Barnyard Bees bees are really nice bees. You can do almost anything with them during the day. During the dearth at night, don't do anything around them. They turn into Yellow Jackets. I have an entrance feeder with only water in it on my hives. I figured it would be a good idea to change out the water at night. Bad idea. I got hit like three times. Duh. 🤣

Hello Dave, sorry about the storm damage, wow! Glad you're ok. I agree with Rodney, they are most likely European hornets, Vespa crabo. They are meat eaters. I've seen them take fresh spider's kill out of the spider's web. They will also eat honeybees, I have seen them take bees off the landing board, but I don't think I suffered major loses from them. I had a colony of them in a tree cavity about 500 ft from my bees. They are not in that tree this year, but I do see them occasionally. They occupy a different nest every year. Thanks for sharing and again, I'm glad you're ok

Oh, yes they eat bees, I had one nest 3 years ago near my apiary, it wasn't too bad but they catch bees even when they are flying back home. I studied them a bit, they seem quite inteligent and social. They take care of the dying and sick when they are in a trap, I put several there. Even worse, they have meetings 😢 like a sort of a round table where they must be comunicating to each other trying to sort out their fate. Heart breaking, I am glad they went away and forgot about my bees.

Yikes, great that no one was injured by the storm. As a few have noted, they are European hornets. They are apparently the only "true" hornet in North America andhave beenaround a very long time. They built that nest for easy pickings of the bees in the nuc. We have a nest and it is in close proximity to our hives. I have seen them picking off our bees. They are very aggrressive and do attack artificial lights at night. We were attcked last night and I was stung on my right cheek and it still hurts. You can try applying "honey gel" around the opening. They will ingest it and then when they deficate inside the nest. That acts as a poison and will destroy the rest of the nest. Or call an exterminator as we did.

European hornets. In my country they're protected by the law. Best option is to trap the queen in early spring. If she manages to build a nest, you will have 200-500 hornets by the end of July.

@@DoubleTopHoneyCo Hornets are predators that control other populations of insects. Without hornets, insects like spiders, caterpillars, flies, crane flies and beetles would breed out of control and become a greater nuisance. Hornets control the populations of these pests by eating them. Hornets also pollinate flowers. That all being said, I completely understand the need to eradicate them from an area that is too close to people. I saw them a couple falls back raiding my compost bins. I had not seen them ever previous to that and not since.

I have a question about some honey bees. The navy base wants me to remove some bees out of a protected oak tree.the thing is the opening is about 15inches long and about 2-3 inches wide.the thing is i know i can put a box up there and make a screen cone going up through the bottom of the box preventing them from getting back in the tree.the thing is i didn't want to move them right now because i think its too late in the season unless i get them and put feed to them, but if i did get them before the base pack and seal the tree how can i make sure i get the queen out the tree even though im sure the hive has eggs and larve in it

I have these hornets on my property as well. I was checking our hive mid-day just before these storms and noticed 2 of these hornets attacking the bees that were outside cooling the hive. The hornets would catch a bee, fly away, eat the bee it caught, and then come back for more. I did manage to get a video of one eating a bee when it landed close enough in a tree nearby with it's catch. I can send you the video if you'd like? I managed to kill both hornets, but not sure how many of the bees they were able to kill. The hive seems to be doing okay though.

Asian Hornets aka Murder Hornets and they are in Northern Washington State and Canada, I believe. I live in Washington. They are not in Central Wahington yet and we are trapping and tracking like mad in my state for these Asian Hornets. Hopefully we can eradicate them before they spread! I don't have hive beetles but we have these! And normal bee suits will not stop them from getting you and they are about an inch to 1.5 inch in length. See agr.wa.gov/hornets
