Everyone started somewhere and everyone needs to gain experience. Dont sell yourself short because perhaps you arent that "good" at manual labour, you have been working on the restoration for years now, you are important to the project and people highly respect you for it :D I know i do!

The digging sequence for the rescued tree was very entertaining but next time try using a round point shovel for breaking up the soil. A flat edge just can’t cut it!

I'm having a happy vision of Mary Poppins' Sweeps dancing on the rooftop of Hopwood Hall! My friend Gavin Creel played Bert on the West End 2006-2008. Mary Poppins' Sweeps are Guardians; as Guardian of Hopwood Hall that makes you, Hopwood, a Sweep too! Richard

My dad was a bricklayer, I once asked him "how the hell do you get trees and plants growing out of the sides of buildings, roofs and chimneys??" He gave me a one word answer - "birds". Apparently they are the main culprits as they drop seeds from time to time in lofty places, after picking them up off the floor to eat.
@HopwoodXIV2 жыл бұрын
Good to know! The rebuilt Chimneys will have chimney pots over them so hopefully that will help keep seeds and moisture out
@sallycote2192 жыл бұрын
You were clearly out of your comfort zone while trying your hand at being a brick layer, but I respect you for trying it so you can truly appreciate the skill involved with it. There are no chimneys here in Holland, Mi that come close to the age of the ones at Hopwood Hall. It's interesting to learn that the number of chimneys indicated a person's status.

Before I tuckpointed my entire 150-year-old brick storefront building, I used to call it the Jenga house...lol. I'm really enjoying your content Hopwood - having restored two historic buildings (I gave up on one of them) I can attest that this is a huge, lifetime endeavor and I commend you for your commitment. I can't even imagine what it takes to step up to this challenge. Thanks for sharing your journey.

It's SO cool that you're trying your hand at the different 'trades'. Maybe yet not cut out to be a "brickee", but 1st hand understanding of what goes into those handicrafts is invaluable. Respect! 🤓👍 And, here's hoping the tree survives. 🥂 It'll be an iconic addition to the landscape, with its unique provenance. 😄🤗

Another great video! I’ve been waiting for the next one 👍. Great to see the work on the chimneys, I think you did great, builders make it looks so easy, as they’re so skilled. Great to see you give it a go and you can now say you did some of the chimney 👍. It will be fabulous when you are able to light your first real fire in the hall for the first time in so many years. ❤🇩🇰

I think it is good for you to learn how to correct and do these jobs. It does take time to perfect your skill. Good for you. Yes, concrete is the worst thing to use with brick/stone work. Lime/sand mix it the way to go. I've learned this from following and watching many Chateau restorations. All the best to you.

Hi Hopwood, It's amazing how it's all coming together now, it's great fun to be having a go at doing your own renovation, I know the professionals make it look so easy but I guess it all comes with practice, good for you for having a go. I'm currently reading your lovely book Downton Shabby, which i'm really enjoying but alongside this I am reading The Widdrington Women and their Eminent Men by Cecilia Chance. There is so much information in there involving Hopwood Hall it's fascinating and dramatic in equal measure, I never realised that Edward Hopwood (Susan Fanny's husband) had to go to court to claim his rights to being heir to the estate and take on his brother's and sister, I'm sure you could make a good film out of all the scandal and their lives at the time!! It's great reading something about the hall from the past and then reading some chapters from your book, it's like bouncing in and out of time. If you haven't read the Widdrington Women already, do try I think it will give you another perspective of your lovely home. Thanks for sharing once again. xx

Can't wait to see some of those lovely fireplaces being used and smoke coming out of the chimneys. Are some of the fireplaces going to have a multifuel stove, like the photo of what looks like a Yeoman Devon stove? Saving the tree was sweet. Myself like Woodwarm.
