You didn't mention a stock or pistol grip. Tbf, that's not going to run you past $80 for a CTR + K2, but still. Also worth mentioning that these prices would mostly be a steal for the given items, so while I respect this build, idk if it realistically comes out below $1250, especially if you factor in shipping. I know this because this is almost the exact build I'm going for right now with a few differences, like choosing a Juliet 4 that I got for a steal ($150!) + 1x microprism over the Strike Eagle for a slightly lower price . Given, it's over a year later, so that's worth considering.

I built my first AR after Part 1 came out! I'm lucky to have family and friends with years of knowledge and guidance including the Part 1 video in this series. However I went with neither James nor Hops build. The meat and potatoes of my build is the excellent complete build kit from PSA that includes an 18" 223 Wylde barrel, rifle length gas system, lightweight 15" MLOK rail, upgraded trigger, complete lower parts kit, Magpull furniture, and A2 birdcage all for $450. That is AMAZING! For $50 I milled the lower myself but PSA offers their lower for the same price. Upgraded charging handle and sling were $50. For optics I scored a Vortex 1-8x LVPO w/ mount on sale (through PSA again) for literally half off at $350. Primary Arms and Vortex have sales all the time. Streamlight makes some excellent low cost weapon lights, though I opted to use one from another rifle of mine. Built rifle comes out to $1000. Spent $250 on cheap mags and ammo. I gotta say PSA may not make the finest products, but damn if they aren't the most valuable. If Hop and James do end up making another budget build video I know for sure one if not both of them will buy PSA. Part 1 was, in a way, how I learned NOT to build my first AR. The compromises James and Hops endured were lessons learnt. The lighter barrel, longer gas system, 223 Wylde chamber, and LVPO resolved all the cons their builds had while still remaining affordable. Thank you TFBTV!

As for the buffer marks, I actually ordered six aero precision rifles at one time, and all of the bolt carrier groups were out of spec and digging into the buffer, causing that issue on all the rifles, so it could be the BCG. Aero did replace them all free of charge.

I mean you can build a really nice rifle for that dollar amount. Trick is to save the money first, have a parts list and kind of watch prices as you're saving so you know what a good price is. Then buy as the sales happen. I built a really nice rifle for that amount, including a quality red dot, but since I did piece meal and ordered as the money came in, I paid a bit more cause of shipping, like $200 total over a few months, when I probably could have lumped a lot of it together if I had the money saved. Also black friday/ Christmas sales are where it's at for building. Also, since it's worth mentioning, I'm not sure how psa's new lines will be cost wise for receivers, but another budget option is leadstar arms receiver set. Can find a set for $100 sometimes on psa and the lock up is tight and the tolerances are good. Not overly tight, but tight enough that nothing feels cheap when installed

My friend has that mentality, has a bunch of rifles that don’t shoot accurately. Cheaps out on ammo, optics, sling, flashlight. You name it, he budget bought it. It’s okay if you budget buy your first rifle, but why ALL of them? will never understand that mentality. Not even like your setups vary that much either since it’s usually budget garbage. 5 PSA rifles, 2 just with iron sights, 3 with shitty optics, no NVG, no IR, no good ammo, bad ammo count, 3 loaded mags, etc etc. Just save. End up realizing you can afford BCM, DD, LMT, MCX, SCAR, Import AKs etc etc. end up with good optics and accessories as well.

Id say it’s about average or slightly above my builds as well. While I think hop clearly won and built a solid gun, I don’t think either was top their for $1250. My main rifle is a aero fsb mid length that I built for around that, maybe slightly cheaper. With holosun dot, a bushnell magnifier (severely underrated), and protac.

The Magpul SL-K stock sling slot is MLOK so there are many QD options out there. It’s not the upper being out of spec but the length of the carrier itself.

@@armadilloeggs231 Why would you assume anything is out of spec? You can see the mount wobble with his shots before he pulls it off while trying to flip it down. The mounting screw either wasn't tightened down well enough or loctited when mounted or both. Mount anything to a gun without tightening it down properly or loctiting the screws and let me know how it goes. Probably about the same.

As the other comments suggested I'd lean towards improper torque/no locktight being the culprit. Then the mount/magnifier out of spec. With the least likely being the psa upper out of spec. Was trying to give James and hop the benefit of the doubt when I brought that up in the initial comment

The buffer chattering is most likely a result of a burr in the buffer retaining pin channel of the bolt carrier group, you can sand the tail of the carrier very lightly with a gentle 1000 grit piece of sandpaper and it will remove the issue

Take note the PSA rifle just worked. They have their quality control issues, but there customer service is exceptional (if you have any issues). Don’t be afraid to buy PSA, use the money you save to buy optics and ammo.

