The main point of the UBR is the ability to adjust length of pull without moving/removing your cheek-weld anchor point. For precision shooting this is a must. Almost all other adjustable AR stocks create a big hole where your face goes when you extend the length of pull. If you look at the rigs of the top shooters in service rifle competition almost all are using a UBR for that exact reason. Great for RECCE, SDM, or wherever you need high precision from an AR.

@haroldlee4037 Жыл бұрын
If you are setting up a precision AR, you are probably using a magnified optic that will require a height-adjustable cheek piece. The UBR doesn't have one. And, you don't shoot a rifle with a magnified optic NOTCH, so there is no reason for your face to be that close to the receiver. The UBR is a terrible stock for a precision gun for these 2 reasons. I can see that Hop has a strong bias towards carbines and "dynamic shooting." The CTR makes a lot of sense in this role. But, for a precision rifle, the PRS and PRS lite are better stocks. Yes, they are heavy. Yes, they have a long LOP. Neither are detriments to a rifle set up for precision as opposed to dynamic shooting in a plate carrier.
@messinger123
@messinger123 Жыл бұрын
@@haroldlee4037 Height-adjustable cheek pieces don’t work on ARs because of the charging handle. You have to instead use an optic mount that places the optic centerline at the proper height for the shooter. Most of us shooting service rifle competition find that a mount with a 1.3” to 1.4” centerline height is perfect. Most common mounts are 1.5” (too tall). BTW, iron-sight height on the AR is about 1.35” above the rail (varies with elevation adjustment). Common 1.5” mounts are too tall for most for precision shooting. They’re better suited to CQB.
@haroldlee4037
@haroldlee4037 Жыл бұрын
@@messinger123 The PRS and PRS light stocks are LITERALLY built to incorporate adjustable cheek height in an AR platform rifle (as is the RISR from Larue, and the MBR stocks from LuthAR- among others). "Perfect height" is relative to face structure, and those with thin faces and "high cheek bones" may need additional height. And, if you are putting a scope with a 50+ mm objective on a rifle, a low mount won't necessarily clear the hand guard. I'm reminded that my use case is not everyone's use case. But, to say that one is objectively better than the other is either sarcasm, trolling, or grossly myopic. Here is a rifle I’m- very- familiar with, which employs a Magpul PRS stock, and the cheek riser certainly does not interfere with the charging handle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5DIaWWAfdOMsLc

One thing I will say in favor of the UBR. It doesn't grab my facial hair. Pretty much all other adjustable stocks rip out bits of my beard hair whenever I go shooting. Owning a PRS stock for a PTR-91, and loving it, it feels like it was specifically made for more oddball rifles that originally had a stock that wasn't in-line with the bore (G3/HK91 and FAL) or maybe just 308 in general, and they've just pigeon holed it for ar-15's as well so they can sell more units

I was seriously considering a PRS for my PTR-91. Ultimately, I settled on an HK21 stock because I was also able to find a G3/SG1 cheek piece that I plan to have fitted to it. Another plus is that with the rifle buffer fitted, the HK21 stock is barely heavier than the original rifle version.

It's very interesting to see other perspectives. I chose a UBR specifically for my AR-10 DMR since it's a little more heavy for balance, yet maintains a static cheek weld and collapses for transport. As a grunt, I have to say that storage stocks have there place. I carried EVERYTHING on my back and having all the stuff I need to field strip, clean and do very basic maintenance on/in my rifle is reassuring. You are not aways co-located with all your gear, so having a back up set of batteries, bore snake, rag, 2oz mottle of oil, and spare bolt, firing pin, cam pin and retaining pin is very reassuring. Not to mention it is a literal grab-n-go solution. Most of what you could ever need to get your gun back into the fight is actually on/in your gun. There is a reason we had cleaning kits in the butstock of the M16. So having a storage stock, storage pistol grip and storage fore grip just gives you those things. Plus NVGs, Lights and Lasers all burn through batteries like nobodies business. In my battery PACE plan the ones that are in the gun are the "E" Emergency batteries only to be used as a last resort.

