42, that's just so perfect, the answer to life, the universe and apparently how much the Ruston can pull 😂👍

Join Sam on Sunday April 12th with a brand new Locomotive Challenge featuring the Hornby Ruston Shunter. How many wagons do you think the Ruston can manage?

Hornby well my can hardly pull two BR Mk1s

Hornby I think that it should be able to hall around 25 wagons or even 1 or 2 more.

The best things come in small packages and what a little gem this is. I reckoned at 24 to 30, but not 42. It pulled the last wagons with easy when it took up the coupling slack then the wee loco started to feel the strain on its train. With one less at 41 wagons (the last should have been a brake van - LOL), it would have crossed the stop line okay. Defected in the end by just its own loco length, but I'd call it a pass too. A good little test to do Sam, and it would be interesting to see what some of the other locos can achieve (a new top 10 list needs to be made in the Sam Trains Log Book.

Hi Sam Thanks for bringing this "Fantastic" hobby to the masses & sharing ur knowledge with the likes of me. Its made me want to rekindle my luv of Hornby trains. To that end i went on Gumm tree (Aust) & found a Hornby Flying Scotsman boxed set bought, claimed, back in the 80's & never run Im over the moon

I love those little Rustons and the Pug is well up on my faves list. I’ve promised myself, when I have a bit more space I’m going to do a little dockside layout featuring both. As a lad I had the joys of having a 3’ gauge Ruston to ride around on ver 22mile or so of track on Thorne peat moors. Happy days. Who needed a Hornby train set!

This is a good example of static versus dynamic loads, the engine does not full all 42 wagons at once, rather is pulls the first one, then once the coupling is taught it pulls the second and so on imparting kinetic energy to the train of wagons.

That is a shiney new intro! That little engine though, so cute! Yet that gearing for it to pull over 40 wagons. That is impressive. Even with some track grade, I would think this loco if you really wanted too pull it away from yard shunting duties, could go incline at 2% with 30 cars and maybe not manage wheel slip just from seeing how well its been performing in this video.
@bindonrail464 жыл бұрын
Great to watch this video again. I know we all have problems with space (and straight lining) when we try these things, so why not get some flat wagons (Hatton's Warwells?) and load them up with weights and solve the problem? Just an idea for the future. Have a good new year and I'm looking forward to this years content. :-)

Hey sam incredible test and i've tried 50 wagons on my flat layout made a full lap but it did slip a bit on the corners and as i found out at my local model club 5-7 is the limit for inclines

that`s brilliant...a real tiny little loco,pulling that amount..would be interesting to see it pull continually around a large flat loop with large radius curves..but of course a lot of space needed...wonder what the max would be for it to continually haul,without risking damage to the motor ...cheers..ade

So, two units could haul many wagons on your floor layout. Perhaps 30 wagons with no problem? You could Neuton test 30 wagons on some curves and then have the two Rustons pull them. Awesome little loco', Sam. John Canada

Hornby, if you pay lots of attention to Sam’s train’s reviews then I genuinely think that you would improve a lot more as a brand because you have lots of good models that Sam has reviewed and you can improve on them greatly, he also talks about your prices and he also shows the very cheap and nasty locos that you guys produce and says just how they need to be improved seriously guys you could do so much better
