The martians, as described by Wells, were the size of bears. They were large soft octopus-like creatures, with a bag like head with a v-shaped mouth and large, round, saucer-like eyes. On both sides of the mouth were bundles of long, flexible tentacles, ten on each side, and in the place of ears, they had round, faint indentations in their soft heads. They had no teeth, the mouths only useful for speaking and breathing. They were vampiric, using sharp straw-like tools to puncture arteries and transfer living blood directly to their own veins - they did not 'eat' as such, lacking all digestive organs of any sort. On mars, they bred humanoid animals which they fed rich foods to, and 'milked' them for blood which they put directly into their own veins, thus gaining the already digested nutrients. In mars low gravity, the martians could easily stand tall on their tentacles and walk freely like spiders, on earth the crushing gravity forced them to crawl, pulling themselves along with their whip-like appendages. They often ran out of stamina, and had to heavily breath after such effort. I wish the Beeb had done the martians accurately; they would have been far more interesting and terrifying. Wells was better, and they should have trusted him.

Through jesters and body language. 3, The lack of dialogue could build the tension more. making all the other audio pop more. Lacklustre and unengaging, the magic of the books is completely missing. @cosmicorangutan5 жыл бұрын
I don't think they came from another galaxy... They crossed _INTERPLANETARY_ space and *possibly* interstellar space but not intergalactic space... That's a *HUGE* stretch. Also, they probably didn't bring any of their own food because the whole point was to come here and eat us, humans. We were their food. It's just, as it goes, humans are not very good to eat, we can be full of diseases. Diseases they may never have encountered on mars. It's also possible that they have no immune system or an immune system that is so vastly different from ours that they are incapable of fighting off the disease. You can't say for certain and that's something that I think makes these alien invasion movies/tv-shows so good. The fact that you don't quite know why they are invading or what their master plan is, it's left to your imagination, and that often leads to negative thoughts.
@avinashjagdeo5 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicorangutan Lol. You had to be the smart guy to bring that up. Yeah you're right. According to H.G. Wells they were Martians. Cinematic versions depict a much more advanced being than was originally envisioned, soo...yea, could be from anywhere. My point was, as with most hollywood depictions (or british in this case) of advanced beings that have traversed space and all the challenges of physics and dangers it poses, somehow seem upon getting here to be stumped by a few inches of matter, namely doors and windows. In the original book, the aliens arrived here in rudimentary rocket like ships and didn't seem to be any sort of highly evolved terrestrial creature. cinema and tv tend to depict creatures far more advanced and with technology way beyond ours, physically superior predators yet somewhat dim-witted. They seem to give the aliens the same limitations of humans in order to give people a fighting chance. I think this inconsistency is the attempt by cinema to present the aliens as a genuine threat and terror yet give humans a fighting chance in order to carry a story. Provide a scare and thrill born from the possibility of hope and survival for the show to be marketable. This is not a problem for most people watching who will still enjoy this duality and contradiction. Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking the genre, I've been a War of the Worlds nerd since I was a kid but I tend not to enjoy modern depictions of these stories because far less thought goes into them. It's generally for thrills, which is fine for many people. I have no problem with that. But there is no doubt in my mind, that something as advanced as with is depicted in these shows will wipe people out very quickly and effortlessly. If you want the story to carry with people surviving, you need a simpler being not as technologically advanced.
@steplusplus5 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicorangutan If you want to get technical... The biggest problem I had with the BBC's interpretation of this classic was the Martians. When you saw one nudging a fallen ally with its head, it became apparent that they lack arms/hands/fingers, or some equivalent. Without the ability to grip tools, a creature wouldn't be able to create fire, never mind huge weapons of war. The only excuse I can think of is that these are special Martians that have been genetically engineered for fighting. The problem with that is that, if resources are scarce back on Mars, these guys get to eat while the real Martian starve! It just seemed like poorly conceived design. Otherwise I enjoyed the miniseries and it was nice to see it set in a time and place that was more accurate to the original story. I know some people have complained about other changes from the original story but in a retelling, I think some artistic licence should be allowed... as long as it makes sense.

I am glad that has finished whatever it was - didn't make much sense to me - I remember there was a good book by H G Wells of the same name but that was well written with an impressive story. Maybe some day they will make it into a film.

In my opinion, this wasn’t entirely bad. But it doesn’t surpass the Steven Spielberg version. What I like about that movie is the Tripods and it’s take on the aliens, according to Spielberg, the aliens in that movie aren’t from Mars, but from a different planet, which property why I find it interesting, because it gives us different perspective to the aliens’ origins and not something that’s expected. In this though, despite the machines, the Martians seemed a bit primitive and seemed to rely on instinct instead of intelligence. I personally don’t mind them and I personally liked their design, but I don’t think lived up to their potential. I personally like this version of War of the World, but I personally find the Spielberg version more preferable.

@@Kainlarsen Spielberg’s version is fantastic. Yes it has its flaws, but the tone and atmosphere of the film is incredible, and special effects (especially the sound effects) are some of the best to ever come out of Hollywood.

I'm sorry who wrote this script? "dont move" what's next "it's behind me isn't it?" Alien design is is completely uninspired to.. such a shame. The Beeb can make years of amazing and new Doctor who but can't do War of the worlds which is already written lol

Still a little puzzled at how an Alien with only 3 pointy stubs and a straw can make complex mechanical tripods and space ships. A bit like the Darleks, thwarted by a pesky door it couldn't open. A little disappointed with this show as I had high hopes for it.....still supremely better than EastEnders or Strictly though.
