I've really loved all of your videos, only downside is that there are so few! My favorite part of your presentations is how you explain the function of these items in a very pragmatic way, while also citing from sources of the time period.

Thank you for the great compliment! I agree, there are too few, but I do have another complete lecture I need to upload.

Gamal Castile where do you do these lectures, and are they open to everyone?
@gamalcastile4 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielm.942 they are at schools and universities. This one was at Washington University in St. Louis. I've been all over Missouri and also to University of Oklahoma. I'll go to any state bordering on Missouri at the moment. (I'd go to any state in the US, but travel costs and time would get prohibitive since I've got to drive a trailer full of equipment)

@@gabrielm.942 depends on the venue whether they are open to the public or not. Some are and are advertised by the school and some are just for a class.

Went to your website, are you in Missouri? Because if you’re I’d love to go to some of these events. Always loved Greek armor and warfare.

I am in Missouri and I think I reaponded to another comment you left. Getting inundated with comments now that one of my other videos has went from like 2000 views to over 72000 views in a matter of days. Unfortunately all schools are cancelled for the remainder of this semester as I'm sure you're aware, so maybe next fall I'll have some. If you're affiliated with any school, feel free to mention me to them!

Gamal Castile yeah I go to Mssu, in Joplin, unfortunately they moved to online classes for the remained of the Semester, but you should definitely come down. I know I’d love to attend.

I would love to know where you bought you Linothorax it's stunning.
@gamalcastile5 жыл бұрын
I had it custom made by a friend. It's also not a linothorax. It's called a spolas. Linothorax is a mistaken term used by some historians taken out of context. It's mostly been totally abandoned. The term linothorax I believe is only referred to once or twice in The Iliad where Homer states some warriors were known for wearing the linothorax. The term means linen corselet. How it ever got to mean layers of linen glued together that would be used 800 years later is anybody's guess. The spolas is likely made from leather, as mine is. It cost about $5000 and took several months to make. It weighs close to 40 lbs. It was all meticulously hand done. The stitching is hand sewn. The paintwork is hand done. The scales are hand done. And the artwork, which you can't see too well from the video is amazingly detailed and hand engraved and repoussed. If you go to my website www.thehoplites.com and look under the heading "The Goat's Pen," you'll see a tutorial on how to make one.

these were highly interesting videos to watch, have you thought about making videos with the intent to upload them to KZbin? giving you the ability to go into more depth and even show examples?
@gamalcastile4 жыл бұрын
I'm just a one-man show at this stage and not very tech savvy. I need an audience to teach to and probably wouldn't be as animated with just me in front of a camera. But I would love to create more content! Thanks for the comment!

Gamal Castile for love of all that is holy please make more videos lol. A few recommendations, don’t worry about worry about video quality or audience engagement, because as you get more comfortable and become more tech savvy you’ll make better quality videos and find ways to engage with your audience. Also recommend making a patreon, this is kind of a niche KZbin market but history based KZbin channels can get quite large. I’d look into similar KZbin channels for ideas on how to present your videos.

@@gabrielm.942 being that I've bumped to almost 80k views in almost a week after having my video sitting here for quite some time, I'm going to be placing another lecture to view and some cutting videos I did when I auditioned for History Channel's "Knife or Death"
