Amazing Rocket Mass Heater This is new technology, and good looking.
Check out how in this video.
This is one of KIND! The Honey Do Carpenter invented the foam Mate to inject foam into concrete to make air crete. Air Crete is lightweight, Fire Proof, and bug resistant. We use portland cement mixed with foam to create air crete. It has great insulation qualities and budget friendly. Darwin has also made a mini crane to lift the gables and beams.

Darwin looks like 3.0 is a winner for cold weather for a on grid replacement to furnace. Reminds me of a Korean Ondal charcoal heating system for keeping the floor warm in winter. Only draw back was CO2 Leaks from floor into house. Always had to leave a window crack for ventalation. Lost one person to carbon monoxide when I was there in 1985 thru 86. Your design really looks like a 1950s party basement setup. Keep your wheels grinding out those aircrete plans, you really got something to make the cave man in all of us happy.

Stacking loose bricks inside the bench and lining up the holes in the brick would make it portable and easier to take apart, covering it with a rock slab of some sort. It may even have better thermal properties of heat retention versus the way you're doing it with the air-crete. Thanks for sharing this!

Nice Darwin, there are a few things I would do differently however. I wouldn't use air create in the bench because of the insulation value I wouldn't think would transfer the heat to the room. The other thing I would add, and this is just for looks more than anything, is add glass to the door so you can see the fire. Other than that we know it works very very well. I would buy one once I get my cabin going.

Some system tweaks.. 1. Outside air intake. Pair it with chimney an preheat intake air. 2. More air deflection gates. A. To start a draw on the fire. Add fan onto secondary exhaust loop in chimney. B. Your burn chamber could be set up to take multiple fuels or feeds. Kindling fire could sweep into or past cord wood. Waste oil could be Burned separately or in conjunction. A cooking stove section could use same exhaust route or quicker route in summer. Or a dedicated water heater or boiler section could share or not the thermal bank. C. Use a gate to divert exhaust piping thrue a water thermal bank. Jacuzzi. Insulated storage tub, tank, or trough. If radiator fluid, could melt snow an ice from pex pipe under new sidewalk or driveway. Heat sections of green house or garage floor. 3. Air ducts to push heat into far corners . Though the hot water banks could be made to do the same function. Store or move heat to different rooms.

I love this design and you have probably put a lot of thought into it. I followed your "Dirt Patch Heaven" build and was impressed. I would recommend you build this and start experimenting with it. Pea gravel as discovered by many rocket mass heater builders is not a good thermal mass battery due to all the air gaps in a pile of gravel. I would not use aircrete due to it's insulative properties. You need a solid material.

Very interesting design. The refractory aircrete used in the burn chamber and riser is great. An insulated burn chamber/riser is very important in a rocket mass heater to keep the temp up for a complete burn. Using aircrete in the bench may not make sense as it will keep the heat in the pipe in the bench rather than radiating into the room. If you want to reduce the heat transfer close to the bench inlet, aircrete in this area may work well. If the point is to avoid a permanent installation, pea gravel is better, but still not great as is does not conduct the heat efficiently throughout the mass. Mixing fine sand w/ the pea gravel will improve the efficiency. The pea gravel/sand mix can be vacuumed out if you want to move the bench. Using wood in the bench insulates the mass, so it might be better built with steel studs and cement board. I would like to see a small cooking surface on the top of the riser....

As usual, another great job Darwin. Some great comments here also. I see two major problems with this type of heat that have yet to be addressed. 1. Not being UL listed makes renders ANY homeowners policy null and void should your house burn down for any reason. 2. Heating a large mass prevents turning the heat off. A big problem is that once the mass is heated, say a radiant floor, if the weather decides to warm up, the inside of the house becomes an oven. Perhaps building an outside type of rocket stove would solve the first problem although, a lot of the efficiency will be lost. The second problem might be to use an aircrete insulated water holding tank where the water is heated by the rocket stove and the water circulated through baseboard radiators or water/air heat exchangers. Anybody else have some ideas on this? We should all be living in aircrete houses which won't burn and tell the insurance companies to just sell us policies for theft and vandalism.
@HoneyDoCarpenter
@HoneyDoCarpenter 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right, While to a certain extent, I believe this can be mitigated. I am planning an automatic switch of sorts that will close the front door damper as the fuel source and the heat generated diminishes. This will prevent your heat in the battery from escaping out the flue pipe. However it can be manually opened back up reversing the heat flow through the copper radiant tenicles and llowing the heat in the battery to escape out of the stove pipe.

