True story. My great grandfather was the longest serving lighthouse keeper on Goat Island in Newport. The original lighthouse has been moved (?) altered over the years, and I believe it’s part of a hotel on Goat Island now. I’m going to visit it for the first time in my 65 years, next week . Your videos are awesome. Thanks for your great work!

@@joycelebaron2582 Yes! If u google longest serving lighthouse keeper on GI RI, he comes up. Charles Shoeneman. Excited, as I was raised in the South, but have always been totally intrigued by all of New England, it’s architecture, and it’s people I’ve met over the years. I have never been this far from home though, so I’m a bit anxious as well. Thanks for your reply

And he skipped over Jamestown, Portsmouth, Middletown and Charlestown. Jamestown in particular is small but interesting. (the island between the bridges on the way out of Newport) Biggest regret I had in RI was that I didn't have a motorcycle when I lived there, and the truck I drove was oversized so I didn't explore as much. When I went to Charlotte years later I bought a 400cc bike and absolutely do not regret it. I had a beat up old Texas Highway Dept. long bed extended cab. Not lifted or a dually or anything - but a PITA in those cities. Dual fuel so I mostly ran on LPG, which was cool.

Newport is a tourist based seasonal town. Many of those shops will greatly reduce their hours and close after Labor day. That is why Newport was so "busy" and had all those people. The "winter" off season rents were less than $1000/mo all in for pretty nice places. The "seasonal" rates were that much a WEEK. I lived in Middletown an entire off season, Sept-May. (you would have passed my old house when you crossed the strand from Middletown near the "strand") Come back a month later and the whole feel of the city will be different. And much cheaper.

Being a former Bristolian growing up there in my youth, the best history exploration one can start is in the graveyards. The oldest of them reveal the shipping magnates, explorers, business titans, movie starts and public figures. As a kid I practically lived at the Haffenraffer Museum next to Linden Place. My grandparents home on Central Street was built in 1732, and had "the oldest original front door in RI". Travelling this nation I can tell you we had the best education on American History in the nation, bar none.

That house in Westerly was going for $689k and it was built in 1870. It sounds about right for the East Coast, considering there is a ton of history up in those areas. I also noticed on the Babcock house that it looks like the original section of the home may have been the smaller side on the left and the right side was likely built later on as an addition. I've seen that kind of thing happen with houses, especially around where I grew up.

All of RI is more expensive than you would expect. Its a very blue collar/conservative (by East Coast Standards) area between big liberal cities in CT/NY and MA. But this video went through the most expensive areas of the state -- and the most desired. Easy access to the waterfront and the interstate.

If you could do 3 hours just about Bristol, you could probably do 10 hours just about Newport. I don't know if they counted all the servicemen and families in the 1960 Newport census, but there were thousands stationed there at the time at the Naval Base. I volunteered at the Tennis Hall of Fame for years, on Bellevue, and if you had gone down that road you would have seen all the "cottages" like The Breakers, The Elms, etc. I even volunteered for a while at Belcourt Castle, part of the Vanderbilt family's holdings. If you keep going you'll come up on Ocean Drive, where many newer mansions (many celebrities, such as Judge Judy) buy homes overlooking the ocean.

Chafee introduced the legislation and was successful in having it become part of Federal Rules and Regulations. It states in Section 353(b): “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a red, white, and blue center line in the Main Street of Bristol, Rhode Island, shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of Section 3B-a of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices of the Department of Transportation." Since 1996, thanks to the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995, Bristol’s patriotic stripes have remained year round.

You can definitely see a lot of Byzantine influence in Bristol, especially in some of the architecture and the colorful bricks they used. Don’t they also have the longest continuous running fireworks celebration in the United States? People forget or just don’t know how historical RI is and how old many of the buildings and buildings are as well as how well they are kept…. Also you can see so much English influence with how close the buildings are to each other and how narrow the streets are. $689,000 for the house in Westerly.

The Northeast has a long tradition of 'clean drinking' or going out to drink for something other than just getting smashed or rowdy. Remember, people are generally more tolerant here, and aren't ready to fight over differences as much. Bars are very common in most cities here and are almost always places to eat and drink. They didn't call them public houses for nothing.

The house on Summer St in Westerly is marked down by 36,ooo and is listed for 689,000. The kitchen seems to be updated to state of the art. However, 2 of the baths are still in the 50 to 60 style with gold and green titles. The interior is beautiful as are the grounds. There is a shop in the back yard. For that area, I'd say it's worth what they are asking. BTW, I sure enjoyed this video. Has anyone mentioned that the sound when you're inside car isn't loud enough?. Big difference between the inside and out.

The scenes of Bristol look pretty much the same as they did when I left it for Hawaii. I lived in Bristol from 1995 until my departure from there for HI in 2013. It was wonderful seeing the town via this video. I called Bristol home for 18 years. I keep telling myself I need to get back to Bristol before I get too much older. I still have this craving for a couple slices of pizza strips from the (now-gone) Wood Street Bakery that can't be satisfied with just any pizza. If you're not familiar with "RI red strips", well, it's an Ocean State thing. Like clam cakes, Autocrat coffee milk, and "cabinets" from Delekta's Pharmacy up the road from Bristol in Warren, they're all RI things. One area of Bristol that was not visited in this video is an area known as Poppasquasch Point. It's a private peninsula that extends into Narragansett Bay that's home to many magnificent estates. Oscar-winning Anthony Quinn lived on Poppasquash Point during the last years of his life (he died in 2001) and he was buried on the grounds of his estate. As I mentioned, it is a private area that (at least when I lived in Bristol) was access-controlled by guards who sat by the gate into the peninsula. It's a really beautiful area, with mega-mansions, all possessing spectacular views of Narragansett Bay, Bristol Harbor, or Mount Hope Bay. While I technically wasn't supposed to be on the point, not being a resident there, (I actually lived on Mount Hope Avenue) the guards who controlled the access to the point would turn a blind eye to me and let me run out to the end of the point and back, during my marathon training days. It was on Poppasquash Point, as well as the nearby Colt State Park, and the East Bay Bike Path, where I trained and got my running miles in. Enough so, to where I qualified for the Boston Marathon six times. I have many good memories of Bristol. Along with Hawaii and Lincoln Park in Chicago, it's one of the better places I've ever called home in my life.

