Elvis Presley was one of the main reason the Arizona memorial got built. He did a huge fundraiser back in the early 60's to help fund the construction.
@sardu5516 күн бұрын
Actually, it was Colonel Parker. He loved Hawaii and did whatever he could to tie Elvis to the place and giving him a free trip there on business. Parker came up with the idea for a memorial concert to help fund the place, then let Elvis know he was going to do the concert. It was his last concert until the Comeback (Singer) Special in 68. Elvis himself liked the islands and went there several times over the years. Important events in his personal life are tied to the place.
@VintageLPs2 күн бұрын
@@sardu55Colonel Parker may have set it in motion but Elvis and his band and singers/choirs did all the work to raise the money. Elvis was the most generous man who gave away millions to charities and individuals. Parker got a huge share of everything Elvis earned.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip used to br able to go up Aloha Tower in their elevator to see the sights from the top but 9/11 changed that (though they should reconsider). There is a nightly luau on the grounds by Aloha Tower (hence all that party event items on the grounds). Honolulu : hoe (like the garden tool)-kno-lou-lou). There is no 'a', so it must not be pronounced like the town of Hana (on Maui).

I was in Maui 27 years ago with my late husband and 3 teenage daughters. We rented like an apartment in Lanai and did alot of cooking in house because it was expensive to eat out. We ended up spending approximately $15,000 for ten days but it was the most wonderful vacation I've ever been on. I cried when Maui burned. Never got to see the Arizona memorial but I really want to. I have a second cousin at rest there.Glad your enjoying your visit.

My, my how it's changed! I haven't been back for about 57 years. We were there for their first State Fair. The food was amazing even then. We stayed at the Outrigger right on the beach. Skip the car rental, get an unlimited bus pass. Go to the Goodwill near Pearlridge where you can buy brand new clothing from last year's supply. Eat at family restaurants at the edge of town. Same food. Leave your mainland luggage at home. If you want to see life in Hawaii, take the bus, meet the people and see the sights how everybody lives.

There are other islands on Earth I would rather go to visit than Hawaiian islands at this point. I won't mention it since they are already being visited heavily from tourists by word of mouth and social media. Watter's World had an interesting video he posted recently about European cities that have been overwhelmed by tourists in the past couple years. I think the post COVID period we are in now has had a huge influence by youtube and such that has attracted tourists to specific places. I can only imagine right now in June 2024 that a place like Venice Italy or the Amafli coast or Mallorca is jammed packed at the moment.

I went to elementary school in Honolulu and have been there numerous times since as my sister has lived there for over 30 years. It is very expensive regarding rent and food or any basic essentials and lacks having any seasons, every day is basically the same. Unless you like the beach there is not really much else once you have seen it all, which is quite easy considering it is an island. Maybe a nice place for a retired wealthy person, which I am not.

I went to St. Louis High School in Honolulu in 1972-73, where I graduated from. Lots of fun things to do there, and around the island. I remember as a poor student oftentimes visting a small drive-in, in the vicinity of a Buddhist dormitory where they had the standard drive-in fare but also deep-fried mahi-mahi burgers, which I always got in addition to their version of ramen. At the time it was very affordable, and which I still remember as among the best meals I've ever had.

I made my first visit there (as a 12 year-old) at the very end of 1979, and our family vacation timed it perfectly for a typhoon that kept knocking out power & flooding the streets. It was also an eye-opening experience when on our very first night we were walking by the International Market Place and a guy stopped us to ask my father if he needed to buy some weed 😆 (he passed on that, btw). As someone who loves old movie theaters I wish you could have seen the incredible one that was there - the Waikiki, which opened in 1936 and closed in 2002. I went to see the Steven Spielberg movie "1941" there, and it remains the most beautiful cinema I've ever been in - absolutely huge, with palm trees on either side of the screen. Back then my parents didn't mind heading off to see what they wanted to see while their youngest wandered around on his own 😊

I'll be cooking all but 1 meal a day in my room and bringing canned and boxed foods with me, which is why an airline with 2 checked bags included is the best choice. I'll also use the weekly bus pass ($30) for transportation except to and from the airport (luggage), which I'll use Lift or another rideshare. No expensive Luaus needed, there are plenty of free Hula dance shows around. I should be able to keep the trip well under $5,000, if not less than $4,000.

