Your guide is Journeyman Falconer Joanne Bentley, a practitioner with fifteen years experience in the handling and schooling of raptors, and her young assistant Leah Danielle, herself a student of the Art intent on deepening her understanding of the (at least) 8000+ year-old practice.
With light-hearted humour, and a gentle, informational approach to conveying the techniques of “winning” one’s Feathered-companion into first working with us, then for the eye of the camera, Jo and Leah’s desire is to inspire established and new participants, wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and the wider public to inform and teach humanity about the intangible “living human-heritage” which every one of us may lay claim to through the Art of Falconry.
Thank you for watching!

Thank you for sharing these books . I will try to get the book on hoods as I have thought a lot about this part of falconry and only read small parts in books .it was nice to see your friend sitting so happily by your side at times following your hand whilst you spoke. Very nice thanks . Have a nice day.

Good evening, very nice video. We have only a few books on falconry. That's why I use my own translations, I have about 300 pages and I have translated a lot of texts from the US. They give my candidates for the falconry a test. There's history, falconry, raptor equipment, mews, bows, perchers, nutrition, health, training ... But I still love watching your videos because I can find something new in them. Thank you for your efforts.

Hi Jo absolutely loved that some really insightful books as well as some feathered humor on times I wish I could figure out why I am so drawn to that stunning feathered guy maybe its because he almost reminds me a little of a smaller version of a Golden Eagle

Most definitely, like she mentions Feathers could be a very dry and boring book but the writer injects just the right amount of humor! Have a wonderful day Richard! :) -Leah

I just wanted to say a big thanks for recommending Bird of Jove on the other video. It was a really good, fun read! I zoomed through it pretty quickly since it had me so engrossed. And it did get me thinking too.

Great video love watching your channel! Keep it up! Do you have any tips on getting a red-tailed hawk to jump to the glove?

Thank you for joining us today, Taylor! We can certainly help to the best of our ability, what stage is your schooling at? New hawk beginning to jump to the glove, seasoned hawk getting back into training? :) - Leah

Very exciting! From my experience welcoming several newbies into Team Feathers, it takes patience. Sit down if you can, make yourself comfortable, and ensure that you have enough time to wait until you get your desired result. In the first days of training, they are literally developing a new way of communicating with you, so patience is key. The desired result could be as simple as stepping up to the glove a couple of times, or jumping a distance to your glove a couple of times - there is no rush to get him/her out flying as soon as you can (contrary to popular belief). One important thing is to not stop half way through the training, or quit when something isn't working, stay there in that moment with them until you get the action you are seeking. As King Fredrick says, "keep the lesson short". If you are having a difficult time getting them to switch on after a couple of jumps to your glove, wait (and I mean wait) until you get that jump you are waiting for, and once you have gotten that result then end the session. They do not learn if we stop in the middle, they will think that is the desired result you are looking for, or they think they have "won" in some way. Make a decision ahead of time as to when you will stop, say after 5 good step-ups to the glove or three good jumps - then finish at that point. Something I like to do is visualize in my minds eye is the exact action that I'm looking for our companion to take, speaking to him/her softly and quietly, calling their name or saying simple words like "step" or "jump" or "ok". Wiggling the glove, tapping it, whistling to them, showing them the food are all signs to them that 'there is something interesting over here that I want you to investigate' and will catch their attention if it wanders. Then when they have performed the action that you are looking for, praise them! No, they are not dogs and will not respond in the same manner, but showing an indication that 'this is a good step in the right direction' is sometimes helpful to them. Then as I mentioned before, keep the lesson short. There's no sense in belaboring the lesson and drawing it out for longer than it needs to, create your plan beforehand and it will give you a good leg up in the session. Beyond the initial training session, spend time with him/her walking around, doing different random things to get them use to you and how you move. If you live in a populated area walk down the block, let them look at cars, kids playing, or if not optimal them bring them into your space and watch TV with them, make a sandwich one-handed, use the loo - these are all opportunities to let them grow and learn. Again, be patient if they're baiting. Use your best judgement to call the lesson to a close. They will be in a totally foreign world, and it is our job to make them comfortable around us. Again, patience is everything and allowing them to learn at their own pace. I hope this helps, Taylor! If Jo can drag herself away from the snow clearing, she may have some more tips. Best of luck :) - Leah

Do you ever make your own hoods? Or given this instance where the bird hated all the expensive options do you just buy them.
@TheFalconLady

I don't believe Jo has made her own hoods, I know she's just purchased all of the ones we've used for team feathers as so many folks make absolutely stunning hoods that do the trick. I tried to make a hood years ago (I actually gave it to Jo as a gift) and speaking from that experience it's a little more difficult than you might think. Not impossible obviously but definitely something that takes practice! :) -Leah

From an educational perspective this video did next to nothing for me... From Mo's intense tracking of your hand across the page as if you were pointing out a paragraph that he should peruse at length; to his transfixed stare directly at you while you were speaking and eventual glare at the camera as if to punctuate your point; to his glance up at the ceiling ending with a cock of his head as if in great contemplation of your words; I could hardly concentrate on a thing you were saying. 😆🤣🤣😆 I'm going to have to watch this again and make a concerted effort to not look at Mo so that I can pay attention to what is being said. That's a pretty sneaky technique to boost your view count, Joanne. 😉😏
