Critical duty is one of the best defense ammo made , in my opinion

The critical duty line of ammunition does decent out of duty size firearms but tends to not expand when fire from shorter barells. I have expirence with them in 9mm, .38spl, and .45. I just pull that red plug out and it seems to work much better. Even out of a 1.8" barell you can get expansion if you pull the red plug out.... Otherwise often times they just don't have enough velocity. Great video.

As long as they are fired in a 5'' barrel they generally perform just as seen in your gel test. They are 1 of the 1st rounds designed from the beginning to perform acceptably in the FBI protocol for penetrating to proper depth after encountering anything from auto glass to sheet metal, wood or drywall while still showing up to 1.5X expansion. It's an old loading but is still a good LE round

Thank you for the video. Another excellent NCP test for the books.

You should measure the ENTIRE bullet track, not just to where the bullet stops. That clear gel can bounce a bullet backwards from 1-4 inches, which can greatly skew the results.

I can't always tell if it did bounce back or not. You get to see the slo-mo on a big screen, all I have is a little phone and I don't always check it, except to make sure it actually recorded it.

Wait until this guy discovers Atomic Defense 45 acp + p ammo. 616ft lbs of energy. That's 10mm power in a .45

So what you’re saying is hornady is part of the group that thinks civilians don’t need the same gear as leos? Lol jfwy but still F hornady The difference is critical defense is made more for short barreled guns. So it’s probably designed to expand under less velocity. So at a higher velocity in theory will expand quicker than it’s designed too. Try it on a shorter barrel? Also i wrote all this after only watching 30 seconds 😂

I am planning on comparing the 9mm Critical Duty and Defense in 3" and 4.5" and seeing if there's any difference

It isn't a matter of needing the same gear... you can go out and buy Critical Duty right now if you wanted to at pretty much any gun store; no one is stopping you. What is happening is that Hornady is segmenting the market based on different needs of each use group and from this perspective, what they are doing is pretty smart. Critical Duty is designed to provide an overmatch in performance but it requires longer barrels in order to make this work. Having long barrels is not a problem for LEOs where open carry duty sized pistols are the order of the day. Critical Defense is designed to give adequate performance in shorter barrels that are more commonly used for concealed carry. It uses a softer alloy than Critical Duty so that it can work well at lower velocities but at the expense that it was only designed to pass the bare gel and clothing tests of the FBI protocol but not the other barrier tests that civilians are not likely to encounter (Critical Duty can shoot through a car door and still reliably expand whereas Critical Defense does not. On the other hand, Critical Duty will basically fail to expand in a 3.5 inch barrel as it needs high speed to work correctly). It's a matter of what it is that you are trying to do and what you see your needs as, and then picking the one that best suits your requirements. The fact that these two options exist and are clearly differentiated for different applications is a good thing and far better than the marketing mess that is Winchester's ammo. For what it's worth, the Critical Duty versus Critical Defense is not nearly this black and white, though. High powered calibers like 10mm and .357 Sig only come in Critical Duty... these rounds have more than enough power behind them that they will work on any barrel length and the Critical Duty is my choice when it comes to .357 Sig. Low power calibers like .380 ACP, .22WMR, and oddball stuff like 9mm Makarov only come in Critical Defense as they don't have enough power to qualify for Critical Duty-level performance no matter how long their barrels are; the fact that LEOs are never going to be issued a .380 as a duty gun but this is very common amongst civilians means that Critical Defense is really the only logical offering for these calibers.