Really good tour, thank you. We started going (we're in Calif) about 20 years ago, however Hawaii is currently on pause because our dollars go farther in other places. We really like the gardens and museums (we're old, ha ha), and the warm weather, warm ocean and clean air. Plus each island feels very different. Oahu has all the services and the windward side feels kinda removed from it all. Glad you appreciated Peal Harbor; the oil floating on the water after all these years are like tears.

I used to live in Honolulu and other communities on the island. A tourist doesn’t get the picture of what it’s like to live there. Yes, you enjoy the beautiful weather and generally lovely environment but it’s a facade of everyday life which is a financial struggle for existence. The statistics you presented are misleading. Unless you’re in a high income bracket or are willing to accept a low standard of living, Paradise is not worth the cost. My wife and I both had professional jobs but we struggled to provide the basic necessities of life. We could not afford anything extra like dinner out occasionally. Purchasing a house or condo was impossible and rent absorbed most of our income. We couldn’t even afford an occasional trip to the mainland. The cost of groceries and other necessities is outrageous. Everyone in the local families work for low wages at multiple jobs. It’s a wonderful place to visit but not to stay. When we left Hawaii and returned to the mainland, our standard of living rose significantly and we now enjoy a comfortable retirement in the Chicago area. And there is something else nobody talks about publicly. There is discrimination everywhere against mainlanders. We never felt welcome or respected. Aloha

Nice things & nice places are expensive. So many people flock to California & complain how expensive it is & Florida is getting that way too. It stands to reason they're nice places. If I'm middle class & I'm looking for a car I don't go to a Mercedes dealership. Its a shame that people who are born there can't make it but you have to use it to you're advantage. You can't expect the government to pay you're way all you're life.

I have not really experienced discrimination said out loud but there are some who give me the side eye or are unfriendly. My husband and I own a business here and for businesses, Hawaii is awful!! They tax over and over again, the insurance is high, as well as no significant deductions you can take at the State level. There is really no incentive to own a business here. The unusual trees are Banyan Trees. They purposely out compete other trees that are yes native to Hawaii, by out shading the other trees. They even drop roots all the way to the ground to help support their canopies which can reach 4.5 acres wide! Banyan trees are known for their unique ability to spread their canopies over a wide area. According to the search results, here are some remarkable examples of the width of banyan tree canopies: Thimmamma Marrimanu, a 550-year-old banyan tree in India, has a canopy that covers 19,107 square meters (4.721 acres). The Great Banyan, located in the Indian Botanical Garden of Kolkata, has a canopy that covers 4.67 acres (1.89 ha). Another notable example is Dodda Aalada Mara, a banyan tree in Bangalore, India, which has a spread of circa 2.5 acres. In some cases, banyan trees can spread laterally by using their prop roots to grow over a wide area, covering an area that resembles a grove of trees. It’s worth noting that the growth rate of a banyan tree can vary depending on factors such as environmental conditions, soil quality, and availability of water and nutrients. However, it generally takes many years for a banyan tree to develop a canopy that spans an acre. In summary, banyan tree canopies can spread over a wide area, ranging from 2.5 acres to 19,107 square meters (4.721 acres), depending on the specific tree and environmental conditions.