Not to worry by flick22d601 the insurance companies aren't going to pay anyway so . . if you are smart you don't need the insurance companies for anything especially for paying the bills. The biggest mistake the American people made was letting them bail out the U.S. Government in the depression i.e. now they are the "Special Interest" to tell our government leaders how to force insurance down our throat.

Some suggestion for further improvement: built add-ons for using this heating system in combination with a (gas fuelded) central heating system by running a water filled pipe through the heater, so that your cold inlet to your central heating system gets pre-heated, and you can then use this system to also heat other rooms, using your central heating system, and save a lot on gas usage. Only for the central heating system, not for hot tap water and hot shower water, as that uses cold water directly from the water system, while the central heating system uses a seperate closed circuit for circulating water.

Thermal mass, you should avoid aircrete as its a insulator it is extremely poor in storing heat, ie its a very good heat insulator. I think peat gravel is slightly better then airecrete as it has more mass but it still has too much air gap, air is a poor heat transfer from pipe to mass. just use the traditional method of thermal mass cob = clay/sand/straw, its extremely cheap, no air gab barrier, easy to take apart if needed. or normal concrete is also a good thermal mass its more expensive, but quick to produce. both cob and concrete is very heavy tho, limited air gab, that is what makes it a good thermal mass heatsink. Another thing people do is to do some sort of heat exchange just after the riser, small electric fan will do just constantly blowing at it. you maybe able to do it in your existing design, as the peat gravel has a lot of air gab for a small fan blowing inside. best of both worlds, fast at warming up the air in the room, shut fan off later on and heat up the thermal mass instead, else, just make a duck and keep pumping the hot air to another room or something.

Leon Cryp water is has a heat capacity of 1 cal/g. Brick is about 0.3 cal/g. What do you think about using water for heat storage in these systems? Water also is easily obtained and can transfer heat efficiently to other areas. I suppose would also need think about the space requirements. The density of materials being proportional to the mass and volume. I am wanting to cast aircrete with carbon felt as a skin to increase tensile strength. Then perform some experiments on it to see if the Portland cement stands up to thermal cycling. You have good comments and I am wanting to kick around ideas.

@leoncryp8182

Snowy Owl, wow I knew water was a good heatsink but didnt know its over 3x better then brick in storing heat, I dont have much experience with rocket stove, its just one of those things Im interested in as its low tech stuff that any 3rd world country can do, the efficiency on a properly built rocket stove is insane, like 10x better then any store bought burner. I have not come across people using water as a heat sink per say, its best u ask people that has actually got experience, the 1 negative thing i can think of is, if water gets above say 40-50c it will start to evaporate, u probably need some airtight container with small pressure valve in case steam builds up, but it would seem water would be a great heatsink. Ive seen on youtube someone built a rocketstove to warm his aquaponics dome fish/plant greenhouse with successes. he was raising tropical fish = Talapia and salid greeds in heavy snow area. One thing tho I have not seen is people integrating rocketstove it to their underfloor heating Yet!, but Ive seen a guy on youtube that did something similar to his newly built garage but he was using solar heating instead. he build a small pool using wood and plastic to hold the heat exchange area, with lots of pipes and automatic sensor electronic system to control pumps. Im not surprise if someone has already done it, eg rocket stove, where the whole houses concrete floor is the heatsink, this is only achievable if new house was design/build from the ground up, as you need to install lots of underground pipes before you lay the concrete floor. otherwise existing house with existing floor central heating system can be modded to use traditional heating methods and rocket stove ie run dual system, or just entirely off rocket stove. I can think of many obstacles already with extreme hot water pipes with built up pressure is going to be a headache, there needs to be a safe way to transfer hot water around, and a fail safe redundant system, maybe having the first heat exchange (rockets stove to water tank) further away from the riser so it will never overheat, cant rely on electronics alone unless there is a backup battery system. The 2nd heat exchange (water tank to concrete floor) can be place any where, even in the basement. Unless someone goes all hardcore and use molten salt as liquid lol.
@sammychung4156
@sammychung4156 5 жыл бұрын
You could connect it to a radiant floor design, where you have hot water that you store in the bench run through the flooring system. Have that hot water circulate through the flooring and continually reheated through the bench. Just my 2 cents.
@leoncryp8182
@leoncryp8182 5 жыл бұрын
Sammy Chung, yes thats basically what I said earlier and its a very good idea, the problem is getting the hot water from rocket stove to the tank in the first place, if the pipe gets above 100c it will turn into steam which is very dangerous, eg if the pump fails, the first heat exchange system may explode worse case scenario, pressure valves will be needed, also need an automatic way to shutdown the rocket stove if water pump fails, eg maybe as simple as just shutting off the air intake and the rocket stove system will stop burning, maybe need offline battery back system as redundancy, ie if water temp gets above 90c shut air valve off. there are cheap 12v electronic system u can buy from ebay, aliexpress. 12volt pump, 12v solenoid, 12v temp relay control, all hocked up to used 12v car battery + smart charger (trickle feeds/charge 12v battery system to keep it topped up) no need complex arduino. the agriculture, farm uses such system to turn pumps, fans on for their plants and livestock.

