I have no idea why they couldn't use established characters as both "Heroes" and "Villagers". Having Hippolyta & Jason as hopeless civilians to be rescued by a generic Hoplite is really weird.

We loved the first horrified in our house and played it dozens of times with various iterations of monsters, often with three or four monsters in play. We were excited by the second, but noticed an immediate downgrade in quality of components and less interesting game design, possibly due to the change in game designers. I also personally found the game board very busy. After playing against every monster in groups of two or three, we sold it and moved on. The third one I liked more than the second, but it still feels less than the original. Like you pointed out, there are a couple of rules issues. The monster mats also still seem to be of lower quality. We have played every monster but have not had the urge to play it any more. It’s too bad, as the theme is there but it’s just not as fun as the original.

I still like Horrified (the first one), but I almost feel like it was replaced by Unmatched: Tales to Amaze, at least thematically. I’ll still keep Horrified, but probably on my “to play with family” shelf.

As someone who isn't American I would put the Cryptids on the bottom, personally. Ironically that's the one I own since it was the one in store at the time. But I have no connection to most of those cryptid creatures

Oh no. I was hoping they learned from the poor rules in the last one and made more effort this time around. I really like the Horrified system so I have all 3 but I haven't gotten around to playing the Greek one yet because I got so frustrated with the American Monsters rules that I put it away for a year and have just gotten back to it. For whatever reason the second time I gave American Monsters a try the rules didn't seem as bad or confusing as I first thought, so I've playing that one a bit. But it's disappointing to hear that the rules for Greek Monsters are even worse. As for the themes, I love the classic Universal Monsters films so that one is number 1 for me. I'm Canadian so I'm not that familiar with the Cryptids and I thought the Greek Monsters theme would be a bit more interesting. I still hope they continue to make more though.
@IronSalamander88 ай бұрын
I enjoy the classic universal monster version, but the 2nd one was very uninteresting and while I like the Greek theme, this doesn't really work, and the low quality components doesn't help.

Hearing the rules issues is disappointing. I've never played Horrified but this theme was really interesting to me.

I do think people seemed to be overthinking some of the monster rules on BGG, it almost seemed to come more from some aspects seeming a little too easy like the Minotaur's Labyrinth puzzle. altogether I think this one is the most random and therefore swingy though so I dont mind some elements being easier.

The overview gives unnecessary detail at times, and leaves out important things at others. For example, on the chimera you just said put the heads to sleep. When they're asleep you're done. Put them to sleep how? What are the two steps? You might as well just have not mentioned it if you're not going to say a word about the mechanics.
@robkanngiesser54638 ай бұрын
It’s just an overview, not a rules teach.

The first Horrified is a modern classic. American Monsters was a solid sequel with a few new things that I found interesting, but it didn't quite have the same feel as the first one. Either something was missing or maybe there was too much. I can't quite put my finger on it because, like I said, it's still a good game and I will replay it. I've now played Greek Monsters a couple times and I don't know if I'll ever play it again. It feels way off for me for some reason. It kinda feels like a cheap knock-off of the original game. Almost as if they didn't really playtest it enough to see if the new theme and scenario specific mechanisms are actually fun.
