Another old model brought back to life. Excellent work, Bill. I like that 2MT because (1) it's a Mogul 2-6-0, and (2) it has a close resemblance to US steamers. (Or maybe it's just that the proportions are pleasing to my eyes.) The Claremont & Concord Branch of the Boston & Main RR used small Moguls, and even though I'm a Midwesterner, I've always found that line very quaint and interesting. Cheers from Wisconsin!

If the colours of the diesel-hauled freight train on the other track from the 2MT look familiar, it's because Wisconsin Central bought a big chunk of the British freight operations when they were privatized in the mid-1990s.

@@beeble2003 Yes, I was aware of that interesting fact. When I first moved here in 1995 the Wisconsin Central was all the RR action here in my area. And I liked their loco color scheme, too.

Those Hornby 2MTs are sweet little engines. I've had one for about 35 to 40 years now and used to run it around my layout all the time. I can't remember where I got it from, but it had no wheels on the pony truck so I just pressed some old wagon wheels into service, and it just rolled around right as rain. Earlier this year I decided to service the engine as I hadn't used it for a while and boy did I get a shock. The cylinder block fell apart because of very old glue that had perished and that screw plate at the back fell apart for the same reason. Some super glue in both places gave it an ad hoc repair, bur I can foresee a new body shell and cylinder block as a future purchase.

Great job again Bill. That looked quite scary to start with! The Ivatt 2MT is quite a characterful thing. Whilst slightly older engines especially GWR are my favourites I've travelled quite a few miles behind BR made versions if this loco in recent years on heritage lines and they invariably seem to do a good job.

What a lovely transformation. And she seemed to sound smoother the longer you ran her. 🙂 I wonder if the Hornby Ivatt Class/2MTs would be suitable for Bells & Whistles' 5 pole motor upgrade pack? I couldn't afford to order a new Hornby 2MT, so I bought a second had Bachmann one and she looks and runs lovely.

Piers, the upgrade is designed to use the mounting hole of the original motor, so it should work with 'any' XO4-powered locomotive. Interesting idea, but you need deep pockets!

When did you get an ultrasonic cleaner, Bill? I'm quite a few repair videos behind (sorry! I am up-to-date with the layout build) so I haven't seen you use it before. What liquid do you use - just water, IPA, or something else? Is it as good at degreasing parts as the Contact Cleaner?

I wonder if these old locos wobbly because the center axle doesn't touch the rail or have a flange. The distance between the function axles is quite large and so it would possibly explain it moving from side to side, but because the center wheel also doesn't necessarily touch the track it also means there is not another axle to stabilize it in the vertical axis too. Just a thought.

I think that may well be part of the reason yes. That coupled with wear and inferior machining compared to today's models. Sometimes enlarging the holes in the rods helps.

I cant work out what is wrong with mine, it wobbles more than a 3 legged dog, however when i turn it over and run it i cant see anything wrong, no wheels wobbling and everything else looks straight and fine, oh well it is 50 years old, i wonder if my modern locos will last 50 years, oh just a little fyi in 1974 the ivatt 2mt from hornby had a rrp of £9 a little different than today’s prices lol

Horns and Whistles Workshop do a wee motor that replaces an X04. Could be used to replace a X03 as well if you can source a worm gear. With a suitable mount you can also fit a Type 7 motor as I did with my own one.

Hi Bill. Nice video. You made reference to the "obligatory crack" but mentioned it no more. Would a drop of Superglue not help (very carefully placed, of course)?

It would just crack again. As long as the screw isn't over tightened it's fine.
