not put any bee quick in the smoker, you could put some directly in the smoker if you wanted to. I don't care much for bee go nor Honey Robber. I've used Honey Robber in the past when (for a short period) bee quick was not available & would not advise using it in a smoker nor anywhere around bees. I found H.R. seriously disoriented bees besides smelling like cherry flavored vomit not to mention it's an extreme eye irritant. My repellent of choice nowadays is Honeybgone, great product, smells nice.

That was great you saved the bees, I always wonder if a hive could die after something like that. Was not too long ago we where wondering what was going on with them. Hive failure was happening all around us, and the fear of losing honey bees all together. Reports from the USDA on the decreasing number of hives do to mites and something called Colony Collapse Disorder. I was a farmer's daughter way back in Missouri, helped run my father's farm out near Middleton. I had notice a drop in the bees , the flower bed did not seem to attract as many bees as I remembered when I was a kid. I had notice a lot of farmers saying it was harder to get bee farmers to get hives to their crops. I worked hard with the Conservation Department for other reasons for the wild quail that I was trying very hard to bring back their numbers. Guess my Dad and I where Lucky , we had a few wild hives, living in the woods near the fields, Had Indian Creek running threw it, with lots of wild flowers too. I miss those days, I loved that farm, kept me working all day, great place to raise kids, and have a couple of dogs. But enough of that back to JP the Beeman, the super hero of the bee world.

It's too bad the comb was ruined by the hive beetles. How do you make sure that they don't follow them into the new hive, besides not using the infested comb? It's crazy to think that the hive beetles only came to North America in the late 90's, and before that they had never been a problem here. It's too bad that they made their way here. It's also too bad that they waited so long to call you after the tree fell. It was a good video 👍

I've always been curious about this, what's so great about the queen bees? I know they're the rulers of the give but still, will a nest die without them?
@TheRealWeirdoC9 жыл бұрын
Matt VanDyke The queen is the only bee that can lay eggs. Without a queen to lay eggs and produce new workers, the entire colony will eventually die. *Edit: JP's answer is much better than mine. Lol
@JPthebeeman9 жыл бұрын
Matt VanDyke If a queen dies suddenly, the hive will make emergency queen cells from the worker eggs she's laid or young worker larvae but emergency cells are not always the best quality. Supersedure cells are made to replace a queen & the bees have time to make these, so they are of good quality. Swarm cells are the best quality queen cells out there as a strong healthy hive plans a swarm well in advance & has time to nurture them, besides the fact that they make multiple ones as insurance the parent queen will wind up with a queen. Incidentally, the queen can lay fertilized & unfertilized eggs as can worker bees lay unfertilized eggs. Unfertilized eggs only hatch into drones.

@JPthebeeman8 жыл бұрын
+Alan spellings honey bees in my area almost always give you visual cues as to their temperament. Some will buzz around your head, some will bump into you & some can care less. The ones that are buzzing or really getting in your face are voicing their displeasure. Often they'll chill down with a lil smoking but if they don't & exhibit a lot of aggression its likely time to put on the protective gear.