The W is silent and most people get it wrong. I just have to give a huge shout-out to our (I'm in VA now) libraries in RI (I may be biased as I worked in one for years) Thanks for pointing out the one in Westerly. Most are beautiful like that. And the BIG plus is that they're all connected. As you pointed out, Westerly is at the southwest point in RI, but if you lived in the northern-most city, Woonsocket, you could order your favorite book on line and they'll deliver it up there, or to any branch near where you live.

I maybe mistaken, but I believe the population may have decreased in part to the Newport Naval Station trimming of services. It began in 1952 and has slowly lost and shifted it's responsibilities to other ports along the coast. The street you were riding along in Newport was made of what is referred to as cobblestone, original and repaired as it becomes unseated there. Great video of the Ocean State, a stark contrast to some of your other stops along the way, however an enjoyable one for your viewers. Thanks

Joe didn't go to Bowen's Wharf, Bannister's Wharf or The Brick Marketplace, (The Black Pearl!) Too touristy, I imagine.

I'm declaring that I need to go on a Joe and Nic's road trip. Y'all can be just driving Ms. Daisy. I'll sit in the backseat, and just stare out the window. I'll be quiet and will not pester to go on a potty break. It doesn't hurt to ask😂

I love coastal drives, whether they're on the edge of the ocean or running along a lake shore. This episode exemplifies one of the aspects I love: the little towns that you come across, each with their own history and personality. It's especially nice to roam around early before the town wakes up and things start to get busy. At 3:30 the "Judge Roy Bean Saloon" caught my eye--I don't really associate him with the eastern seaboard. By the way, you should be careful scratching random cats, don't want to catch a fever (bad Ted Nugent pun, har har 🙂)

My relative built the Joseph Reynolds’s house starting in 1698 and finishing in 1700. Thanks for showing it and commenting on it and the history-Marquis de Lafayette had a special room there and it is the oldest 3 story wooden building in Rhode Island. Really liked the video!

I'm surprised he skipped over Mass. He went to every other NE state except for Connecticut (yet). I don't understand the reasoning behind as Mass is the historical and cultural capital of New England.

Great videos! Joe i don't think you know how amusing you are! It is fun as a native New England coast guy to hear the amazement of the ages of our homes and buildings though. My town was incorporated in 1623.I am 60 and until 10 years ago never lived in a house less than 200 yrs old. Before my current "new" 40 yr old condo,my last house was built in 1671!

I lived in Newport back in the 50’s. We lived next door to where the Kennedy’s had their wedding reception, when they had it too. I used to play in the park where the Stone Mill is. I returned there on a road trip back in 2005. Loved seeing my history. You should have shown the Stone Mill, which is really a very old structure.

Lived there for over 40 years. Yes the navy had a big presence in Newport, Middletown. However price of housing, utilities, etc is very expensive and not many decent paying jobs. Beautiful state being run by the wrong people. Still visit as I have family still there. Don’t regret leaving, made a nice living elsewhere.

Yes. The Cup races were in Newport during the J Boat era of the 1930's through 1983. But even when they were still in New York, the bigest of the cup boats were built in Bristol. Fun Fact: the Newport-Jamestown bridge height was determined by those masts coming down from Bristol!@@joycelebaron2582

Yeay, Joe comes to RI! Yes, Bristol is fantastic. I always thought the Fourth of July Parade was Bristol's claim to fame but had forgotten my history of the DeWolf's. Many of Brown University founders got their money from slave trading. I never knew that his nephew was one of the Colts, but one of the big State Parks in RI is Colt State Park, just down the road from Lindenplace.. And no, we don't go by counties in RI. I never even knew what county I grew up in. If you get arrested for trespassing in RI you're sent to the state prison (maybe after a night in the town lockup) as there are no county jails. I think CT is that way as well.

Joe & Nic, There is much history in R.I. & everry New England State & Village. So great to see again & how it has been maintained. In my youth we would go to Block Island on the Ferry Boat & spend the day. It has the longest bar n the world & then they had a fire & rebuilt but the bar was not as long. I had heard the Harborside Inn burned, a historic Inn 1879. They had to tear it down. Ouch. Just last week. The Island was always a great place to go & get a fresh ice cream cone. Back then in Summer there were 500+people living on the island. When Fall was coming the Population went way down. See'n a lot of memories in your New England Travels. Thanks. Safe Tavels. Glad your not in Florida now with the hurricane hit'n there. Saw on TV Cedar Keys to be hit good & up & down the West Upper Coast. Calling for upto 16 foot surges. Great memories living in Central Florida. I would not live in that State today. Way to many people. 27 million toilets flushing🚽💩☁☁☁ 24/7 will surley sink that State. Safe Travels. always, Tommy🤠

Oh, the Harborside Inn burned down, I had no idea! So sad. If Joe comes back to RI it would be cool if he took the ferry from Galilee (another good idea to film) and went out there. Praying for all the people in Florida after the hurricane. Back when I was a kid we'd take the ferry, rent bikes and ride all around the island. Good memories!