They BCM mod0 has been my favorite stock for a while now so if you care to know my reasons: It has a great profile for people with wide square heads like myself and actually allows for a decently heads up shooting position (slightly better than the CTR for me), It's the lightest stock that isn't fragile or rattly, but the primary reason for me, it has anti-rotational qd slots built in which is important to me when shooting in a plate carrier. One of the main things that messed with my shooting while I was active was my sling sliding behind my stock preventing me from getting enough contact with my shoulder to keep it as stable as I could without a sling in the way slowing down my follow up shots. We experimented with tape and paracord to try to get the right blend of range of movement without it sliding behind the buttpad but the BCM does that out of the box with an MS4. The CTR has that issue too although not quite as bad as an M4 stock. At work all our rifles have CTRs which are my second favorite stock but I get around that issue since we use the baseplate mount for our slings (MS3 gen2) anyways and usually in a single point configuration while actually shooting.

I would check out the ACS-L, it offers a better cheekweld than a standard stock, but it’s less bulky than the battery option (like your sopmod/ standard ACS). It’s a nice middle ground imo and allows for easier use with a plate carrier.

I like the B5 Enhanced Sopmod, but it is one of the heavier options out there. I do put extra CR123s in it, and it doesn't rattle. I wish the Enhanced model had an angled buttpad like the Bravo though. The straight one just feels weird unless I'm hunched over the gun.

I have an ACS stock. Yes, that was a mistake. I use the little door compartment to hold glass wipes and that's it. I used to keep CR123's in the tubes until I realized all I was doing was murdering them in heat & cold for no reason. (Pro tip, I stuffed a piece of pluck foam in the bottom to keep the batteries from rattling). Gave up on that, but I haven't been assed enough to spend more money to change the stock. @@BCarnes be advised: the ACS & ACS-L were primarily made for longer than standard m4 buffer tubes, specifically A5 length buffer tubes. The storage and QD point locations were an afterthought. I personally don't have a problem with the QD point and location, it keeps the attachment hard points away from my shoulder. I don't mind it as much as everyone else. As a matter of fact, the ACS-L is my overall #1 favorite stock and for many reasons others overlook, and my use for them is pretty straight forward.

I like the UBR just for the counter balance and the fact that it doesn't make any noise, which is handy for hunting. That said, having used and abused it for years with multiple uppers, it has its issues. I personally hate every AR stock out there. The best thing they could do for the UBR is add threaded holes for a worm screw in the bottom to limit its ridiculously overlong LOP to your own preference(I did this to mine). Next shave three or four ounces off and change from A5 to carbine to shorten it up. Lastly delete the goofy 3/8 inch thick QD end plate. I also agree the storage door is pretty stupid, but it is optional, and some of us gotta store crayons somewhere. Given I don't use the storage door on mine, I'll point out that when I found it the other day, the stock has darkened significantly over time compared to the unused door(FDE).

The SL line is my favorite and go-to for an AR stock. I have the SL-S on my rifle and keep batteries in it, I'd rather have than have not. (Rattle can be solved with a few foam earplugs we probably all have lying around.) And I run the SL-K on my smaller systems and it keeps the whole package compact. The SL-M looks weird on anything but the smallest of systems, especially when SIG keeps slapping them on the back of their full-length Spear systems.

Plus, the surface area on the top gave me a place to put a tiddy sticker which makes my gun 38.4% more lethal.

I totally agree with where you’re coming from, if you do not have magpul furniture from the factory, get the CTR easily… that being said one thing you kinda left out tho is a ton of budget - mid tier ARs are now shipping from the factory with MOE stocks.. if you have an MOE i wouldn’t recommend upgrading unless that factory QD mount is of huge importance to you.. you can fix the rattling issue on the MOE by simply sliding a twist tie in between the gap and retain full functionality. I drilled a QD mount into my MOE also and it works fine and doesn’t take away from the look at all if you do it well.