I visited Honolulu back in 1985, for a Aussie armed with pacific pesos it was not that expensive, now its way out of my pay grade. Those back suburbs remind me very much of a typical Australian beach suburb. You would hate the small yards. Looking at your expenses it would actually be cheaper for you to visit Sydney, Australia. If I can get a return ticket to LA from Sydbey for $A1100 ($750US), surely even after adding the Dallas to LA leg you would still be ballpark. Accommodation $A200 to $A400 (including 5 star Marriot), that is $132 to $260US. Taxes included, no sneaky fees. Food expensive here compared to say Asia, but similar to what I have seen you pay across USA, and no tipping and taxes included. There is quite a bit of colonial architecture in Sydney. Public transport is almost give away prices when converted to US dollars. Ferries, buses, trains. Sydney best to visit October to November, Spring comes early. Winter now to August is mild 60F's most days, but wind chill...brrrrr. December to Feb runs into school holidays and can be humid. March to May can get wet.

We are lucky enough to have been to Oahu many times over the years as we love it. It's a beautiful place. You showed some of the historic buildings around Honolulu and there are more such as the Bishop Museum and some interesting architecture and restaurants in Chinatown. We always rent a car as we love to travel around the island and there is much to see and appreciate! Am excited to see your next video as you explore the smaller towns on Oahu! I would also note that it is possible to do a less expensive trip as we have to since we don't have a lot of money. This video made me "homesick" for another visit!

Never been there. Would not want to live in a hi rise. So glad you showed us some houses! All the other sites. Wonderful tour.

I live in a condo near Waikiki. Can’t afford a house here. Might have to move to Texas where my Mom lives in a house 3x the size of my condo. However, my condo costs more than her house. But the weather is great here, especially in the winter and it’s relatively close to Japan where we like to travel.

Really you never heard of the Spam thing ….. Spam is popular in not only Hawaii but in South Korea, the Philippines, and Japan There was a Spam shortage a few years ago and people went crazy because they couldn’t get it 😇

Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, the Aloha Tower area was super busy with tourists and locals! It had a lot of shops and restaurants. It was really a happening place. I miss those times!

Congrats on finally making it to Hawaii. We vacationed on the big island 2 years ago. It was beautiful and I’m grateful we experienced it, but I feel no need to return. Your videos are good comprehensive looks at where you visit. I appreciate your work.

Incredible video. I almost cried seeing all of those names on the wall at Pearl Harbour. That gratuity on your dinner bill is crazy, I live in Ireland and we pay a 12.5% included in the bill but not even at every restaurant is that expected. American tipping culture seems excessive. The food looked great though and I appreciate how you show all sides of a town or city, it really gives a more real picture of a place and I don't think it takes away from the beauty of a place, I think it enhances the experience, so thank you for a great video.

How funny. My wife and I were just in Honolulu a month ago. Right down the street in Wiki at the Marriott. We had a great time. We also visited Pearl Harbor. We also toured the battleship Missouri which was great as well. Your summary of the expense of going there was on point. Hiking Diamond head is a must do there just for the views. You look down over Honolulu and the surrounding areas. Simply gorgeous. You can certainly BBQ lots of $100 dollars bills very quickly in Hawaii.

Hi Joe and Nic..I really enjoyed your 'tour' of Honolulu. You're right about the overall cost. It's crazy expensive, but as long as you both enjoyed yourself, then it's worth the high cost. I totally agree what you said about clothing being cheap. Compared to prices we pay in Australia, clothing in Honolulu was a real bargain. I filled up two suitcases with Levi's, J.Crew, Banana Republic and other brands when I was last there in 2014. I bought so much that today, ten years later in 2024 I'm still wearing a lot of those clothes.

They're pricing themselves out of the market with $500 a night rooms and $30 cheese burgers. French Polynesia is twice as good for half the price.

Joe & Nic, I’ve enjoyed your vlog of Honolulu, as an ex-islander.. yes, your pronunciation is a bit off. But entertaining… locations are right on., because I have relocated to the Bay Area for work and missed my home in Hawaii. I periodically scan through You tube to have a peek of the current state of my home town..you guys are great, Thank you for the wonderful vlog of your visit to Honolulu..Aloha..!