I am probably just showing my ignorance here but, .... Does the riser not want to induce a vortex to allow complete burn of the gasses within the riser length ... I do not see how you are starting that vortex off (no off set to the burn chamber /riser)? You have a square section to the "barrel" .... this would also counteract any vortex! You have an insulated section over the "barrel" .... or is this Thermal Mass? .... eather way it will reduce the flow of gasses due to draw ... unless you are getting the draw by having a hot exhaust into the chimney? If you have hot gasses entering the bench how do you stop the top of the bench getting too hot whilst the bottom is still warming up? You have commented that this is scaleable, but how you can get it to work on 6" logs without enlarging the whole thing to become a commercial furnace? As I understand it you need air to wash over the sticks to fan the flame to make the "Rocket" increasing the sticks by a factor of 20 or so will mean you would need a gale to be blowing over them! You say you have had this working for a season so obviously you have overcome these problems ..... it will be interesting to see how and why it works! Also if it works as advertised it is no longer a traditional rocket mass heater but a new varient! In your future videos can you explain how you turn aircrete from insulator to thermal mass storage .... that is something I am having trouble wrapping my head round ;0) All the best!

Wouldn't aircrete in the bench insulate instead of acting as a mass to store and radiate heat? Isn't that the reason it's used around the burn chamber? It seems like it might be good at the bottom of the bench (below the pipes) to direct heat up instead of having some go into the floor, but maybe not. My understanding is that pea gravel isn't great as mass because all of the air spaces mean there's a combination of convective and conductive heat, but it's probably about the easiest portable solution.

Question: If this were in a small cabin type structure could you incorporate some sort of directional flow to use it to also 1. Cook with and or 2. Heat a fairly substantial Water drum (35-55 gal.) for the shower or doing dishes etc.? Is this feasible? Because if it is, you've killed three really big birds with one small rocket and taken off-grid to a whole other level.

Mike. I have allready sold one and am going to hook it into a central heating duct system for the whole house. You will see. I will explain in a new video in the nex few days. It is an awesome system.

All the reasons that make aircrete good for many things, are the same reasons it's bad for the bench.

Whoa..... Darwin, are you trying to keep the bench top from heating? Because if you poured aircrete over your bench ducts- you would be SHIELDING the heat from moving out of the ducts, into a mass and consequently, from heating the top where butts are waiting to be warmed. Your floor would then take the brunt of the heat. As you have proven to your KZbin audience, aircrete is insulative and wouldn't serve as mass. Leon also makes this point. Otherwise, I love this simple design and your explanation of details.

No offense but on pictures and CGI everything works. Even Musk's Hyperloop works on CGI for at least 10 years now but in reality its sometimes different. So I would like to see working prototype.

Excellent word, Darwin, ooopppps Honie dew, . . . . LOL My only question is how do we either build a batch box, for extended burn times, like 5 hours, at slowest rates and still get the efficiency from the stove????? 2ndly, how much of a drop is possible between the Heat sink cowling and the Battery bench, as I was thinking of installing the bench / Thermal Mass in the crawl space under the house and the fire box on the 1st floor porch????? And yes it is a contained porch during the winter. B BIG time Blessed and thank you for all You, and Your WIFE, have done for us.

16:22 The only way for water to be the only combustion product would be for you to burn hydrogen. A theoretically perfect burner will still need to convert all of the carbon in the fuel to carbon dioxide, and any trace amounts of sulfur into SOx. Also, as the temperature of the burner increases some of the nitrogen in the air will be converted into NOx.

Cartoons, nothing real. Functionality is uncertain because all conditions are theoretical (practice differs from theory - eg wind speed) In a word, waste of time.
