Italian Horizons use the upgraded 76mm with guided projectiles as CIWS. The regular 76mm can also be considered CIWS, but there's a considerable performance gap.

So, about the Frigate vs Destroyer nomenclature of the french Navy. Here in France we don't use Destroyer as a ship type. Instead, we call them 1st line Frigate while what the anglo-saxons call themselves a Frigate, here we call them 2nd line Frigate. Honestly, I never understood why. Guess it's the same reason why, during the war, we had Torpilleur and Contre-torpilleurs instead of Destroyer too...
@Noelegamer4 күн бұрын
C’est pour ça les traditions et pour la préservation de la langue française pourquoi appeler un navire destroyer qui est un terme anglophone alors qu’on pourrait dire frégate de premier rang

11:00 my best guess is that the ship was in „assume direct control“ mode. SeaPower has 2 different „laws“ when it comes to ships: - „heading to waypoint“ is the full automation mode. You set a waypoint on the map and the vessel will head towards that waypoint. This mode is also active if a vessel is part of a task force or is launching air elements, the waypoint then being the leading element of f.e. that task force. If a threat presents itself and the ship can see it, its captain will essentially take over control and take defensive measures like turning the vessel to get weapons in arc, turning the vessel to reduce its radar cross section and confuse a missile, switch on sensors etc. - „assume direct control“ is the non automated mode that gets actived either by clicking on „assume direct control“ or by using the A and D keys to control a ships rudder. Instead of sailing to a waypoint, the ship (if no other input is provided) will maintain its speed and heading regardless if a threat presents itself or not. The weapons that are in arc will engage, but the vessel will not change its course to get more in arc. This mode is useful if you want a vessels to stay in a tight formation and having them engage without colliding.

The Suffren was initially armed with a Malafon launcher, able to launch air-guided missiles that carry the L4 anti submarine torpedo up to about 8 miles. The launcher was removed in the 90s I believe. It is also equipped with 4 launchers of L5 heavy antisubmarine torpedoes (and not M46), and 4x20mm guns.

You’re correct in that the Aster missiles are active radar homing. As for the Horizon lacking CIWS, at initial glance one would be correct in assuming that. However, the 76mm guns can act as a form of CIWS, especially when they’re equipped with the DART projectile. These are guided shells that fly at speeds of around Mach 3.5 and can pull 40 g turns
@howardstotler6164 күн бұрын
Interestingly enough, in 79' in the Med I observed the Suffren through the ships' big eye binoculars front the same class as the Suffren's US DDG that her model is based on for this video. Kinda like the Naval version of the twilight zone.

I can confirm that both the Aster 30 and 15 are active radar homing

The 76mm Super Rapid is rated as a CIWS....they tested it against 4 anti ship missiles sea skimming incoming for 12, 3, 6 and 9 O'clock Positions from the gun.....The system engaged and destroyed all four from detection range (Presumably radar Horizon) and nailed them all before any got within 1000m). The Italian Navy upgraded their SR's to Strales which is a guided Anti Missile round to engage missiles at 10km or so The Cassard Class Missile Destroyers were AAW ships built in the 1980s CAP so Suffren really was 2 Generations out from Horizon. Cassards had SM-1 and 6 round Mistral SADRAL launchers

It was probably that at the shorter range battle the launch of the missile could be spotted but at 50 it was still below the horizon.

Sea Powers direct competition is Command: Modern Operations which lacks the 3d game world.... making sea power so much more fun and interesting for viewers to watch
@Davros-vi4qg4 күн бұрын
At moment no real competition, Command allows sim of 100s of units, has much greater ai autonomy, and runs at sensible speeds with a half decent set up…. Mmmm. What SP has is 3d models which I’m luvvin, just hope SP gets some luv from devs, and they don’t get orphaned by their publisher. 😊

The oto-melaras use a circular magazine with a screw feeder. Not sure about that he super rapide but ours held 80 rounds. After they were expended the magazine had to be reloaded by hand from the surrounding ammo stock

Perhaps the initial launch height of the exocets was high enough to be picked up by radar at 20 miles, whereas at 50 miles the missiles were already to low to be picked up until it was too late
