Carpe Sus - Hog Hunting & More

Күн бұрын

Three nights of hunting this week yield one pregnant sow, 1 pregnant coyote, and 2 other coyotes.
I am shooting a @LoneStarArmory TX15 MPCE loaded with factory @druidhillarmory loaded Maker T-Rex 95 gr. ammo for the 6.5 Grendel.
My rifle scope is a ‪@RIX_Optics‬ Leap L6.
Brass Catcher by Tactical Brass Recovery and my ammunition was provided by @tacticalbrass
I have some new kit in this video including my new InfiRay Finder FH35R V2 thermal monocular with laser range finder. There will be more on this in future videos. For those that are interesting, I purchased it from @techsavvyoptics techsavvyoptics...
I am also sporting a new multi-purpose headland from www.armytek.com. Check out their lights and if you find something you like use discount code "carpesus" for a 15% discount. I do NOT receive any $$ from ARMYTEK. They just send me gear to test.

Those 95gr T-Rex are getting the job done. Mostly coyotes this time but in the last video and this, it takes care of hogs no problem. Hope to see more analysus on these.

The last 2 coyotes had nice, Quarter-sized exit holes (~7/8"). They do alright in my book.

"Mono-morphic" I learned something new today! 😁 Nice work!
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 7 ай бұрын
I have relearned monomorphic several times over my life. Beavers are more or less true monomorphs in that externally, you cannot tell a male from a female, even with close examination. The coyotes can be monomorphic visually as their fir often hides sexually diagnostic traits, though they are not actual monomorphs. Honestly, I just like the way the word sounds. I find it fun to say, LOL.

Clearly, Brian has a classical education. He uses Latin and Greek root words with a little bit of German and Napoleonic area French mixed in. Not a "wordsmith" like a lawyer you understand , but classical biology verbiage.

Maybe ? Iso-morphic? Mono meaning "one" , iso meaning "the same " or "equal".
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 7 ай бұрын
@patclark2186 The term is from biology - (of an animal species) having sexes that are similar in size and appearance.

Another great video. Do the cows ever spoke when you shoot?
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 7 ай бұрын
Really good question! Short answer, sometimes. Long answer...Each herd sort of has its own personality. I have had cows spook before I ever entered the field. I have had cows spook because I walked to close to them. I have had cows follow me around. I have had bulls challenge me both before shooting in one case and after shooting while getting photos. Other cows could not care any less that I am there and sometimes they don't care if I am shooting as long as I am not standing among them. Shooting when surrounded by cattle in close proximity can get you run over. I have done this and the cattle spooked and fortunately did not run me over, but only because I got lucky. It was close. Usually, cattle out in the field will flinch and maybe change what they are doing with the first shot. If there is a lot of shooting (and this is suppressed shooting), they will sometimes just meander away from the noisy guy in the field.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve walked through free range beef cattle hunting elk out west. They could careless about me, but I wasn’t shooting. Lol

What’s your thoughts on iray finder ?
@CarpeSus

I bought mine outright. Tim at Tech Savvy Optics treated me right (as I expect he does for everybody), but I bought the unit with the idea of making it a rooftop scanner on a pan tilt motor. I am still working on that aspect. So I want to be clear that my thoughts on this don't reflect negatively on TSO. I think that optically the unit is very good. The firmware is solid and stable (no freezing or glitchiness). I had one time that the LRF did not work and I suspect after the fact that the lens cap was in the way, but I rebooted and did a couple other things and it worked again. Whether I moved the lens cap out of the way or not, I don't recall, but that is the only firmware glitch I have experienced and it was just once. I can't say enough good things about InfiRay releasing a unit with solid functioning firmware. For the money, I think it is a decent value. I think this is a nice spot and stalk optic, but not an optic I want to spend hours behind. Ergonomically, I find that the Fnder is challenging in many ways. I am going to pick nits here because I own this unit. The lens cap will rotate as you focus the objective lens. You can then rotate it back once your focus is good without moving the focus ring, but I am frequently adjusting the lens cap if I need to focus. My read on the unit is that it is designed to be used by a right handed person placing the optic to the right eye. Why? Because the sensor that will cut off the display screen when the unit isn't against the eye is on the left side. If you use the unit upright and against the left eye, the sensor can't tell you have it against your eye and so the screen does not come on. If held to the right eye, the housing for the sensor tends to hit the bridge of my nose. While I don't have a small nose, it isn't abnormally large. I can't place the eye cup flush against your eye and be looking directly forward because the housing hits the nose. I can have my eye flush in the eye cup with the unit pointed 45 degrees off to the right and not hit my nose, which is certainly usable, but ridiculous. So I am not getting good points of contact looking through the unit and so the image appears less stable (shaky). I will try to get a full review out in the near future. There are more things I like about the unit and more that I don't.
