In the manga they make it more clear that her dad really is working all the time. He sends all the money home and the reason he just lays around the house is because he wants to be around his family as much as he can before he has to go again.

This actually makes it so much better for me, my friend told me that the manga is infinitely better than the show because they cut a lot out of the anime. I'm surprised this is something they cut because it could have been a one-line comment that I think would shift a lot of people's opinions on the character.

Additionally, he was probably around 15 when she was born (her mother was 17 and she's a few years older than him), and they were both kicked out of their families and so have had to work very hard to provide for their kids. This is also why Hori was left alone while she was sick as a child.

hori's dad just works a lot out of town and comes back every now and then from business trips from what i remember. hori's mom also works during the day so that's why she has to take care of her brother after school

Regarding Hori's dad, in Japan, it is not uncommon for father's to not be home every night, depending on their job and location. Just like people commute to the big cities in the US, sometimes the only jobs one can get are in Tokyo. Tokyo is an expensive place to live. As such, some family men will rent a tiny apartment and live near their job during the week, returning home to their family on weekends. They do what they must to support their family. Of course, there are jobs in Japan that will house their employees. For example, a platform manager for the bullet train. Their job hours extend past the last train. Naturally, they're given a room with a bed to sleep in connected to their platform office, traveling home on the first train in the morning.