The "market" going the direction of nitride barrels does not mean they are good or better. They are solid for their price, but if you want a barrel that lasts you need that chrome lining. If you grab a CL barrel from a good manufacturer like DD, you will see superb accuracy so it's a non-issue

IIRC I built my first and so far only AR, 5 or 6 years ago, for about the same money ~1500 CAD. It felt premium to me, though that's probably because my experience with ARs to that point had been issued to me as is, so I didn't even bother with a trigger upgrade. Standard milspec trigger group. Aero upper, lower, and BCG. MFT minimalist stock, MI mlok 14" hand guard, and Faxon 16" pencil barrel. Holosun 510c on top. Not the best thing, but I could shoot decently with it out to 300m. People argue about parallax but I've never found that too be a problem. As it stands now with some later additions like magnifier and light, better pistol grip, it's probably sitting at around 2200. The real key to this is not to trap yourself by building the rifle when you need it. I collected the parts over the course of like almost 2 years, fully taking advantage of sales and events.

Most of the "premium" crap out there is the same old shit with a different name on it and people pay it for no reason other than the name. I say this all the time, you take the brand stamping off the receivers, nearly all of these AR snobs wouldn't be able to tell the difference between one and another.

I have a 16-inch, carbine-length gas, heavy barrel. And a vortex 3x prism Red Dot etched reticle. Mostly because my base gun was an m&p. However, I decided that was a good platform for the employment of high-capacity magazines. Making it like a little civilian SAW. Decreased barrel whip is an advantage of a heavy barrel out at distance, though I wouldn't mind a little barrel whip to accompany my high-capacity magazines, the advantage of the heavy barrel is to fire a lot of rounds and overheat less. That's what I tell myself to make myself feel better. It has nothing to do with being poor.

Could be the back if the bolt carrier. I had a “burr” in the back of my bcm carrier that put similar marks on the buffer. Bcm paid for shipping both ways. Inspected the whole lower. Replaces the carrier, bolt, and buffer. No more problems. Awesome customer service.

What red dot sights, what version (17 or 19) what kinda cuts or or barrel threading or not, what kind of aftermarket or brand Glock sights (to go with the red dot) Just to see in the end what's more usable Then again if they went with super compact carry there'd be the whole "caliber" choice (.380 or 9mm, 5.7, or even like 30 super if that's still a thing) adding a light, and then testing to see what ended up being the superior handgun for super compact/micro carry

Well... I was the shit talker mentioned at 3:16... Went and tried to price stuff for recent prices and it is indeed difficult to do. I'd still spend the money for the areo precision m4e1 upper and atlas r or s handguard with mid length gas, which are always backordered... But damn I remember they were 400 bucks. Now they start at 500, and go up to 900! It probably could still be done, but you'd have to find sales or have a parts stash or go with poverty pony or psa parts and lower. I like the slx3x from primary but the eyebox is just as bad as the Juliet, and I would rather just go with 45 irons from Magpul for backup over the holosun. Protac light and Magpul qd sling. I love strike industries, Midwest industries, and a few others for bang for the buck.

The rear slot on the SL-K is and M-LOK slot. You can affix and M-LOK QD socket in it if you'd like.

Soo.. I’ve done some shopping around for my “budget” AR. I’m $600 in w/no glass purchased for this build. Got a sweet “ghost gun” psa lower..delta-team tactical upper w CHF 14.5 socom profile barrel carbine length gas tube on FSP. the barrel was a military order overrun. Faxon firearms complete BCG. Standard mil-spec charge handle. Daniel defense grip w/trigger guard, minimalist stock, drop-in quad rail w UTG grip (I know.. I know). And a 3 port muzzle brake that works like a charm and is very flat shooting 1/7). With m193 I shoot 1 moa all day and though I’m NOT a super gun slingin badass.. this rifle has done amazing for the 1500+ rounds I have thru it. She’s a keeper.. and cheap but well made w good components. It can be done.

I did the same thing in 2004 with a Bushmaster and the quad rail with the eotech, LOL it was my firs AR as well. That was all you could get back then, Colt or Bushmaster.

Not gonna suggest a specific manufacturer, but swap the trigger, add a decent LPVO, run Lancer mags and decent ammo (I love IMI 77gr and Federal varmint 50gr) and adjust as needed. Hell, I mostly run 7.62x39 & 6.5G in AR rifles (DuraMags only).

I built an Aero m4e1 lower with trigger tech drop in , Magpul grip, Magpul rifle stock, 20" aero complete upper, niB BCG, break charging handle, and used Atibal 1-8 lpvo. All for the same price as these guys. It's sad I did better.... I'm an HVAC floridiot not a guntube pro.

Lol. Almost exactly the same here. The difference being Rise drop in trigger and built the 16” Aero upper myself with Vortex 1-6 lvpo. The only thing that would put me over their budget would be my vickers sling. (Trigger and bcg bought during sales)
