Hooper is horrified when he finds Ben Gardener's carcass in his abandoned boat.
From Jaws (1975): When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

@@LukeKetchum7003 Yes....but the fact is they all left in the group hunt. So, it's not clear whether that guy left with other groups after that false hunt or, stayed with Gardner and got eaten away as well. Gardner must have witnessed something, that others didn't. They caught that massive shark maybe because it was another migrant (the autopsy scene by hooper reveals it) into the area but, it was already occupied by Bruce and surely, it was escaping from a cannibal Bruce which led to its capture by the teams. Gardner must have realized this, so he possibly would have stayed back and didn't tell anybody or else, they didn't mention about it to brody because they wanted to win the hunt anyhow.
@rudman97

@@LukeKetchum7003 I can say surely 99% from my knowledge, that it takes minimum 2 when venturing out on a uncertain and adventurous task. Most probably, Gardner wouldn't have dare to single handedly deal with the shark. By having a helper, he tried to achieve the vicious glory. But, he couldn't have minimum imagination what thing he was dealing with. By the time, Gardner would have tried to escape, it was too late. It is certain from Quint's perspective and behavior, that fishermen of amity all took things recklessly and competed with each other for glory. Quint was the master fisherman in the locality, as he had many past experiences with shark attacks. But, they were all reckless in same way or so. If not for brody and hooper, quint's fate could be sealed much earlier by the demon shark as he would surely go into the shark's trap by running after it. Obviously, Gardner fell into the shark's trap.

That's not really right. The tension in the scene is there, but it's misdirection: the audience assumes that Hooper is in danger from the shark, that it's out there somewhere lurking in the darkness of the water. So internally you're wanting Hooper to hurry up, get on with it, get to safety. So when the true scare in the scene comes you're not expecting the form it takes at all.

Decades later, this scene is still bone chilling. The build up of suspense and the suddenness of the appearance of Ben Gardner's horribly severed head, with the look of sheer terror in his one remaining eye, must have induced many a nightmare. I jumped in 1975 when I saw this , and still jump to this day when I watch the movie, what with Spielbergs fantastic directing and John Williams masterpiece of a score , this has to be one of cinema's greatest ever jumpscares , a classic horror movie that still delivers the scares to this day

Let me preface this by saying Jaws is my favorite movie of all time and I’ve literally seen it hundreds of times. But this scene creates the biggest plot hole in the movie, so here’s the explanation ….. So after Brody and Hooper dissect the tiger shark on the dock and realize the Kitner boy isn’t in the shark they go out at dark looking for the shark. They obviously come across Gardner’s boat as Brody says,”Ben Gardeners boat, that’s Ben Gardners it’s all banged up… sure I know him, he’s a fisherman…. What happened?” Hooper: “Look Martin I gotta go down there and check their hull….” Blah blah blah he goes down and of course finds the tooth “the size of a shot glass” before Ben Gardner rolls out of the hull of the boat, causing Hooper to drop the tooth. Cut scene to The next day before the Fourth of July when Brody and Hooper are talking to the mayor on the beach about what they found the night before… most specifically the tooth that he pulls out of the hull of the boat. Absolutely no mention that Ben Gardner‘s ass is completely fucking dead and the mayor has no interest in hearing/seeing the boat that was towed in the night before (perhaps it sank when they towed it in the night before; although I have seen worse shape boats get towed in). His only concern is the tooth that was lost. Everyone on the island knows Ben Gardner because he’s a fisherman. Wouldn’t you think the fact that he’s nowhere to be seen on the island along with his destroyed boat would raise a huge red flag to the mayor?! But no, Chief Brody and Hooper don’t even mention seeing Ben Gardner’s dead body to the mayor… only the tooth The size of a shot glass, that was pulled out of the boats hull. Makes 0 sense. Major Plot hole.

I find it very amusing that this movie has the same MPAA rating as "Shrek."

Originally it received an R rating but Spielberg and the producers successfully appealed for it to be changed to a PG because the violence in the film can’t really be imitated by kids, since it’s a shark doing it. An interesting argument that would never fly with the more squeamish ratings board of today.

Fun fact: Ben Gardner greeted Hooper two times in the movie, and each time got him out of the water pretty quick 😂

Originally, Spielberg wanted the biggest scare to be when Brody was chumming the waters and the shark burst out. He hoped that would get the biggest scream. But when he did this scene, it got a huge scream from audiences, so that later when the shark burst from the water, the audiences were more prepared. Spielberg learned a lesson in scary film-making from this movie.
